14:00 “… if you have any tips …”. My advice is, do not grind up everything. I give my dog raw, whole chicken necks, wings, drumsticks, etc. He crunches up the bones and the chewing and crunching cleans his teeth. I also give him big chunks of the cheapest, toughest meat I can find, also for the teeth cleaning. And raw beef ribs for the same reason. Chewing and gnawing is also good for a dogs mental health (so I have read); it releases serotonin. My dog often naps after a good bone gnawing session. BTW - There is a lot of good info about raw dog food on Paws of Prey channel.

Do you have an actual recipe with portion measurements available? I have 70 lb and 22 lb dogs and would to make and freeze ahead. Thank you.
@thetorontodogwhispereraka-71154 жыл бұрын
Angela Gibson You can start with this simple method. Total daily raw starting portion = 70lbs x 2% = 1.4 lbs per day. After you have that number use the 80% muscle meat, 10% bone and 10% organ meat ratio. So 1.4 x 80% = 1.26lbs of chicken quarters (includes bone and muscle meat) and 0.14lbs of organ meat (liver, kidney, tripe). Of course it is easier to do this on a larger scale like a week or 2 weeks. The calculation is the same, but you would portion out 1.4lbs for a day once you mix it all up. For 2 dogs you can combine them for the bulk number. For example 70+22 = 92lbs of dog that would need 92lbs x 2%= 1.84 lbs a day for both or 1.5 and 0.5 if you want to round it up. 2% of body weight is just a starting point assuming your dogs aren’t over weight, and are healthy adults. If you have a young, active dog, add more food to the daily portions, if your dog is older or over weight use less. Hope that helps. If you need more detailed info you can do me on Instagram and I can give you my number to call.

Fat is indeed okey to add a bit as dogs do need it. They derive there energy from it. As some already pointed out heart and gizzard are indeed not the organ meats. You’ll want a secreting organ next to liver like kidney, spleen or testicles. Next to that you seem to follow the overal ‘ratio’ diet. I started there too 4 years ago and I know feed following NRC requirements. Still raw just I count everything to make sure I provide all the nutrient requirements. Especial to make sure I have a proper calcium - phosphor ratio. But also copper and zinc work together so I’ll make sure they’re in close range and so on. [A bit more complicated but worth learning]

What is the freezer life before the food loses its nutrients? And more importantly how long does it last in the fridge before it goes bad? Can you add supplements like vitamins to your base?
@thetorontodogwhispereraka-71156 жыл бұрын
Leslie Caldwell I think the freezer life would be at least a month, although I’m not certain. I would say a week in the fridge would be fine. Dogs can eat meat that is a bit on the decomposing side. You can add any supplements as you see fit to this basic recipe. The supplements I added were the egg shells and sardines, but you can add an almost endless assortment of supplements as you see fit depending on your dogs needs.
@bettyshouna16856 жыл бұрын
Leslie Caldwell I'm sure it would last a long time in the freezer, but then it would be taking up lots of space. I don't have a deep freezer so I wouldn't want to keep it in there for more than a couple weeks.

You can customize your dogs raw diet as you like. That’s the best part!
@xlifewritex4 жыл бұрын
Does this ratio sound right. 5:1:1:1; which is 5 parts fresh meat muscle, 1 part fresh bone (or even simpler, 5 parts meat on the bone), 1 part fresh organ meat (liver, kidney, heart, with fresh liver being the most important) and 1 part veg ?
@thetorontodogwhispereraka-71154 жыл бұрын
xlifewritex Sounds a bit heavy on the veg part. As long as you are around the 75-80% muscle, 10% bone, 10% organ you should be fine. It’s not like baking where everything needs to be precise. The idea is more to see how your dog responds, and seeing how their poops are. If you have a healthy adult dog that isn’t over or under weight then you are on the right track. There’s lots of variables depending on age, activity level and weight even seasons impact dietary needs. Customize your dogs diet over time and find what works for you. Think of this guide as a starting point.

So blending may help with the process of him eating it but because he’s a toy poodle (known to have bad teeth) I want the benefits of him having cleaner teeth and I thought that could only have if they chew on the bones 🤔😕

Lazaro Gonzalez Start with a base of 2% of their body weight and adjust from there. So 2% of 70lbs is 1.4lbs per day. You can round up to 1.5lbs per day. If your dog is growing or is very active, you can up the amount to 1.75 - 2lbs per day. If your dog is older, less active or over weight then go down to 1.25 - 1lb per day.

Why does all the raw home made diets give mushy foods and not cubed meat,wouldn't that be more helpful for smaller or medium dogs or cats .(maybe even larger dogs as long as they don't try to swallow it whole). You can buy less expensive cuts of beef that are just as economical as ground beef. Ground beef has a lot more surface area which causes bacterial growth. It’s also better for your dogs teeth to chew on solid chunks of meat vs ground. Hope that helps.

A dog licks lots of nasty stuff, all much worse than raw food. Randeep Sanghera You need to give a puppy much more food because they are growing. Hi Latesha, Without a lot of detailed information, I’d suggest trying a variety of simple, homemade combinations of BARF diet. Itchy skin is usually caused by an allergic reaction. By the process of elimination you can isolate the allergic reaction. Keeping things simple with a few key ingredients should help with that process. If the itching is simply dry skin, add some coconut oil to their diet. It will help a lot. Hope that helps!

Leslie Caldwell Great questions! I was going to cover these in my next raw food video. You should plan on transitioning to raw gradually over a week to allow your dog to get used to any new diet, especially raw. I prepped Mosley for a week before I went all raw by mixing in more raw each day and less of his kibble. There was no diarrhea that way. In terms of fecal matter there is a huge change. so far this seems good. id recommend feeding organ meat from cows as those are the most nutrient dense. they are way better than chicken organs and pork organs. also, the other 5% should be secreting organs, such as kidney, spleen, ...etc

I have a hundred pound German shepherd how much of the raw food should I feed him a day ? I love your video !
@thetorontodogwhispereraka-71154 жыл бұрын
jonathan McGovern The basic starting point is 2% of their body weight. So about 2lbs per day for a 100lb adult dog. If your dog is elderly or overweight, I’d start with 1.5 lbs per day and see how your dog reacts over a few weeks.

I have a pending 1.5 year old German Shepherd but thinking when he’s older is he still able to chew through the bones? For bones he’s getting turkey necks. I’m much happier with his health since I’ve switched his diet to raw.

@@amandanazario2950 hi. If he can't eat raw soft bones, then grinding the bones will give him the nutrients from bone he needs.

What about the veggies?
@thetorontodogwhispereraka-71154 жыл бұрын
hanayaz You can add veggies as a supplement, but this video is just a basic raw diet. Thanks for watching!

Please tell me why a dog would need vegetables? What veggies does a coyote or wolf eat? People and k9s have been on earth for millions of years, veggies have only been around for thousands of years...... there is no need for veggies

Umm I think you should let the dog eat the bones full because it helps them clean their teeth.. And also you should add some veggies like carrots or celery.

Thanks, yes I agree. This was very early days of making my own raw, so it’s just a basic . If you follow me on Instagram yon see more recent examples of the food I make. IG is toronto_dog_whisperer

@thetorontodogwhispereraka-71154 жыл бұрын
steveace66 6 weeks old is too young to take a puppy away from its mother and mother’s milk.
@steveace664 жыл бұрын
Ohh really the breeder said here in Philippines that if it's not 6 weeks it will not recognize us. Thank you for the information though
@thetorontodogwhispereraka-71154 жыл бұрын
steveace66 The minimum age in Canada is 8 weeks old before leaving the mother. Dogs build bonds and relationships through the walk at any age. My advice is to wait till your puppy is 8 weeks old before picking them up from the mother.

Any one have a YEASTY DOG? My dog was having SKIN ISSUES.. for a very long time.. I could never get it under control. Even feeding grain free -Merrick- even once was on a very expensive $100 bag of PRESCRIBED kibble… ALL FAILED… 2 weeks after cutting out starch & sugars .. feeding RAW… and she now has fur growing back .. her chewing and constant licking is almost gone ! It makes a huge difference !

There’s no “prescribed” kibble that is as customizable as a homemade raw diet. Glad to hear your dog is doing better. Thanks for watching!
@elenadejesus74893 жыл бұрын
Hi Michelle B. How wonderful that you found what really works without having it waste your money on prescription " food" that doesn't help at all. Not only one hat but because he's doing well on raw, less trips to the vet
@elenadejesus74893 жыл бұрын
Also, grain free kibble still has things in it that is not good for your dog. Many grain foods have been recalled
