At first, the idea of a bird maintaining a loving relationship may sound like something that you could only see in a Disney movie, but that's because you haven't met the waved albatross. These incredible creatures have one of the sweetest stories of any animal, as they are monogamous, and once a couple pairs up, they will stay together faithfully for the rest of their lives. Far from just a social gesture, this strategy is actually the secret to their survival, because the albatrosses have a lot of crazy challenges to overcome when it comes to creating the next generation - as they only lay one egg per year and only breed on one remote island in the entire world. This strategy comes with a ton of risks, but the ways that they overcome them are surprisingly human, and far more relatable than you think. Get ready, because this is one real life love story you will not want to miss!
As always, we want to extend a huge thank you to Emilio from ‪@AnimalEncountersEP‬ for helping us realize our lifelong dream of visiting the Galápagos Islands and finding these iconic and absolutely adorable animals. His knowledge and experience were invaluable, and without the incredible albatross footage he has captured, this video would simply not have been possible. Also, a big shoutout to Jack and Gage ‪@JacksWorldofWildlife‬ for joining us on this trip of a lifetime!

Gotta say I have a newfound respect for the Albatross. Knew some of these facts, but learned a lot as usual from TWBs. Another interesting segment from the Galápagos Islands. What a unique ecosystem.

I never imagined that long like fisheries could be such a significant mortality source for a bird, I always just heard about shark mortality with long lines before this. Great video, what an amazing experience to be some of the few humans to be able to visit their breeding area!

It surprised us too when we were researching this episode, I knew that humans and overfishing specifically have a big impact on the albatrosses but I didn’t think one source would account for so much of the mortality. Thank you so much for watching Ben, this was a fun one to put together!

I am the oldest of five kids with four different fathers so yes I can concur that monogamy is the best way to go when it comes to raising children especially in these days trust is very important even for humans I know it's becoming less so today but we need to be there for each other

매우 감사합니다! The albatrosses are definitely sensitive while they’re incubating, but that’s why it’s a good there are so few predators on the island! Thank you for watching!

The waved albatross is very aptly named, I can see why because of the grey waved pattern on the belly and neck.
