Like most in my field, I work 60 to 70 hours a week and have pretty much one day off every seven days. I am in my 28th year in my profession and I have no complaints....I see stuff that most people can never think about or dream of. But, I leave that behind me when I get in the car to leave work and drive home. When I’m home, and my family is fast asleep, I pour a glass of wine and watch a video about Rolexes. Walked into my local Rolex AD. Explained that I’m not loaded, but I’m retiring from the armed forces after twenty odd years and wanted to treat myself to a keepsake that I wasn’t going to flip and wanted to hand down to my son. Had a really good chat over a coffee with the brand manager. He said he’d see what he could do. Rang me back three weeks later and I went in the next day (about a month ago) and picked up my stainless black sub date. Absolutely fantastic experience. I’m going to save up for my next one and go back to the same place.

Totally agree on the name thing ....it’s the updated Batman ! I don’t own one so no agenda but for me the guys that had the original Batman christened the new one the Bat girl to protect their own investment . All the moaning about the heavily scratchable centre links in the oyster bracelet pre updated model . No mention of that now. I suppose it’s human nature. That said call it what you want imo the jubilee bracelet is how the GMT should have been presented from history and is the best version. If I had a choice I know which one I’d pick. 👍🏻

Per your advice, I am moving away from the Rolex mass manufactured overhyped “brand” to a true “watchmaker” that hand manufactures, polishes, and engraves only 5,000 watches per year. It was 2016 when my brother and I got our first Rolexes. I had my eyes on a GMT and he was targeting the Sub "No Date." Without any appointments and not making any calls, we visited 4 AD locations in a day. 2 of them had the 116710LN available and on display while the other 2 had the 114060... I was even able to get an 8% discount on my GMT while my brother hot his Sub at full retail. Those were the days! Only the Hulk, the Batman, the Daytonas, and the like were hard to come by while the "standard" black GMTs and Subs (& even the polar Explorer II) were on shop windows. Certainly not the case anymore. Cheers!

crni_tekac it is crazy, but there are different ways to define value. Waited 18 months for a SS Ceramic Daytona for 13k, but the market price (value) is currently 24-26k. It’s a nice watch, but I got my JLC master compressor extreme lab 2 for 26k, that’s a serious chronograph.

Yeah .. can’t afford the new omega bond watch .. there’s a couple in my local omega shop .. but at $12,000 (CAD) I ain’t getting that anytime soon. Now that was some funny shit. So true about being a good customer. We walked into our AD looking for sky dwellers and our seller whispered, what about a Yachtmaster II in steel? We said yes please but she then whispered, we are holding it for another customer but the reserve ends in 15 minutes and they haven't shown up. So, we chatted for 15 mins, got the watch and as we were walking out a snobby breathless old lady came in looking for her yachtmaster. We just smiled at our dealer as they held the door open for us to exit. Sometimes the sun does shine on my ass!

Sorry folks, i think paying the £2000 or more extra, is the only way forward. The grail watches are out there, but not at your local AD, and never will be. If your dreaming of that no date Sub, then accept the fact your not going to pay retail price for it. Those days unfortunately are now gone, and if Rolex have their say, will probably never return.

If you want a rolex sports model you have 5 choices 1. Be on a wait list for god knows how long. Honestly I don't even think these "wait lists" are even real. 2. Pay a premium on the grey market 3. Buy a replica 4. Build a relationship with a dealer by buying watches that you might not want. 5. Buy something else

Any manufacturer that thinks their product is so good they expect their customers to suck dick to buy their product is going in the wrong direction. Market forces push these types of companies into the graveyard pretty quick. Their reputation hinges on a single bad review from a celebrity. I bought my Subby in the 1990's and had no issues. Just walked into a shop and bought it. Would not buy one these days. I own Longines, Baume & Mercer, Armand Nicolet and I see no difference in the quality of the watches versus the Rolex.

Rolex is not a mystery at all. They sell about 1M watches a year. A gold sub sells for about €35k a stainless sub sells for €8,5. To maximize profit Rolex makes more precious metal watches. By increasing production of stainless watches they will eat into their profit and sell less precious metal watches.

LOL, now...as for the black Submariner... I see that watch like a solid pickup truck with a V-8 engine. And no, you do not need Hulks and Kermits and Smurfs because you are a man, a man with class...not a clown to be painted in bright shiny colors. You need a black Submariner like you need a V-8 pickup or a blue blazer. You can have your sports cars. You can have your neat little convertibles. You can have a pinstriped blazer. But you MUST have that V-8 pickup, that black submariner and that blue blazer FIRST...before you can venture out. These are the basic building blocks of life for a man. Can't afford it at grey market price? No problem. You can pick up a really solid homage for a couple of hundred bucks, until you arrive. No one will fault you for it. I wore my Steel Dive 1953 for years before moving up to the Rollie. But for the love of Mike, TTWC, don't be telling these people they don't need one. They need one. They all need one.

I always wanted a Rolex when I was young because I loved watches till I saw them lolololol They look like garbage honestly now maybe 100 years ago they were great but now everything looks like a Rolex. I used to think they were like made of pure gold and that’s why they were so exclusive. Then I grew up and found out it was all BS branding and a bit of gold. I’ve been trying on some of the maxi case subs and gmts I just don’t like them compared with the 5 digit reference they look chunky with squared off crown guards and oversized lugs. I’ll keep my 16600 and start working towards a Kermit sub. Two class looking watches IMO

Unless you view watches as investments and think you can make a buck down the line then I would suggest look at other brands . I’m certainly no Rolex hater have three steel sports but if your buying grey maker you must be buying the name not the product . If I were entering this shameless crazy game again I would give far more consideration to brands such as glashutte , . Producing pieces that are unquestionably a league apart from Rolex at comparable prices ..For me there is something very appealing about wearing exquisite quality without predictable branding ..

I did not need the name Rolex on my wrist quite that badly. After six months of use, the movement has kept accurate time and I enjoy having it on my wrist and admire it several times a day. As Oisin has said in a past video, no one really notices your watch or the Rolex name. So don’t follow the herd as he says in this video. If you want a submariner on your wrist, get something like this, save several thousand dollars, and maybe put the money towards another brand. No stupid waitlist for this one either. I saw an identical watch to mine in the window of an AD in Salzburg. I compared both for a good five minutes and both were identical. Except the one in the window had the name Rolex and they wanted 36,400 euros for that name. Anyway, good luck with your search. Hope you find something.

I travel quite a bit and make a habit of visiting Rolex authorized dealers at every destination (pre-Covid, by appointment only now). Believe it or not some of those “sought after” watches are available out there. I’m not looking for the sub or the hulk or the batgirl. But I’ve been offered each of those watches several times after just walking into an AD’s shop with no prior relationship. These watches are not unique by any stretch of the imagination but it does take patience and time to secure them. If that is what you want rest assured that they are attainable.

I have paid tourneau sales people in nyc extra money on the side and have obtained the rolex watches I have wanted. For 2k on the side I got a pepsi gmt within 3 weeks of inquiring. I also paid 1,500k extra to get the hulk. Its a game and or scam.Depends on your view.I would rather pay a salesperson at an AD extra money then spend double on the watch from the gray market.

Listen, my fellow horologists: What a watch is "worth" is an statement of value, and value has only ONE meaning. It is not the cumulative cost of the bricks and sticks used to build a house. It is not the cumulative cost of the gears and springs that tell you the time. It is none of that. "VALUE" is what people are willing to pay, nothing more, nothing less. Supply and demand are the vehicles by which you get there, but in the end, it is what people are willing to pay. So, just stop jumbling nonsense around in your heads. AD retail price is a fairy tale for the majority of us. It does not exist because you cannot have it. So, why waste your time figuring out how to water a unicorn? The price of the Rolex watch that most of you want IS the flipper price. Whatever those guys are selling for, THAT's the price. If people weren't willing to pay that, they'd be selling them for less. So, just quit overloading your brains. Is the watch worth the price at which you can actually buy? If yes, buy and enjoy. If no...buy something else. There need be nothing complicated about this.

I must think you are naive, the business is with the grey market, for abusive prices you can buy any Rolex. Is not about production is about greed that abuse the desire of the people that just want the watch., I don’t believe anymore about high demand is about AD doing business with the grey market. Is not illegal but is nasty.

I have nothing against Rolex or Rolex owner, but I hate those Rolex owner who thinks they are "watch aficionado". Those aficionado who only have Daytona and Sub in their encyclopedia as the best and most beautiful watch for that type.

Thank you for the nice video, and others that you have made. I must confess though that I disagree with some of the things you said. And I really hope you do not take this badly, because it is not intended to be so: it's just opinions formed on experience. Are Rolex watches difficult to get? Yes. Are they impossible to get? No. Can "lightning strike twice in the same place? In this case it happened to me. I just called the shop, asked if they had the professional model I wanted and next thing I knew I was on my way to purchase the item. Last time I simply walked in and purchased a Date Just. Now if you are talking about the Daytona steel, well that is another story. Because of the hype, authorized dealers will sell you such item only after you have purchased another two or three luxury watches, and these might include also non Rolex (Omega f.e.). I like your videos, please keep posting :-) Peace Ps: some people don't want to wait? Fine. Patience is one of the virtues that watchmakers have to possess and apply every single day. If not for other they could show a little respect for those people by having a little patience too.

Great video but I have to disagree to a point. It’s who you know in these AD’s as they look after there friends first. Plus lots of AD’s in the UK are getting caught selling direct to the grey market re sellers. I know one guy who got offered 3 of the hottest Rolex timepieces in a week. Best way to deal with it is vote with your feet. Go buy something else. Rolex will soon get the message.

How insecure do you have to be to care whether some people call your watch the batgirl. I have a batgirl and couldn't give a Castlemain four X whether some people call it the batman, batgirl, batthey, batperson or anything else for that matter. Some people like the oyster, some people (me) prefer the jubilee, i would have thought the people who find themselves in a position to buy these things would be mature enough to pay little attention to a nickname.

Those of us who are lucky enough to own a couple of Rolex steel sports model say keep making the cellini’s . The less the supply of the steel sports model the more valuable our current watches are. Selfish ? Yes , hey baby survival of the fittest.

Like the mathematics estimation on the production of these hot models. If one go further in the maths base on say 120 countries worldwide which has reasonable say 20 odd AD outlets each country, then you will begin to see that each outlet may receive less than 10 each model per year. Are you the lucky guy that will land one of these watches considering the grey market dealers may have already line up their sources to flip over to them

Hermes does a same thing with bags... It is a whole dance of a brand selling clearly overpriced stuff, and treating its clients as if they should feel honored if they are given the chance of dropping thousands of euros on a bag. Honestly, it is just infuriating.

It’s all about luck, last month I was lucky enough to get a call from an AD the 116610LN I was on the waiting list for just came in and if I still wanted it. I was there in 30 min and I felt like I won the lotto. I was on the waiting list for only 3 months!! 🍀

Having two Rolexes, they are obviously well constructed and durable but there is no exclusivity to them. They are not worth the brain death of figuring out how to acquire a new one.

ADS are should now be considered as wholesalers, and the grey dealers as the new retailers. Joe public can't get anywhere near SS sports watch now so if you want one (like I did) you'll just have to bite the bullet and pay, what is now the new retail price, from a grey dealer. at least you'll get what you want without all the bullshit that goes with it like buying other watches or jewelry that you don't want or waiting years on an ever lengthening wait list

What I don't get is they look after their VIP clients and sell them multiple SS models and turn away others. These same VIP clients sell models to the fucking grey market, happens in Australia heaps.
