honestly I went into alternative fashion with a lot of disposable income - as a minor with a job but not paying rent yet - and super expected it to be very quick and easy to start my pastel wardrobe. it took me a pretty long while of buying exclusively statement pieces to realize I needed a *capsule wardrobe* to start, and *then* do the fun things. I only found your channel like 3 days ago but I'm loving it and we're in line on a lot of things, so I'm really glad I found you. keep it up babey ur a force to be reckoned with

Saaame. I started really getting into fashion as a tween, but I wasn't focussed on my style. All I knew was that I had twenty dollars to spend and a Kmart nearby to get low quality, badly designed t-shirts from. Yay! But then I realised that maybe I didn't need a grey polyester t-shirt with minnie mouse printed all over it. Maybe there was a reason all the clothes I bought were on sale for $2-5. So instead of treating clothes like a cheap adrenaline rush, I treated them like a work-in-progress artwork. It's going well.

Right now im trying to build up a wardrobe of quite a bit. Since im 15 and are with my parents still. I feel like now is the best time to build up with main things. So that when i move out and start life styling my lolita fashion, I'll already have plenty of items but if i ever want something new, it'll be easy to get. Cause ya know. If i dont need it. I already have enough for wearing. Then i can pay rent and eat food. And extra money can all go to my lolita wardrobe and cosplay hobby uwu
@sketchingstudio55524 жыл бұрын
That's my plan too! While I'm not into lolita, I am into alternative fashion and I know that's not going to change. There's no need for me to waste my hard-earned money on low-quality products when I have the means to really care about what I buy. So when I'm going to University and stuff I'll already be happy with my wardrobe and I can focus on the loans and books and whatnot.
@shenenigans20373 жыл бұрын
Me, too! I'm building up my basics now, while I have the freedom to be horribly picky, and invest in quality. I don't know how much my style will shift in the coming years, but unless I pull a hard 180, I'm still going to want the same basics (*cough* mostly black *cough*). This way, if my taste does change a bit, all I need are new statement pieces. And if it stays the same, then I can put my money and time into fun pieces, or into the rest of my life. I don't expect to have a very stable income once I turn 18, and knowing I'll have clothes I love, and that will last, and it won't be taking all of my income, is a really comforting thought. :)

I’ve noticed that especially with knitting my own clothes I’ve become a lot more conscious and careful about the specific yarn and fiber I purchase or spin for my projects. It has to be something that makes me truly happy to hold and excited to use, and nothing except for that. Not only will I be wearing the finished garment, but I will be making it one stitch at a time, so it must be a fiber, color, and texture I absolutely love. Yes, It’s been a massive learning curve (and I’m still learning), but I think for the most part I have a clear idea of what I want out of my handmade wardrobe.

I love that you mention that not everyone needs to boycott fast fashion. I see way too many people acting like others are horrible if they buy from fast fashion brands without even considering that not everyone can afford to do so, or, in my case, not everyone can do it and still find clothes that fit. That being said, I prefer second hand clothing because that is the only way to find stuff that fits me where I live for most items. However, I can't buy pants without needing to tailor them all in which I don't always have time for, so I do have to buy them from kind of fast fashion brands. (women's pants are trash and don't fit me so I only get men's which aren't typically true fast fashion made items.

Hi, I've been watching your videos for a few months at this point, and I happen to quite love them. They inspired me to take a look at my hoarding habit, especially in relation to clothes, and work on cutting down on the clothes in my wardrobe. I had so many things that I almost never wear, and had been so long since I had worn that they no longer fit me whatsoever! It's actually feeling amazing to cut down my wardrobe like this. I want to eventually get into lolita fashion as well as 50s & 60s inspired vintage fashion and make wardrobes for those as well, and I feel like cutting down my main mainstream wardrobe is a step in the right direction for that, to work on making that smaller and more manageable so I can learn how to work with a smaller wardrobe and limited options, as well as not buying things on impulse to make that wardrobe large again. It will probably be a while still until I can start my wardrobes of alternative fashion, but learning these skills from watching these videos of yours is definitely helping me with what I can do right now. I've already tried my hardest to keep pieces in my wardrobe for as long as possible and in great condition, but I still had a hoarding problem of just continuing to collect new items (I need to learn not to do this). I'll keep your advice about not rushing your wardrobe in mind when I do eventually get a chance to start to build my alternative fashion wardrobes, but for now I'll focus on the advice from your videos about saying no to buying more clothes and I might try to build a basics table out of what is left of my personal wardrobe when I finish this culling. Things that I am removing are first offered to my younger sister as hand-me-downs, but if she doesn't want them they're going to be donated to thrift shops (after being washed, of course!) and I just want to thank you for your videos inspiring me to do this. It's something I should have done for years now, but always found excuses not to... until your videos gave me more reasons why I should. So I want to thank you for that, and for all of your lovely content! I hope you're doing well and continue to make your interesting and helpful content at whatever rate is most comfortable for you! Have a wonderful day! Sincerely, Em

Also please note there's a difference between buying some things as a beginner to going on shopping sprees as an extremely experienced member of the fashion community! If you're new, of course you're gonna want to buy a few things at once, and you'll probably want to buy a couple so that you can start working on building a real wardrobe! This is not the same as spending 8000$ on it, but if you buy a couple skirts/blouses/dresses, that'll be good to help start putting things together!

Your timing is excellent. I'm about a year into a style overhaul and I really went in thinking that I was gonna just push it and get it done in a year. I feel like it also depends on which kind of wardrobe is your goal. I know my goal is far more dark mori or strega, so even though I'll want some jewel tones, greys, and autumn colors, a majority is going to be black. I feel black clothing, no matter the style is incredibly easy to get since it is that neutral above all neutrals, leaving the main restriction to be quality.

But after two years, I got a few pairs of pants, some shoes, skirts, and a couple great tops. And a couple days ago I got an absolutely beautiful pleated pastel patterned skirt, and an embroidered blouse that fits me great. It’s going to take years before I have anywhere near my dream wardrobe, but it’s coming.

I'm finally working on building up my gyaru wardrobe and i'll admit I have a lot of impulse purchases. Part of it is because I want a bigger wardrobe right now, but also partly because I mainly buy second hand Liz Lisa and most of the items I want sell within minutes of being posted or a couple days if you're lucky. I feel like with fashions like lolita and gyaru it's harder to not rush building a cohesive wardrobe simply because of how limited and coveted the clothes are. You could see your dream dress available one day and then never see it for sale for god knows how many years, if ever the next day.

Question about your wardrobe! Sorry if you addressed this in another video, I'm a fairly new subscriber. For the fast fashion items you did purchase before you were fast fashion free, did you sell/donate all of those items or did you retain a few? And do you still occasionally buy second hand items that maybe were fast fashion, or at least are you not opposed to it? I know you probably wouldn't want to because of quality but from an ethical standpoint. I have an excessive amount of clothing as I used to have a huge problem with impulse buying. I grew up low income and retained a lot of the old shopping habits I had as I got older (still now) and now that I have more of a disposable income, I've bought way too many inexpensive clothes and a lot of those pieces being fast fashion. Some of those items I can't picture parting with but I also want to do better about buying more ethically now, or at least not from large chains so I'm not supporting that industry.
@TheStitchess4 жыл бұрын
You don’t have to throw away your old fast fashion pieces - it’s probably less sustainable in the long run to do that, actually. Even if you buy from sustainable brands, the real problem is the speed at which we purchase new things. Keeping old fast fashion in circulation is a good thing, even if they came from dubious sources. I still have a few pieces of fast fashion in my wardrobe but I’m still using them and buying something new to replace them isn’t exactly feasible because of money. Sustainably made goods are inherently more expensive because you actually pay for the materials and labor - so I can’t just go out and buy all sustainable brands all the time every time I want something (but luckily that‘s where secondhand shopping and sharing comes in). Thrift stores are mostly old fast fashion these days, so even secondhand it’s hard to avoid. When I shop in person I don’t look at brand labels at all. I look at fiber content and care labels, as well as the overall quality and construction, and that’s all I consider. I don’t wind up with much fast fashion because it usually doesn’t fit my standards but I occasionally do buy it secondhand from a thrift shop - usually a locally owned shop that donates money to a food bank or shelter as those are the stores I shop in most. I’m not THRILLED it was fast fashion by any means, but it keeps useable textiles out of landfill and that is the ultimate goal.

I don't think I've ever really bought something on an impulse, I haven't even bought a single clothing item this year and I don't even remember when the last time I bought any clothes was. I've always had the mindset of "if I don't need it, I won't buy it". I've only bought like 3 decorative things for my room and two of those were more than 3 years ago lol. My mom bought me a couple things but I would've probably never bought those myself lol.

Watched: October 27th and November 15th, 2020 I've been interested in lolita, punk, goth, and alt fashion for a while now and I can't really buy any of it yet so this video is really helpful, thank you!! I hope I can start buying clothes more sustainably and waste as LITTLLLLE as possible. Thankfully, I'm not really someone who would go and buy a whole wardrobe worth of clothes in one day :> I also added your fashion advice playlist !! Subbed at 72.3k

And every once in a while, you might live with terrible people and that wardrobe may be stolen; multiple times. This is where having them handy-dandy sewing skills come in handy. (Losing it all _twice_ has resulted in me being a closet goth for a _looooonnnnngggggg_ time. Silver lining, though: I am now _much_ more comfortable with my faceial features. Weirdly, though, I can't do eyeliner to save my life anymore XD)

If you're interested in sewing or vintage fashion, I'd also like to suggest Evelyn Wood, Karolina Zebrowska, and Bernadette Banner's videos. Micarah Tewers is another fashion youtuber who talks about DIY/ sewing, even if to my knowledge she isn't into vintage/ alternative fashion.

Being a beginner anything is frustrating. The frustration of being a beginner in something like fashion feels extra hard because it seems like money literally would solve all our problems. You can't buy talent to be able to draw, but if you just had enough money, you could buy those dream clothes. It's not true, but that's the shortcut that our brains make when we ignore that people with large collections of amazing clothes that they style in great ways took years. And that those people also started somewhere. There was once a time when Tyler Willis also had only one lolita dress to her name. But that's not what an eager beginner sees first.

I don’t buy clothes often, and I always try to thrift before considering buying new, but quarantine has taken it to an extreme, lol. I think I’ve bought a total of maybe 2 (?) thrifted garments so far this year because a) I don’t feel comfortable going to the thrift store yet, and b) I wear the same t-shirt and jeans every single day working from home. 😅 Anyone else relate?

Oh god ME. Seriously. I don't even really have an "alternative style," (just an uncommon body type tbh) but I have made So Many Mistakes in buying clothes from shady sites or cheap crappy knockoffs for the sake of "getting my wardrobe built NOW" that it's only resulted in me creating a ton of waste and spending about 3x as much as I would have had I simply waited for something to be back in stock on the reputable site or to find a piece I actually like to wear :( It sure has been a learning curve

I'm aiming for a vintage sustainable capsule wardrobe and think I only need one more piece (which I have reserved on depop - handknitted 1970s chunky cardi). But this has come from years of acquiring the odd item here and there, and becoming more comfortable in the style. I want to be more sustainable, but there's no way my student ass can replace a full set of pants with the low end of the sustainable price range being £15 a pair.

I've been looking for the perfect stripped shirt for layering for weeks now, which is good for me and a record. Still need to work on my impulse control on hats a bit. Also if anyone knows a good place for nice sturdy tights?

I get tights from Joe Browns and they last well.

Can someone help me😖👉👈 I'm not the one choosing my clothes, my mom does it for me and whenever I ask for any clothing either says something like "ooh do you really want that, it doesn't look good", "no that looks awful" or "you already have that" when what I have is what she gets me/what I don't like and I often hear that I dress like an 8 year old and I just don't feel like myself. Edit: my English is bad is know

My wardrobe consist of 60% clothing I've had for years and wear almost everyday because their all handpainted, 39% knockoffs I bought from AliExpress and 1% stuff I've had for years but rarely wear cuz I got it from my mom or just don't do regular clothes lol

Hi! 1st: Thanks for being here. Your videos are amazing - and you are super cute :D My question - what about when you need to get your wardrobe together Fully from almost nothing ? I’ve lost a lot of weight and I didn’t bother buying new clothes so far but now I really have to. I think this is great chance for me to change to alternative clothing (gotish, darker style mixed with Kpop Funnily enough ) - but time I don’t have much for it - anyway I followed your new wardrobe tutorial - but I still haven’t bought any clothes ^^ (not time yet). - Lockdown allows a lot - but after it ends I really need new ones quickly - What do you suggest in that case?
@TheStitchess4 жыл бұрын
Maybe plan out a basic capsule wardrobe of things you know you will needs? A handful of tops and a handful of bottoms that all mix and match, a few dresses or one pieces if you wear those, and you probably already have a pair of shoes and a bag that go with everything. It depends on your budget and style tho.

off topic but how do u keep ur hair so soft looking
@TheStitchess4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for thinking it looks soft lol I just straighten it and curl in the ends and my bangs (using a heat protection spray beforehand). I also bleach it a ton so I use a lot of deep conditioners but most of the time it feels like straw 😅
