Chris, This Avalon offers 43+ miles per gallon of pure class. As I recall, Charlie got 48 mpg on his 70 mph test loop. People should snap these up while they still can. At least we live in an age where consumers get advanced warning that models or options are coming to an end. I still find it amazing that a car the size of an Avalon can easily exceed the mpg of an ordinary Corolla, Civic or Elantra.

I drove this back-to-back with the ES300H. The Avalon feels cheap next to the ES. Given how close in price they are, I suspect most buyers are going for the Lexus. I can't imagine most buyers of a larger luxury-ish sedan is stretching their budget to make $43k work, so the jump a few thousand up is probably just a blip on the radar. The Avalon is very nice, but the ES is much better around all the edges. You mean like VW group does with Audi and VW, make Toyota's as cheap looking as possible without destroying the image, while you make Lexus the opposite so that people would think that they are different brands. You will never be satisfied if you buy a decent car under a Toyota brand as long as there is luxury brand sales another car on a similar platform with more luxury. Accelerating to a normal speed in EV mode with a non-plugin hybrid is EXTREMELY inefficient. Sure, the engine is off, but when you convert energy, you lose energy. No free lunch, as I like to say.
@squidproquo22413 жыл бұрын
Your explanation has a flaw. A hybrid has a battery to assist the gasoline engine. With a full battery the conversion inefficiency will not effect the 0 - 60 times. After, the car reaches the travelling speeds the batteries are recharged. considering the average gas consumption and the performance, a hybrid car is far more efficient than an only gasoline engine car. If you tried to drive this Avalon with a gas only engine and achieved same mpg, your performance will be horrible. A Honda Accord Hybrid, for example, performs better and achieves better mpg with 2.0 liter engine than the 1.5 liter turbo engine alone Accord. Also this Avalon has a better gas mileage than non hybrid 2.5 liter Camry could have achieved with similar performance numbers. Whether, you like it or not, hybrid system is more efficient than only gasoline engine application, especially, if you consider the performance factor.
@aspecreviews3 жыл бұрын
@@squidproquo2241 I'm aware of that, but I'm talking about feathering the accelerator to get up to speed using only the batteries. That's where the conversion inefficiencies come into play. It's better to have the battery assist than have the battery alone accelerate the car.

@@aspecreviews "I'm aware of that, but I'm talking about feathering the accelerator to get up to speed using only the batteries. That's where the conversion inefficiencies come into play. It's better to have the battery assist than have the battery alone accelerate the car." Performance wise yes. However, battery technology is not there yet to make full electric cars as efficient as the non hybrid or hybrid vehicles. Instead of trying to give a verdict by performance numbers, if you think doing that by using the principles of Thermodynamics you will realize that full electric mobile machines that carry their own energy source, is not that efficient with current technology.
@edthelazyboy3 жыл бұрын
One of the purpose of the hybrid battery is to capture energy that would otherwise be wasted as much as possible. First, there is regen braking. Energy that would be lost to friction braking can be recovered to a degree minus some inefficiency. Second, the engine can be optimized for more efficiency and less power in general. Also, the engine when running can be kept in ideal power band more often. That's why Atkinson engines are used here. The electric motor helps to fill in the few times you need more power by helping the gasoline engine. Third, at moderate speeds when you don't need so much power, the hybrid system can send some power to the wheels and send the remaining power to the battery while the engine runs at efficient power band. Forth, the engine doesn't have to run at inefficiently slow speeds when you are stopped or in slow stop and go.

Long term reliability is not one of Tesla's strong suits. It's all electronics. Build quality for Tesla's are... not great. They have amazing customer service as long as you're under warranty but after the 3-4 year mark, you're going to be a big spender should any damages occur. I like tesla vehicles and have wanted one before but getting one just isn't a wise choice. Also not all places have readily available EV charging points. (If they do, they're kinda slow) This is coming from a guy who lives in SF, Cali. Having physical recharging/fueling stations is a must. This is why a good zero emission alternative is hydrogen.

You can't compare the two. A Toyota driver would not choose a Tesla unless reliability isn't there concern. Also you can work on the Avalon if you choose to keep it long term. I love telsas but they're not right-to-repair friendly in the slightest.

@@MiguelRPD I’m not saying it from that angle personally, I just don’t get moving this high into a price point where you can move into an entry level Lexus or something else that can be tons nicer for not much more, especially since Lexus has Toyota reliability and way more of a luxury feel for the money (though no hybrid option that “cheap”)
@MiguelRPD3 жыл бұрын
@@Wasssup3232 I believe the Toyota has more options than the base es350 but I could he wrong. I did sit in an Avalon and it's very nice. It's maybe ... 85% of what the es350 feels as far as comfort/ride quality.

Who in their right mind would pay $47k for a TOYOTA?? Genuinely curious as the competition at that level is insane. Lexus, Infinity, BMW. This is literally at Tesla long range model 3 price point. This just seems so bland for so much money. I guess that’s why it’s being discontinued tho

It’s amplified by the Binaural audio, not that loud in real life. And the eCVT is nowhere as bad as a standard CVT

I bought this car brand new. Nothing but issues since I bought it. I always drive Fords. This will teach me!!! All the dash lights have been coming on sporadically since I bought it. My dash lights light up like a Christmas tree. I’ve taken it into the dealership 25 times at least and they tell me I drive with 2 feet making all the lights come on, which is a total line of BS to try to point the finger at me. Not happy with a 50k car!! Thank God I bought 5 year warranty!!!! Crap!!!!!!

Pressing both pedals at once can cause problems. Also, the dash lights are supposed to turn on briefly when you start the car

Great car if you want low profile luxury and quality. I would never let my wife/gf drive a blingy Lexus or German car with all the carjackings and lawlessness these days -- they're too much of a crime magnet!

I'd be very interested in a Camry or Avalon Hybrid with a V6 (300HP) and a *Regular* 7 speed automatic. Especially if that electric motor drove the rear wheels and gave the car AWD... They could use cylinder deactivation or something to make it run on 4cyl during cruising to achieve more efficiency. I cant stand the horrible drone of a CVT when you give it the beans and anything sub 250hp is gonna feel sluggish. This is why Hybrids have always been a no-go for me.
