1659 is basically a Penn & Teller act. While everyone's watching Penn spin coins, Teller is secretly loading widespread cultural change from his pocket.
@KirillTheBeast Жыл бұрын
I see this SCP as the ultimate "shadow government". Sure, the cultural impact they have SEEMS benign, nevermind the fact that they either own or finance the infrastructure and businesses fo which they're cranking up demand by influencing cultural sensitivities. Then you add up the fact that they themselves have addmitted to have an overarching goal (or goals?) to the apparently pointless tasks some of their member carry out and all of a sudden you're reminded of the saying "there's a method to the madness"... THEN you get to the agreement and it all gets hella creepy. It looks like the Foundation is getting a lot more out of it than the Directorate is, but the Directorate clearly shows what they care about: the Foundation doesn't get to know what they want, nor does it get to even try to stop it. Odds are the Directorate knows exactly what and what not to do in order to further their agenda. Not taking up Foundation resources so it stays effective at its job might very well be a part of such agenda. Maybe it's that case... or maybe they just know that if they stick to the terms of the agreement, they'll eventually reach a point at which the Foundation won't be able to stop them even if they tried. Still, an awesome take on the "uncontainable, mass influence Keter" trope.

This is an interesting one, a group that is clearly anomalous, and with effort, probably could avoid detection by the foundation, but they actually got into an agreement with them, one that seems fairly generous for the foundation, considering the nature of Directorate K. Part of me wonders if the directorate sees the foundation as an equal, or as an annoying pest that is easier to work with than work around. I wonder if 1659 and the foundation ever work together on a common goal.
@iamzid2 жыл бұрын
i suppose that 1659 understands the thorn that the foundation could be. by entering into an agreement with the foundation, 1659 is pacifying the foundation and creating some level of protection against inquiries into its source. i think that it's understood by both sides that if the foundation could lock away 1659, it would.
@nom67582 жыл бұрын
@@iamzid also think about it this way, the foundations goal is never to kill or destroy an SCP. 1659 has to be completely aware they are classified as an SCP and understand that implication, so they know worst case as long as they dont try to destroy the world the SCP foundation wont try to kill them. I find the agreement between the organizations similar to two members of an oligarchy, aware of some capability each other presents, and the non-destructive intent each other has, and therefore decided it would be easier to just rule their own districts of the world as they see fit while keeping track of one another. Its not like their authority undermines the Foundation anyway, plus it costs no money to make treaties.
@theoverseer3932 жыл бұрын
Or they work behind the backs of the foundation, if the foundation is incapable of realizing how deep the control goes
@garrettlawson64502 жыл бұрын
Strictly speaking, the SCP foundation is extraordinary powerful, all world governments bend the knee to them and they have access to the most destructive "technology" humanity has ever discovered (either the use of other SCPs or technology created by the study of other SCPs) and while the SCP foundation has always been concerned with containing SCPs they have not hesitated to destroy them in the past provided it was practical to do so. The foundation also has a history of dealing with powerful groups that wield anomalous "firepower" All these factors collectively would mean squaring off with the foundation would not be ideal, especially if your intended goal is another other than destruction and strife. In short, for directorate K, it's more practical to cooperate with the foundation than it is to attempt to fight, given that both sides are interested in human longevity the peaceful compromise seems logical.
@inkedseahear2 жыл бұрын
I think that the whole SCP is, in its nature, anomalously unfunctional. With the document suggesting they have no goals and affected personnel doing basically nonsensical task. So really it's basically shared self-sustaining, mass delusion that doesn't have a beef or conflict of interest with the Foundation because it really doesn't have a interest in anything. Hence why the agreements are so heavily favorable for the Foundation.

I appreciated the spooky backing track, but Directorate K sounds more silly than scary. They're a clandestine group of people spanning the globe who... Have absolutely no idea why they're doing what they're doing, other than that they're part of a super special secret group. It's very Night Vale

Some interesting concessions have been made for SC0-1659 Allowed to control up to 0.01% of the current human population, since we just surpassed 8 billion people, that means 1659 has an allowed size of roughly 800,000 people or more than double it's currently known size. 1659 is basically free to do as it wishes short of large scale property damage and loss of life, they have been granted the ability to defend themselves but the foundation has allowed themselves to interfere in order to prevent further escalation.

I get the feeling the goal is similar to speedrunners doing weird shit to make an event happen through data manipulation. The kinda thing you always wonder how it was discovered

I feel like we should leak a modified version of this to the Q-anon people and see what happens.

Performing pointless tasks that have nothing to do with your stated purpose to further unknown and potentially sinister ends is just called being a middle manager.

Seems like depending on how the last triannual summit went, SCP-1659 may often be the main source of D-class subjects.
