A few things about vodka that every Pole knows: Żubrówka (bison grass vodka) + apple juice = a coctail that tastes like apple pie. Cheap vodka is meant to be drunk by shots as chilled as it can be (use a refrigerator). Kraft vodka, or one with good quality, has to be drunk like whiskey. Mildly chilled in a glass. Sniff it a few seconds before your first sip. Your body will prepare for what’s to come. You’ll taste its distinct flavor also. There is a traditional type of Polish vodka called Okowita or Bimber. It’s made using old, traditional methods, and it’s almost always above 40% alcohol. It’s the preferred type of alcohol drank in rural regions of Poland and at traditional Polish weddings. Some people on KZbin try to drink Spirytus, which has 90% or more pure alcohol in it. It’s not meant to be drunk. Poles use it to make flavored mild liqueurs or use it in bakery. But… There is an old custom of drinking Spirytus to prove your manhood. When doing so, inhale before the shot and exhale immediately after drinking it. If you do it the other way around and inhale after a shot of Spirytus, there is a chance you're going to burn your lungs. So please don’t try it.

"No, it kinda tastes like vanilla!" Yep! Which is why that specific vodka is illegal in the US - Bison Grass contains too much coumarin (which kinda tastes like vanilla), which for dumb historical reasons makes it illegal. Now they make a slightly different version flavored with rye grass for the US market. (The base vodka, either way, is made from rye grain before it gets flavored with the bison grass.)

Couple of fun facts: 1. Vodka, or Wódka in Polish, originated from Poland. 2. Vodka means literally "wee water" 3. The first one is relatively new but already among some of the most popular brands 4. That caramel one is new to me so it is a bit of a novelty 5. Bison grass vodka is flavored with wild growing grass which is painstakingly gathered by hand 6. Bison grass vodka mixes perfectly with apple juice, especially a cloudy type 7. Belvedere is the name of Polish President's palace so a sort of Polish White House 8. The best known Polish vodka is called Wyborowa and it together with Russian Stolichnaya were for decades the best known vodkas in the world.

@@MsPheel Coumarine, the compound that gives żubrówka some of the sweetness and aroma is also present in cinnamon. So good intuition with this pairing. It's also slightly toxic to the liver so if you live in the states and buy Żubrówka there you get the nerfed version without it. (not that it would make any significant damage unless you would down a bottle every weekend, but at that point the alcohol will get you faster)

I'm Polish. Actually, more American than Polish. But I can tell you that once you try Polish vodka, the thought that you've been drinking crappy vodka before that point is very accurate. Polish vodka is world class and can stand with and even stand above ANY vodka from anywhere. The Poles do not mess around when it comes to making and drinking alcohol. Another top shelf brand to try is Chopin. Finally, since y'all mentioned Grey Goose, I will tell you that it is at best an average vodka. It's all hype and marketing. Same as Tito's.

2 of my favourite vodkas are from Poland. I went into university with the intent of trying every vodka at the liquor commission. I did well, but don't remember much else from university. Luksosowa (potato vodka) was my favourite vodka. Bar none. Middle shelf and better than the over priced top shelf ones. Zubròwka was my favourite mixer vodka. Was fantastic in a "Canadian Social" style vodka and cola. Vanilla like, but not overly sweet. Can't get the Zubròwka anymore here, so I'm jealous.

Żubrówka actually is for cocktails - everyone drinks it with apple juice, but i like it with pink grapefruit juice 😋 I have created a cocktail called "Tatanka" in Irish pub "Guinness" in Wrocław (plac Solny) - great pub, and was pleasantly surprised its still on the menu last time I was there🤠. Must try! Try it and put on your pub's menu- just stick to the name - Tatanka! - bison in native American ( from the film "Dances with wolves")

The best way to keep from getting a hangover, drink some water at the end of the evening. Hangovers are caused by dehydration 💦🫧🌊💧
@PiotrPilinko
@PiotrPilinko Жыл бұрын
More intensive hangovers are caused by congeners (which whiskey is full of, while vodka - not so much). The next day you need to provide a lot of fluids (like tomato juice or... sour water from pickled cucumbers - sounds terrible but it really helps).

A historian - Jerzy Besala - worked out the history of Poland "anew" and wrote "Alcoholic history of Poland". There are five volumes to this port, and they are, in order: Times of the Piasts and the Noble Republic, Times of partitions and uprisings, Times of the Great War and the Second Republic, Two occupations 1939-1945, Times of the People's Republic of Poland. Each volume averages 600-700 pages ;)

I've been a Stoli girl for years now, but with that glowing review, I may have to give the ol' Belvedere a go next time! And whenever there's a sweet, tasty drink, I immediately crave a RumChata, I don't know why, I guess it's my go-to 'this doesn't tastes like alcohol it tastes like dessert' drink, haha!

I doesn't matter how pure your alcohol is, a hangover is also known as a dehydration headache because alcohol dehydrates you. Drink water, between drinks.

On the Bison vodka, me as a Polish/American I drink it right away. Also, it gets very nicely with apple juice in a mix. But many years ago I heard a story that there was a company from US trying to transplant this bison grass from Poland to US and it all failed. Supposedly, this grass grows uniquely in Poland in the north eastern part right at the border with Belarus. Another interesting fact is that Poland and the US cooperated in reviving bison species both in the US and in Poland which was at the edge of extinction after 2WW.

Actually almost all the spirits you tried are lower mid - mid tier stuff, except for Belvedere which is a high end, bartender vodka. Majority of the best polish alcohols are made in small batches, and are not widely available in shops.
