Mental Health Disorders: Unseen epidemic | Episode 6: Part 2 | Sawal Sehat Ka

In the sixth episode of our series on health ‘Sawal Sehat Ka’, we bring to you an issue that doesn’t attract much attention but is affecting large swathes of population in an unseen manner - mental health. According to a World Health Organisation report, an estimated seven crore people suffer from various mental disorders in India, which go unrecognised and undiagnosed, but impact lives of people in many different ways. In the second part of the episode The Wire’s senior editor Arfa Khanum Sherwani interviewed Gaurav Bansal on how faith-based healers are misleading people away from science and medicine when it comes to seeking mental health care. The patients, thus, end up being looted of time and money, and worst, getting their disorders aggravated.
In the first part, we spoke to various experts to understand the landscape of mental health problems in India, and how stigma, which comes from various sections of society, becomes a major hindrance for seeking care.

As a sociologist, I would request you to give a deep thought and reading to understand religion as a social institution. To write-off religion as unscientific or blind-faith is easy but not correct. People having so much faith in religion is not simply a matter of blind faith. There are many religious shrines which provide relief without really exploiting them as brutally as some godmen do. The guest whom you have invited does explain how the infrastructure is not sufficient to deal with the epidemic of mental illness. But the facilities that exist are also very insensitive towards the mentally ill people, especially towards those who come from the poor and marginalized sections. In psychiatry or modern medicine, the emphasis has always been only on medication and it does not really treat the mental illness in its social, economic and cultural totality. For instance, they just insist on giving medicines. Why should the mentally ill person, either the poor or the affluent, go to such a medical facility? I have not even discussed the issues of affordability, availability and accessibility of psychiatric treatment to a large population. While I congratulate you for taking up this important issue I feel the issue should not be simplistically seen as an issue of superstition vs science.
