As far as I know, Frederique Constant is the only Swiss brand (maybe even worldwide) that offers a mechanical perpetual calendar for under $10,000 (Highlife line). They were also among the first Swiss brands to offer a Swiss made Tourbillon (Progress) for less than a mansion.

I think the problem is branding. The generic French sounding name with zero heritage behind it, plus, the brand is mostly sold at smaller jewelers that don't qualify as ADs for more prestigious brands and at airports. They're in a similar place to Baume & Mercier, I'd say. I have no idea how the brand could improve its image. The watches are actually pretty great for the price.
@matthewdascenzo8622 ай бұрын
This is dead on. The name is generic. The logo is not memorable.

100% agreed. Never liked the name as it suggest decades of brand hertitage that they dont have
@aureate2 ай бұрын
@@pophilioWhile I understand the point, by that logic, I'm left to wonder how anyone can expect true competition to ever enter the market. Are we just left hoping that the finite number of "heritage" brands step up their game when they have no incentive to do so? Seems like a pretty anti-consumer position to cling to.
@matthewdascenzo8622 ай бұрын
Even without a long heritage, FC could improve its market position with more original dial and case designs and by evolving its own design vocabulary.

I am a former FC/Alpina AD in florida and also sold them at a friend's AD in St Croix USVI . They're really well made and I believe good value for dollars spent if you just want a good looking timepiece. The most common comment from watch snobs was they don't make proper gold items which isn't entirely true as they do offer some 18k models at competitive prices. Everyone I sold either of their brands to had only positive comments even years after sale. Not everyone has a Patek budget but at least you get classic style. Years ago I loaned my personal world timer to a ATP chair umpire friend to take to Wimbledon and he said it got lots of positive attention. You need to approach most watch purchases with a value proposition I had similar experience with selling Raymond Weil but I think FC would be a better option

I have an FC Classics Index with black dial and I can honestly say it is one of the few watches in my collection that never gets old. The dial is absolutely stunning with a very 3D feel to it, and the light bounces off it so I can never devide if it has hints of grey or even brown. I think a big acceptance problem comes from a few things. First, they are owned by Citizen, which makes the Swiss made aspect feel somehow confusing. Secondly, I have heard they are a bit random with their placements in airports and malls - they deserve their own area. And finally, since most of their watches are classic dress watch styles, they should really trim down to 38mm. Regardless, I'm happy about all of this, because it means I get a quality watch for a lot less than if they suddenly became the next 'big thing'.

I'm not as knowledgeable as the other guys I see in the comments, but still, here are my 2 cents on FC: I think you nailed it when you used the word corporate and I also totally agree with the point you're making: the potential is there. I'd start with the logo. It should get a refresher: I find that the all-caps font used really flattens any effort in designing a good/exciting dial. They want to keep it within the more classic/dressy tradition? Wonderful: the tourbillon was a fantastic move in that direction. Steer away from mimicking Breguet and others, and FC might just as well find a true and iconic, identity. Hopefully they're watching and listening

Having checked out FC's offerings at Wind Up NYC this year, I would say that you're spot on. Their designs are very classic, traditional, and also very 'safe'. For me, it's difficult to get drawn to their brand because heritage is important to me, and having been founded in the 80's, FC doesn't have a very long history. Additionally, they don't have that one watch that's an iconic, unmistakable hallmark of their brand either, which can often overcome the heritage issue for me. They're absolutely wonderful watches. They're well made, well designed, and good-looking, but I agree, they need something a little more bold.
@mitchaelhollingsworth16982 ай бұрын
If a brand was founded or popularized in the 1980s, i would respect them so much more for going all in on a retro look like the concord mariner. Instead federique constant make classic designs like they've been around since the 1880s. Nomos is also not that old, or formex, but each have a very specific design language that defines the brand.

@popezosimusthethird2692 ай бұрын
Fun fact about their worldtimer : the movement is a rebridged ETA 2824 with a complication module on top, I had one for service not that long ago and some parts just do not lie (keyless work holding plate dial-side, geartrain position and gear height). Meaning other in-house movements of theirs could be as well. That's not trying to be a dig or anything, it's smart engineering : you skip the really costly development of having to build an escapement from scratch, the construction of the balance wheel and escape wheel which require a lot of dedicated machinery, and you focus on what you can best do yourself and that will give a more visible identity and function to your movement.

Okay! The beauty of FC (and, to a certain extent, Seiko/Grand Seiko and JLC, to name but two) is that, for the most part, they *aren't* going heavily flavor -of-the-month with their releases: much of what they introduce now will remain relevant a decade from now and likely beyond. But technically, they're as up-to-date as needs require: perfect for someone who purchases for the long term. FC *might* want to introduce a few models (or variations on existing ones) with a bit more visual verve, but hopefully without tossing out what makes them so damned good to begin with. I'm a fan of FC, and I agree that they are out of the focus of most watch enthusiasts. I think they need more modern case designs. They do this "polished all over" case that just looks like a dress watch. No sportiness at all. Their naming convention is, as you said, very corporate. They also need more metal bracelet choices for all of their watches. Most of their watches are leather strap only. There is so much you can do from bracelet design, and FC lacks this especially on their dressier watches. Also, their dials don't take enough risks or look interesting enough. They all look very "classy" and their watches just give off dress watch vibves. Rarely do I want to wear a true dress watch day-to-day. Finally, I think the lack of applied branding on the dial makes the watch look cheaper. I'd love to see an applied metal "FC" or "Frederique Constant" applied to the dials to add more depth. I hope to see FC push more boundaries with daring designs!

Im not sure that money these days goes along with taste. Lazy buying is why Apple out sell its competitors, The same will apply to the luxury buyer. Those with the money will buy the recognised names as they make an impression rather than buying a watch for its design. For this channel to get to the next level, opinions of watchmakers who repair watches should also be included. I think you can't exactly tell people how great a watch is, without having handled several of them for years, know weaknesses of the movements inside and what problems they are prone to, what their precision rate is over time, how you can finetune them etc. For example, you can say all the great things about FC which I agree with, but watchmakers can tell you that they sometimes have hard time fixing some of their complications. Without talking about these things, the channel remains somewhat superficial, focusing too much on the design of the watches, rather than the movements inside which is how watchmakers actually look at watches, but I think you address that towards the end of the video. I'm keen to see the channel grow though. Onwards and upwards, as you always say.

I could not agree more, in fact I even talked about that in this very video and I have always strived to include watchmaker interviews and feedback in many past videos. I am so glad you agree and I will indeed continue to do so. Onwards and ever upwards! Best regards, TGV

I like FC watches & being under the Citizen umbrella is a bonus.

I love it. It reminds me of the JLC Master UltraThin Moon. I would totally get this for the vibe

I have the Frederique Constant Manufacture Flyback Chronograph (a mouthful), and I'll admit that it takes a lot of inspiration from earlier Pateks. That's fine with me, though. It's a classic look, and FC pulls it off well.

Classy choice, difficult not to love, especially considering the Patek's are insanely costly. You are so right about the name, if only they gave it a special unique bit of individual design to distance it a tiny bit from the PP and a cool name, I would be all over it too. Anyways, what is important is; you enjoy it! Thank you, great comment. Pure class watch. Best regards, TGV

My, this has created a tennis match. But I wonder if we could meet at the net and agree this was a production with values that enaged us for the full 17 mins. It certainly did me.

Perhaps FC needs to do something similar to when Tudor released the Pink Dial Chrono. It was loud and fun and different. It was polarizing but also brought alot of attention to the brand. I'm not saying FC should do a pink dial but definitely something that sparks a little controversy. Maybe it's right, maybe it's wrong but it's as they say, "We're talking about it"

I own the worldtimer high-life. Honestly, it's one of my favorite sports watches in my collection. $3,800 for a piece with those specs is unmatched.

Beautiful watch! I love a great blue moonphase dress watch! I think my only hesitation is not fully understanding the impact of being owned by Citizen (like Bulova), a massive Japanese brand that focuses on cheaper “mall” watches. I’m an enthusiast and not a snob so I don’t mean that in a derogatory sense. I certainly still appreciate all watches, but if I’m going to spend thousands of dollars, I want to know that it’s going to last beyond my lifetime.

Love your glasses! Love fed watches, also!

My limited understanding is that the watch market is dominated by divers/steel sports watches. So a brand that focuses on pure class dress watches won't generate much hype.

I like them, I nearly pulled the trigger a number of times for one of their models, but a more prestigious brand (and in most cases more expensive) at the last second takes my interest.

I’ve been looking to get a moonphase. I love the smaller size and look of the blue dialed Longines Flagship Heritage, but I know that I won’t wear it enough to keep the moon phase in synch and I do not want a automatic watch winder. As much as I prefer mechanical, quartz really is the sensible choice for me. I looked over FC, even the ‘ladies’ options. The ideal moonphase watch for me would be nicely finished stainless steel case at 36-38mm with a sub 46mm lug to lug. I love a blue dial with a prominent moonphase. I’d filing the cash at quartz version of the Longines - especially if it were significantly less expensive. Frédérique Constant needs design that eclipses both Longines’ vintage look and pushes beyond Christopher Ward’s bold minimalist design.

Great video as always TGV! I’ve been close to pulling the trigger on a Slimline FC many times but chose to save for my grail SBGW231 instead. They’re timeless and classy looking watches for sure. Also, who won the bet between you and Mark on which new colour variation sold more/quickest? I fell on the side of the white dial.

I can't believe you said the Cubitus is gorgeous, TGV. I'll never recover from this. 😆
