Question…for the multi tracks you can use the same mixer to send it? Why the reason to use a separate interface?..the rack looks amazing pretty sure you cover any place you play!
@TheSteveKinney
@TheSteveKinney 4 ай бұрын
I chose to use a separate interface as a redundancy. I could have easily used the USB functionality of the mixer itself for sure. But I also plan on recording every show, and I just didn’t want it doing too much. We have a tracks computer that triggers everything from ableton. And then we have the computer that controls the mixer & records into presonus capture.

Could you do a video on how to do a good monitor mix? With effects and EQ, compressor etc. I own the same Presonus 32R, but I haven´t been able to start really mixing the monitor mix other than panning and volume.
@TheSteveKinney
@TheSteveKinney Жыл бұрын
hmmm... that's a tricky one because it's so subjective.. I could probably do a general breakdown on routing etc. there IS a special technique for monitoring vocals for each singer that is not commonly known.. has to do with what essentially amounts to phase cancelation from your small inner ear bones vibrating while singing. I've got a lot of random videos to follow up with... TON of work haha. If you'd wanna fast track something like this, I'd be happy to do a 1:1 session an answer specific questions, and even screen share the mixer software to show you what I've done etc.

If you’re going with seismic audio for the snake split, the only thing I wish I did differently was to get a snake splitter that could handle phantom power. Talk to them directly and they can get you the best one.

@@AnthonyWatsonMWArts there is ways around it. The reason I have the one I do is because i got it on a great deal from a buddy who used it in his rig. You can get the triton audio inline phantom power plugins. You put it between the mic and the mic cable. And then bam. It’s safe. Or you can get a specific one from seismic that is made for this sort of thing.

Those seismic splitters are hardwired transformerless inputs wich means if you are using phatom power that voltage goes directly to the other mixer. Are you using condenser mics? And have you had a problem with voltage leaking to the other console? I know this can fry the input of a mixer

@@mattjohnson7660 works like a charm, I’ve done a bunch of random shit with it. I’ve used it for pre production tracking, live stream events, rehearsals and a few gigs. I really enjoy this device. My biggest and almost only drawback is that the network audio portion doesn’t interface with anything but AVB. I SOOOO wish that it Dante or an option card. Outside of that- no software issues. I still can’t figure out why people say the software is rough. Not once have I run into issues. Must just be an early edition kind of issue that still lingers from reviews and stuff. I talk to a lot of buddies who do way more touring than i do and generally speaking the whole network audio thing isn’t even an issue because almost 99% of the time, if you’re down your own shows and tours - you’re bringing your own front of house. And most of the time, you’d have an IEM rig and a FOH rig. If you’re doing gigs and stuff, similar thing - you’d either be handing off tails or you’d be handing off a left right and an iPad. But that said, generally as a device there is nothing that really compares to the I/o of what this can do; the modeling, the price, and the ease of use. Happy to answer any other questions.

@@TheSteveKinney love it! Thanks man. I have an x32r for our IEMs now but when that goes (probably never?) I’m honestly thinking of the presonus. I have the 16r I’ve been thinking of selling cuz I’m not doing quite as much fly dates as I was thinking but the several times I’ve used it it’s been great! Feedback like yours keeps me holding on to it haha I guess it just really gets overshadowed and shot down cuz MOST small - mid level bands are running x32r’s in their rigs. I’d LOVE to have another 1U of space and weight back with the 24r vs the x32 in all honesty haha…I also never minded the software either, but some people HATE it. We’re really only running ears and handing off tails like you mentioned (we run a few s8 splits in a 6U with the x32) … or smaller shows we’d run FOH but that’s not mission critical stuff … small to medium sized bars and venues etc. Awesome to hear it’s holding up! That’s been my only question is the longevity! 🤙

@@mattjohnson7660 the rack case is really to thank here for that… it’s a damn tank. And it’s largely weather sealed… I wouldn’t dip it in water, but loading in inclement weather is no problem. Nor is spider infestations.. ask me how I know haha 😆 Well well worth it. It’s massive with the covers on, but really comfortable and tidy when they are off. I genuinely get the vibe that a ton of new stuff is about to come out. New behringer stuff, new presonus stuff. Everything has really changed for people’s needs, and tech too. I’d expect high channel counts and tons of digital connectivity. 24r is pretty damn legit for fitting into 1u X32 is tough to beat simply because of the network effect. Like… everyone has one in most venues because venues don’t wanna spend money 😂 But at the same time the boards are great. My absolute biggest problem with the x32 is how it handles its 16 line outs, where 2 of them are your main left and right out. And how the headphones follow the main out. The presonus 32r has 16 dedicated outs, and the headphones can be assigned to anything, and the main outs are separate.. so it’s more like 32 in 18 out.

For my band we usually play at festivals and this would benefit for sure but, would it be to stressful to ask engineers there at those festivals to redo their stuff when they have other bands going on and off? That is the only thing I'm questioning because of course they would have to unplug the things they had.

The best way to go about it would be to be as self contained as possible. For example: we run our own stage boxes and looms, We run our own vocal mics and we have a 24ch xlr snake with every channel clearly labelled on their end of the snake

@TheSteveKinney
@TheSteveKinney 5 ай бұрын
Allen and heath is great stuff. I don’t think they are comparable though. This is a 32 channel rack mixer with 32 preamps, with 20 physical outputs. The Allen and heath has 16 pres and looks like about 10outputs, depending on how the routing in the system works. Now. Sure, for that size, the pres and everything is gonna work great, so if that size channel count will work, then it’s gonna do a great job. However, the channel count is extremely limiting if you’re trying to do playback tracks, live instruments etc with different stereo IEM mixes for everyone in the band. Not saying it wouldn’t work, or that it’s bad. Just that it’s a smaller package. If I had the option, I’d be rocking this one.

Awesome rig! Love nerding out on these setups - so many variations. One thing I notice and question: why are so many people running a digital mixer AND an audio interface, when the mixer should work as both (I’m assuming your mixer has the same basics abilities as a Behringer x32r)? I know you already owned yours, but it’s seemingly extraneous… For example: my X32r runs 18-20 stage inputs from my split, and another 6-8 channels of click/cues/tracks via usb straight from Ableton into the X32 (so it feeds internally, no extra patch cables needed) and on to iems and externally to FOH - so it doesn’t use up any extra hardware inputs on the X32 for tracks, and those sources never touch the splitter (plus it can record 32 channels of raw audio multitracked to SD card - which is not super relevant, but still with no extra interface - which I think just goes to show that the horsepower, capabilities, and flexibility these devices have is not well known Anyway, for the sake of weight, space, maximizing the number of available inputs, and quite a few fewer cables I’d say definitely look into the Presonus’s abilities! I’d be very surprised if it wasn’t capable of all of that (aside from the SD card multitracking, which requires an expansion card on the behringer)! 🤘🏻 PS: Still liking that shock case? Been thinking of switching to something similar - wondered how it hold up! Anyway, Thanks again for sharing
@TheSteveKinney
@TheSteveKinney Жыл бұрын
Thanks mate! As a matter of fact - the interface is kind of on the redundant side cause you’re right - this mixer can get direct feeds from a session. But truthfully, I like the idea of redundancy. Sometimes software is stupid. So I have two laptops if I need it. One to control the presonus and / or record the show. Don’t want it doing anything else. And then the other sends audio via interface. Additionally, the one that’s recording is mainly a convenience and not always used. Side note - the road case is awesome. Holding up nicely. If I could tell the manufacturer- I’d say, make the handle out of something else, it’s strong but makes me nervous for years of use. But at the same time. It’s only ever used for seconds at a time. Haha 😆 I just know how this stuff gets abused.
@brett-westgrove-country-music
@brett-westgrove-country-music Жыл бұрын
@@TheSteveKinney nice, that’s very fair! I have redundancy in the form of two computers, but they both do the same things (one is just a backup in case the other fails) - different approach. Also, tbf, I did have to upgrade to a more powerful MBP this year but that’s mainly because the one computer also does ProPresenter video and lighting. It’s a lot but the M1 Pro is a beast! I have a generation older SKB 8U (power conditioner, split + aux XLR panel, x32r, router, USB hubs and video output, DMX device, and sennheiser wireless mic) and a SKB 4U stacked on top (drawer (packs, battery charge station, iems), iem receivers) but they are not shock mount =\ Plastic roto cases take up some shock but not like yours does!! But the handles are molded in to the rack(in fact, they are large and hollow and even helped with cable routing!) - they are beefy! Can’t believe they went with the handle style you’re complaining about… I went to the link you posted to look and I could definitely see those breaking with heavy use. Too bad - go back SKB!!

On the MR18, with Mixing Station, everything is so simple, easy to find and navigate to. The MR18/XR18 mixers have more effects (51 I think?). I dunno, I may still end up getting a 32r, for the form factor (32 channels, boom), but not looking forward to setting up monitor mixes. Lol. @@davebrownentertainment7191 see, I actually much prefer the user interface on the software. And I like that the iPad app is the exact same as the desktop app. For me, I had no issues there. My only, and truly only gripe is that AVB is essentially a dead protocol. Very few devices interface with it. If they through a firmware update to make it Dante it would be damn near perfect. I prefer that it has modeled eq and compression across every channel, I prefer the way it can flex route on 16 busses PLUS a main left right output. The software has been nothing but reliable for me. Granted, I haven’t used the avb to slave to another board, so that may still be a thing. But - ultimately, I just felt the Midas and behringer to be a bit limiting for the money.

Hmmmmm. Without being there and following the cabling - it would be hard to totally put my finger on. But it’s likely either: 1. Wireless interference - if you don’t have a paddle antenna - it very well could be that. 2. It could be that signal levels inside the console are too low and now you’re turning up pack volumes super high to compensate. 3. Cables - if you are using unbalanced TS vs TRS ... albeit this one is a little more of a stretch, but it’s still a possibility. Hey, we, too, are currently thinking about rebuilding our IEM rig and selling the X32 for a Presonus 32r as we want completely independent inputs (preamp/gain) for FOH and IEM. We would use ch1-16 of the 32r for IEM and 17-32 for FOH. Question: What about phantom power using the Seismic splitter snake? Isn't there the risk of sending phantom power twice to a device or backfeeding an input, that has 48V deactivated?
@TheSteveKinney
@TheSteveKinney Жыл бұрын
Yes - this particular split snake is not good for using phantom power. The great thing - is that the way I designed the build - nothing here requires phantom power. But if so - there are a few tools by triton audio that can fix the problem. And also / a different split snake can work great / might be simpler.
@brett-westgrove-country-music
@brett-westgrove-country-music Жыл бұрын
The phantom thing seems pretty overblown and maybe a relic of times before 48v was standardized on the preamp end…? Two sources of 48v DC through a y-cable is still 48v DC on the other end. The only difference is the mic could theoretically pull double the amperage (half from each pre) should it need it or is broken (in which case it’s already broken). I’d say most (all) modern pre’s are standardized to 48v and can surely even handle a few volts variation. I’d bet this idea comes from days gone by where some preamps used lower than 48v for phantom and back feeding 48v from the other side of the split would over-volt the circuit…? Anyway, I run both Seismic and my hand-built passive splits in everything from clubs (with clueless FOH guys) to massive festivals, and have 3-5 phantom mics on stage - I guarantee they and my x32r have seen “double phantom” on many occasions. Also to note, a lot of fancy, custom-built fly rigs use passive splits, too, and it seems to work great for them as well! Anyway, just my take and experience - and maybe can save a budget bad a few bucks, or keep some from being afraid of splitting condensers! Unless your rigs are on two entirely different power systems that could cause noise issues isolation is probably not necessary. It certainly won’t ever hurt but it’s much more expensive and not actually as pure of a split! Hope it helps - let me know if I’ve overlooked anything! 🤘🏻🎸

It can scan for open channels super easily; never once ran into any sort of trouble with it yet. The iem’s themselves, the xsw’s - they sound great and work awesome with the combiner. Don’t have any issues there. I just wish I got a better unit so scanning for open channels was easier… that’s a manual process so if your short on time.. that would be a pain. I haven’t run into an issue with not having an open channel, but still, lol manually looking is a bit tedious. Hopefully this helps ya out!

@@TheSteveKinney Thanks for the reply! That's a bit strange. I could not find any information about an internal antenna in the microphone receiver. According to the manufacturer's website, the Sennheiser EW-100/300/500 Microphone Receiver is a True Diversity system that uses two antennas on the back and should not be connected to a combiner. I believe you when you say that it's working for you, however technically speaking, I don't understand how it could work in case you aren't using any of the two small antennas that came with the unit and have the receiver connected to a combiner (which you aren't supposed to do, even just to power it up). Please don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to tell you what you are supposed to do. I just wish it would be possible to build a rack with both IEM transmitters and instrument receivers but the only way that's possible is if you use external antennas which are spaced apart. Otherwise you run the risk of intermodulation and instability of both systems.

@@alannoruspur5315 I’m not sure if I was clear, so I apologize - I’m only connecting the microphones receiver to the combiners power supply rather than using the power brick it came with. That’s all. I’m definitely not using the antenna from the combiner because that wouldn’t work. I’m using the two built in antennas that attach to the back of the rack unit. And it works flawlessly. When setting up, the first thing I do is power everything up and let the mic unit scan for open frequencies. Then I move on to the other wireless units. Not once have I had issues. But yeah / the only thing using the paddle antenna is the wireless in ears. Again, mic is using its built in antennas.

This video is about building a live rig with a split for IEMs. Your solution for IEMs was to use the wireless IEMs you already had.
@TheSteveKinney
@TheSteveKinney Жыл бұрын
I had 1 wireless unit already. The rest had to be picked up. And this entire unit is truly for IEM. The split is what’s used to go to FOH. The mixer is whats used to build the IEM mixes for each person..

I know - I really need to make the follow up video.. There are some great bits on why but just so you don’t have to wait, to summarize. Modeled eq’s and compressors across every channel vs behringers 8 busses More flexible routing, and assignable Headohone outputs Better pres, easier to understand software The iPad app is the same as the desktop app, so you’re not missing features at all Smaller device footprint, all I/o is included on the device vs behringer needing the additional device to get the full I/o The soundchecking software is sooo great (presonus capture) - vs behringers nothing That’s largely the reasons

@@TheSteveKinney able to give a few sentences on why you went presonus?
@TheSteveKinney
@TheSteveKinney 2 жыл бұрын
@@jakejaket For one: To get the same I/o out of the behringer rack unit, you need an additional device. Presonus is 2U rack space. Behringer would then be 6U and two devices. So it makes more logistical sense. The next biggest reason is that the headphone output can be assigned to follow the mix of any of the outputs. Where as the behringer is only on the main left and right. This whole rig will be next to the drummer, which means that his personalized in ear monitor mix can then be patched to the headphone out. Long story short, very flexible for routing. THEN. The real kicker. On the behringer unit, it has modeled plugins, but you can only use 8 models, for the whole board via the sub mixes. On the presonus, you can have modeled eq’s and compression on EACH channel. For all 32 channels. Plus subgroups. In addition, each channel has its own limiter as well. So overall, it’s a far superior mixing console. Only thing that behringer has is the fact that most venues buy it since it’s the bare minimum for a FOH system.
