Recently did a 250 mile camping trip with the GR86. Loved the fact that I could fit all our camping gear plus inflatable stand up paddles in the car. Have to admit it was pretty loud on the highway. But it was all worth it as soon as I got to the twisty roads.

Thanks for discussing fuel economy on trips. After Jack talked about his fuel numbers (low 20s) I was getting nervous about these twins. Glad to hear you got close to or around 30mpg, a place i feel a naturally aspirated I4/H4 should achieve considering no turbo.

I assume you're referring to Jack of savagegeese. I too was surprised at his report on fuel economy. I don't know if it's a consequence of the boxer engine, gearing, both, but Corvettes pulling same or better highway mpg is bizarre.

My wife and I bought our 2013 BRZ in July of 2012…one of only 6 available on the west coast at the time. The first 6 years, we lived in San Diego…and made 8 major road trips from there. Yosemite, Utah, Arizona, Oregon…the red woods, 101 from Oregon/California border to SD. During that time, it includes hours of commuting each day on California freeways. We have lived and driven through toooooons of snow (PROPER winter tires are key), torrential rain in the PNW…hot sunny summers in the southwest. Anyhow, in the 11 years we have owned our little underpowered turd, we put 100,000 miles in 6 years, 5,000 miles in the last 5 years. We have gone through 6 sets of tires, from all seasons to Michelin Pilots. The J02 recall at 90,000 miles…4 spark plugs and 1 water pump. Recently replaced the suspension with RSR springs, Bilstein B6, Whiteline bushings, StopTech brake kit, YellowStuff, stainless lines…anyways, we love our BRZ and will never get tired of it, or stop smiling when we back out the driveway. Maintenance and CARE are all a car needs to last for yeeeeeears. Torque dip aside, we wouldn’t trade it for the world! FA20 FoLife!!! Proud of Boxer❤

I love that the car is”compliant” too. Even when you are spanking the car on Sunday morning backroads, they are seldom “track smooth” and the new car has a supple fluidity that the Gen 1 lacked. When you keep a car light and make the body stiff, then you can make the suspension relatively soft without making the handling unruly. Lotus have always ridden well. Ditto Alpine, MX5/Miata. Sports cars don’t need to be punishingly uncomfortable.

Thanks for the report on real life road trip summary. It was good to hear how your mpg turned out, and also good to get some reviews of the headlights (something not easy for most of us to be able to test on a demo drive with the dealership, plus it is so rare for any of the on-line reviewers to do a night drive and report on headlight quality).

Glad to hear this further testimony on the suspension tuning. I have a BRZ coming in September, hopefully, and most of the back roads around me are hardly what I call smooth, and I’m not planning to track it. Sounds like the BRZ > 86 for dealing with those kind of roads, which is good for me as similar to you i started out looking for an 86 and gave up because they weren’t taking orders and charging 20% over MSRP for what they had.

Did my longest trip so far in my 22' last weekend, about 5.5 hours in the car total in one day, mostly highway. The cockpit is snug but reasonably comfortable. Good thing my ass is relatively narrow because the seats are tight. Not Cadillac quiet but not obnoxiously loud either at 75mph. Rides well, a perfect balance I think between ride and handling for public roads. Climate control system is excellent. Too much buffeting to have the windows all the way down at highway speeds. I am in my early 50's, have arthritis and am anemic. Because of this I find my limit in this car is about 2.0-2.5 hours before I have to get out and stretch or I start to cramp up. If I was 19 again I would drive all day til the petrol ran out. Speaking of which, I averaged 34.4 mpg for the whole trip. My previous longest run, again primarily highway and done in two 110 mile stints averaged 34.9 mpg with fewer stops so it seems pretty consistent. I tend to keep it within 5 mph of the posted limit. Will be taking a solo camping trip in September that will include a longer driving stint. Have already test fitted my camping gear and it all fits nicely even if it is more stuff than I would like to carry. Not as young as I used to be so I can't completely rough it anymore. Will have to leave the Kayak at home though. Compared to the MG Midget that I drove from Santa Barbara to San Francisco when I was 19, this is the greatest road trip GT car ever.

WhereI live, Subaru dealers have refused to sell BRZs since the 1st gen. So the only way to get one is importing one from the states or going to a Toyota dealership and buy an 86. I asked these Subaru dealers why don’t they want to sell BRZs and they say that they don’t think their clients want RWD Subarus 🙃. Yet Toyota dealers here sell them in less than 48 hours every time they arrive.

Only thing I would disagree with are the seats, which obviously is very subjective. In my case, they are hands-down the most uncomfortable seats I've ever had, and I'm coming from a '19 WRX and a '16 before that, which both had super comfortable seats. I'm 5'10" 190 lbs, so not huge, but not tiny either, and I do have wide hips for a guy(even when I was 150 lbs I still had a 36" waist). That said, the seat bottom bolsters were way too snug and hard for these seats - to the point that they were making my leg go numb and becoming painful after only about 15 mins in the car. Ended up have to remove the bolster support wires and most of the bolsters themselves, replacing them with super soft filler in order to keep the seat shape. Now, they're significantly better and tolerable, but still not the best. Never had to modify seats like this in 35+ years of driving. Good enough to hold out for better aftermarket seats though, which for me at least, are necessary.

Fuel economy is always important, so thanks for covering that. I'm tired of these clowns why say "it's a sports car. If you want good fuel economy, buy a (fill in econo-box of choice)". This sentiment is just idiotic in my opinion. Even in a pickup truck, fuel economy is a major factor to anyone who wants to save money at the pump. Rant aside, I am currently cross shopping the BRZ Limited and the Miata GT soft top, both in manual, and thanks to discounts that are available to me, both cars would be excellent deals. The Miata would wind up being about $2000 more than the BRZ, but the Miata's drop top more than compensates for that price premium in my opinion. The much improved and bargain priced BRZ can't be ignored though.

I was also conflicted between these two, but what pushed me to edge towards the GR86 was that the GR Corolla is still based on the corolla platform, above all. The GR86 feels like a real sports car, while a GR Corolla will always be a hot hatch, a really great hot hatch. The other is that i fell in love with the CE GRC with that carbon roof. But then I thought what if there was a CE GR86? Then itd be no brainer GR86. So it proved to me I actually prefer 86, I just wish it had a CE version.

I am still surprised they want to gear this car so aggressively that it turns well over 3000rpm at 75mph in sixth. Pretty much the same 6th gear as my ND2's 2.0L, and I already thought that car was silly overgeared. I'm sure the excessive revs contribute to a lightweight, aerodynamic car with a 2.4L getting official fuel economy ratings much worse than you would expect.

I prefer for cars with smaller engines to keep the revs higher in top gear. I'll gladly pay the price in lost mpg to avoid lugging. My NB1 Miata turned 4k at 70 mph, and I'll admit, it took some getting used to. Once I got used to it, I didn't want to go back.
@thatoneotherotherguy
@thatoneotherotherguy 2 жыл бұрын
@@jayjacaty3009 I just don't think it's necessary gearing in a modern car. That engine (like the Miata) has considerable mid-range torque, and 6th gear is not used in a sporty fashion. I say keep the first 5 gears close ratio, and let 6th be a real highway gear. There's no way this engine would lug at 2700rpm at 75, unless you're going up a 10% grade. It's a big MPG penalty that just saves you from downshifting to 5th a couple times on a road trip.

Im absolutely torn between a BRZ GR86 or Civic Si with the HPD package, the civic has the BOSE audio with the full safety suite whereas the twins are RWD but are lacking a decent audio system and a active safety suite in the MT models. Given that I already have a NC1 Miata I’m thinking it’ll still scratch my RWD itch if I go with the Si

Hey Chris! Been around for a long long time, I had a 2013 that I bought mainly because of your brz! I am trying to decide between ordering a 23 brz or a GR86. I just wanted to ask you if you could tell the difference between the two in terms of throttle response/ rev-hang? I’ve seen the graph showing the GR86 tune closes the throttle faster and I can’t find anyone who has driven them both and noticed a difference?

I live in Minnesota and run 17" Michelin X-Ice Snows on it, driving with no difficulty. Took delivery in mid-January and had to drive it for 3 days on the Pilot Sport 4's before the snow shoes arrived. 5th gear in the driveway is not fun. Did not get the opportunity to use it in any big storms with heavy snow as we didn't get any but on a few inches of fresh snow, hard pack, or ice I could drive it no problem at all. Got along better than the folks around me using all-seasons I thought.
