What the hell happened to Glycine? A decade ago when I first got into sharing my watch journey on KZbin, I fell in love with the Glycine Combat Sub, a modern reinterpretation of an iconic 1960s Vietnam watch from the legendary Swiss watchmaker Glycine. Fast forward to the present day, and now with multiple sizes including this on-trend 39mm version, why isn't this brand talked about as much? I recently found out that you can buy these watches directly from their website for as little as half off the retail price and under $500. But why are they so cheap? What has changed in the last 10 years? Why have they been largely forgotten? And how do they compare to the larger 42mm previous version I owned? Join me for an unboxing of the Glycine Combat Sub Dive Watch, including a mini review and look at the positives and negatives of this automatic Swiss made watch, and an investigation into the shocking story of murder and horological intrigue, and possibly a glimpse into the future of most Swiss entry level watch brands. But above all, I share why in my opinion, today's watch is not only the best alternative to the Tudor Black Bay 58, but almost all Tudors and Rolex Submariners at this price point. What do you think about this watch and the Glycine brand? Please share in the comments!

If they closed the factory, who is making their watches for them?
@theurbangentry
@theurbangentry 11 сағат бұрын
Great question, I did some digging and I found out. Unfortunately I can not be 100% sure, so it would be disingenuous to include in the video. But many of these types of brands, in fact almost all entry level to mid tier luxury are made in the same several dozen or so factories in Switzerland. To what degree, I can not say as it varies from brand to brand, only they know it and the Swiss authorities who they must report to in order to maintain "Swiss made", but it will be just enough to comply with the 60% rule I discussed in previous videos for them to qualify. This includes designing them in Switzerland and not just production, having their main office/HQ in the country, but of course assembly too. I know this from extensive research and also having designed many "Swiss made" watches myself over the years. VERY few brands, mostly only super super high end or (totally vertically integrated brands like Rolex) and some higher end Swatch group brands for example are close to being entirely actually Swiss made. It's a deep, complicated subject, but at the end of the day, it really does not matter these days. It's all about the quality of the factory and the people that work in them, no matter if it is Geneva or another continent. It's mostly a marketing term now. I've seen prototypes from Asia that rival anything German or Swiss, and vice a verser. It also depends on the type of watch you are designing/producing, but alas, like I said, so many variables. So rule of thumb, a watch should be judged in the metal and on an individual basis ALWAYS, regardless of origin. But on the whole, I would say "German made" tends to be slightly better than Swiss, but again, it depends on the brand/watch/price point always. I hope that helped. Thank you and best regards, TGV

@@theurbangentrythanks for the great video and follow up. It couldn’t have come at a better time, just got my first automatic movement watch as a birthday gift and I’m hooked on horology. This video checks all the boxes for a newcomer to the market and the hobby. You dash the marketing terms, go to company history, and take a wide view of present days. I was looking for a watch that focuses on homage aesthetic , function, and finally accessibility, Glycine is really looking like a sleeper hit with this model.

I own several versions of the Airman (GMT and 24hr Purist), a Combat 6 Field watch, and a Combat Sub 42mm. I remember how well regarded this brand was before the takeover, and despite the Invicta influence I still think they make those three models to a good standard. The fact that you can get them discounted is good. The discounted prices are probably fair ones. The Airman is a forgotten icon with its cool bezel securing mechanism.

As you keenly pointed out, Glycine's horological history should not be overlooked just because it finds itself under its current corporate umbrella. I often considered going for a Combat Sub. The variable colour combinations, matt dials, and slim profile made it very tempting. It's rugged and utilitarian, but the 39mm looks really smart! I had the Glycine Airman Chief 40mm about 5 years back, loved the watch, loved the double crown (As I got it initially because I loved Tom Hardy's double Crown Omega SpitfireWatch in Dunkirk and simply wanted something similar) but due to rotation with other watches in the collection I just didn't wear it, it felt like I had to learn how to tell the time every time I wore it. I gave it to a younger nephew who was starting his own sartoral journey from Chav to Chap and gave what I could to help (now a very well dressed gent in his own right and he still wears it- Yes I regret giving it away every time I see it lol)

Navy blue, matte satin dial, midsize case, retro style. I had the combat sub 42 as a BB alternative. Great watch but sold it cuz it was too big. And I saw the combat sub 39 for the first time and wanted one bad. But at the time, it was sold out and I never thought I'd own a BB58 or a combat sub 39. I never liked the sunburst dial on the combat but the size was perfect. Then I beat cancer so I bought the navy BB58 as my trophy, and now I really don't need the combat.😂 It is a great watch tho!

I can say the same thing with the Invicta pro diver, you can try it out and the amount of options you have is great, and later you can get a glycine which has better specs and a better watch in my own opinion once you can afford it. Part of me likes that glycine is overlooked because there are so many models that each bring a unique taste of the rainbow. Also, I trust Invicta's qc over an Aliexpress brand any day.

Great 17 minutes of knowledge. Thanks. The Combat Sub GMT is also an incredible deal compared to the Black Bay GMT. $380 to $420 if you know where to look.

Absolutely love mine. I bought it back in 2021 a little after they came out. Not long after that I couldn't find them anywhere except for eBay for almost 3 times the amount I paid for mine. Which was a huge bummer because I really wanted to get a second one in a different color scheme. All I have to say is that I am so glad that they decided to bring it out again. Truth be told after I got mine I kept on hoping to see you do a video on them. So this is really cool to finally see this happen. P. S. Only thing I really didn't like was the bracelet. However, this watch is a strap monster and the options are limitless. Easily one of my most worn and favorite watches in my collection and extremely durable as well.

I saw the video while wearing my combat sub 39. I love my Glycine, it's well made, reliable, completely brushed case (I wear it on a rubber strap) and cheap. I love rotating watches, but the Glycine gets the most wristtime as I can wear it without worries.

If you get a chance, you should check out the Certina DS Action Diver 38. The black one has an enamel looking dial and is the “kippers nippers”. It’s so comfortable it disappears on wrist, and looks great.

Love those stubby lugs, looks much better than the Tudor in the side by side shot. It was the same reason I didn't really gel with my Hamilton: very tall lugs. Might be the reason I love my Turtle and Arnie.

I have the vintage version of that watch and If I’m not mistaken it’s the same ETA movement that the Sinn 104 uses. I’ve owned that as well and they wear almost identically.

another great video from you! Glycine is such an underrated and interesting brand that deserves a lot more attention. I have been considering the blue version for a while now but the lack of a triangle around the lume pip really bothers me for some reason. it is between this and a baltic aquascaphe for me, not an easy choice.

As someone who has owned both the Tudor BB and the Glycine, your criticism of the BB isn't misplaced. It is a one-trick pony, making tiny adjustments around the margins and essentially releasing the same watch over and over. Of course, that's a problem with so many of the lazy watch brands, and if they're not doing that, they're just thumbing through their back catalogues and re-releasing old models. BUT I feel this critique is equally valid for the Glycines.

I am a proud owner of a “true” 24h airman 44mm bought 12 years ago. It lost an absurd proportion of its value but I don’t care, it’s such a bad ass watch. Looking at time on a 24h dial changes your perception what you can do in a day !

Such an interesting brand and back story, have followed them for a number of years. Have a 36mm Airman and it’s such a lovely wearing watch. Completely agree with your comments on what holds them back though they have just released the 39mm combat sub in colour ways, with different bezel and handset. Thank you for the video and insight

I was very pleased when I heard about the new sizes however, outside of the no triangle on the bezel it is still missing one thing in my opinion .... The Crown guard! But still one of the greatest values.

When TGV reviewed the Combat Sub GL0403 I was smitten by it, but it was very hard to find, so I settled on the GL0083. But now I think the GL0083 is a much cleaner look, and I really love it. The date at 6 would be an obvious improvement on my watch. This new one, shown in this video, definitely got it right, size, date window, etc. Straps are easy to change.

I love my combat sub 39. Got the one with the radium style lume, mat dial and red date. In some ways that felt as much glycine as it did a subby. I bought it as a go between for and eventual Tudor and after wear I decided that it is a permanent resident.

If you can find one at a reasonable price, look for a GL0384, Glycine Combat Moonphase with Arabic numbers and silver dial. One of my favorites. All the Glycines are underrated, but this one plays with big boys in overall design. Thx for taking the time to give Glycine ther due.

Nice one TGV! Wish the date was at 3 o'clock and possibly wish it had some crown guards - even if it would look too much like the combat sub 42, it would still be the smaller version which still makes it different enough.

Glycine has to be one of the most underrated brands of our time. They're all well made and at the prices they offer them at, the value is absolutely insane. I never want to see this brand go under, let alone any heritage Swiss brand. I think if they pared down their offerings to a few combat subs, a few Airman models, and not much else, it would do them good. It's always nice to have many choices, but I think their product line is too large.

I love my 925 sterling silver Black Bay 58 - I've paired it with the 39mm Rangers oyster t-fit bracelet without the faux rivets (it fits perfectly). The colour difference between the 925 silver and steel isn't that noticeable and its nice having the on the fly adjustment. If you look at the new BB58 GMT there is more of a difference in colour on that case and bracelet and they're both steel!
What if all the world's biggest problems have the same solution?
