The issue of Evangelicals/Protestants being more afraid to question may stem from a fear of being blasphemous, with the whole "How dare we question GOD?!"--a complete misunderstanding of the "sovereignty of God" doctrine. What we often miss is, God WELCOMES our questions! "Come now, and let us REASON TOGETHER." We are SUPPOSED to ask God questions, not act like He somehow can't answer.

💯 facts. If you think about it, Moses questioned God and so did the disciples.

I agree with your comments, being taught not to doubt, so we don’t think we can question.

Isn't that curious though, that the only reason of the schism was asking questions and challenging authority?

I grew up Catholic and had many questions and was told not to ask, just believe. I now go to a church where questions are welcomed.

Questioning builds a strong faith; each question is a stone that becomes part of one's faith foundation. I grew up Jewish and had many questions about God and reality. My inquisitiveness led me to practice several other religions. I came to Christianity through apologetics as I had many questions to get answered, especially to find out if Jesus was the prophesized Messiah/Christ. I asked in good faith and through several apologists, including some Christian Jews, I became convinced that only Jesus could have been the Messiah - and is the Messiah and our High Priest, the Risen Lord.

I love The Chosen & even donated a good sum. I was not upset at all that a cameraman had a pride flag. Then, directly after the incident, the actor that plays Judas chimed in to attack concerned Christians, but hey, how cares, he's just Judas after all. What totally broke my heart was when the actor who plays John, also spoke out against the Christians who were concerned. I understand being loyal to your friends, even close relationships with coworkers. But John made such an abrupt caviar statement, directed towards the loyal Chosen fan base, in which he seems to say in summary, "I or we do not care about your personal opinions about LGBTQ issues & if you feel offended, then you don't matter & don't have to watch The Chosen." I personally will never judge a person about how they identify & their extremely personal preference in private life. That is between them & our Savior. It was just a gut punch to all of us loyal fans who gave their hard earned money to support the most important message in life. It made The Chosen that much special, knowing that Johnathan is such a loyal follower of our Savior. Most of us just cringed when the actor playing, John, "The disciple who Brought The Good News to the world, didn't show any respect or courtesy to all the KIND, GIVING & SUPPORTIVE CHRISTIANS who gave their time & money, from their hearts to start this wonderful series to deliver this important & wonderful message to every heart under heaven!!

Did you realise he later reacted to his own comment? Best we make sure we know the full story before coming to conclusions too quickly. But, like one of the other commenters wrote: this issue is not connected to this particular roundtable discussion about Season 3, let alone Brandon's comments on it

The fact that God WANTS to hear our questions is part of what draws me to Him!! My faith blossomed through books like "Evidence that Demands a Verdict" and "Mere Christianity" because I had questions. I love the information given by people like Francis Schaeffer and the Colson Center who are willing to discuss hard topics and deal with questions.

John the Baptist knew God intimately! He was not confused about his calling His questions were not for his sake but for his disciples to see Jesus as the messiah! The Chosen takes a lot of “artistic license” with the Word, including John! He was a serious man of God and didn’t have time for foolishness! He def understood what it meant to come against Herod.

The Jewish scholar is right. John knew the answer. This is a situation similar to a Dad or mom telling the kids, go ask your other parent. Fully aware what the other parent is already going to say. But the kids need to hear another person say it, so that it sticks.

Dark Night of the Soul ... I recall that F. Scott Fitzgerald was one who used this or a similar term. As for JtB, he was being honest, impatient and o-so human. God rewards such honesty. Honesty is critical in faith and prayer. It also shows the truth of the Gospels in that a true believer, a great prophet, was capable of being honest, impatient, human, and still learning. The scriptures do not hide the imperfections of the great early church. But they grew in their faith. They died for Jesus.

John the Baptist is also an imperfect human being. Jesus is the only perfect human that ever lived. Adam and Eve were created perfect, but chose to sin.

When Jesus answers John's disciples, he tells them to report what they have seen according to Isaiah's prophecy about the Messiah. But He stops short of saying that He sets the prisoners free. This would tell John that he would remain in prison, but yet confirm that Jesus is the One they have been waiting for.

Great at last this point has been discussed I too have reflected on it for years and I love all the points Dallas and the others make and agree that John would only have questioned just to be doubly sure that it was Jesus! I mean he had great faith but being in prison for so long and thinking and re thinking is this really the Messiah who’s come in peace the suffering Messiah or is there another who will come to conquer and rule the earth the lamb first and then the lion what John maybe didn’t realise was Jesus was the only one and healing the blind the lame etc are all signs of conquering! Sorry Brandon if I’ve babbled on a bit but this is one of my pet issues x

John’s fundamental error was that his expectations about Jesus and His mission were wrong. Just like everyone else. So Jesus tacks on this gentle rebuke in his response. Blessed is he who does not take offense at Me. Luke 7:23 That is, blessed are those who do not reject Jesus because He is not what they expected and He did not do what they expected. Prison at that time was no picnic, John suffered terrible duress. Alone with his thoughts he may have thought he had led others astray. Whatever angle you choose there’s a lesson.

Certainly there's no definitive explanation of these passages. For me, it's an opportunity for Jesus to point out that we all have moments of weakness and doubt. Even someone in the know like the baptizer. When it came time to pick his disciples, Jesus didn't seek out the strongest, most steadfast, and perfect people. He picked men like St Peter, whose courage didn't always match his faith. He also chose Judas, I believe as a warning to us that even our most senior and exalted religious leaders can be deeply flawed. The point is, these are reminders that we all will stumble at times. When we do, we shouldn't despair, but reach for God's hand, like Peter did when he was sinking, and not give in to our fears, like Judas did. After all, Our failures don't make us less Christian, but more human.

I totally believe that John knew Jesus was the Messiah. He may not have known that Christ would come twice, but I doubt that as well. John most likely was an Essene and in the scrolls they preserved at Qumran they stated a couple hundred years earlier that Messiah would come twice and they gave specific and accurate dates. John had a different meaning that seems to have gotten lost over 2000 years, but I think he really knew the plan, maybe even better than Jesus since Jesus was not an Essene. See Ken Johnson's books, or Josh Peck's Lost Prophesies of Qumran.

Some believed not that the Messiah would come twice but that there would be 2 Messiahs, one who would be the suffering servant in Isaiah 53 and another who would be warrior king in Zechariah.

I feel like the true and entire mission of Jesus was not completely revealed to John. He made a decision to confront Harrod based on his belief Jesus would free him from jail and punish Herrod. It was a fatal mistake but probably God's will.

That could be. Jesus's rebuke was a reminder to John, not to disbelieve because his expectations have not been met.
