Garm, aka Kristoffer Rygg. I could listen to him sing all day. I'm a massive Ulver fan. And of course, he was the original singer of Borknagar for the first two full albums.

This was beautiful. The music was awe inspiring and the vocals were good. I liked the theme of the song (looked up the lyrics). Though, it always makes me a little sad that winter is so often portrayed as dismal. I love winter. To me, it is the time when Mother Nature rests and leaves the world to the stark beauty of the cold and the snow.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I've been trying to get people to react to this so long. I knew you'd love it if Septicflesh and Wintersun are to your liking :) For 18 years I considered Nightfall in Middle-Earth by Blind Guardian to be the best album ever made. That was until I heard Winter Thrice. It's such a perfect album. I love how epic it is, at times so serene and beautiful yet so harsh and brutal at others. I guess it's a perfect depiction of the nature and winter at the True North (the name of their next album after this one :) ) A few facts about the vocalists: First up, Lars "Lazare" Nedland. Keyboardist and vocalist in Borknagar. Also has another "avant-garde black metal" band Solefald. The second one, with blond hair, is Simen "ICS Vortex" Hestnæs. He was the bassist/vocalist of Dimmu Borgir and also sings in Arcturus. The third one, with the cap, is Kristoffer "Garm" Rygg. He used to sing in Borknagar and Arcturus (A coincidence Vortex is now the singer of both? :D ). He left the band around 1997 but is a guest vocalist on this track. His own main band is Ulver. One of the originators of Norwegian Black metal. Their early works are considered among the best releases of the genre and have a really unique atmosphere. Somewhere around 2000 they switched completely to electronic music. Garm has been a guest singer with many bands and has also produced a lot of music. The one doing harsh vocals is Andreas "Vintersorg" Hedlund. Unfortunately not with Borknagar anymore. A swedish musician and has his own band Vintersorg. Very good folk black metal. I recommend checking out the album "Till Fjälls Del II" And on guitar the only one, apart from the drummer, who doesn't sing is the mastermind behind the whole band, Øystein Brun. He's the founder and the only original member of the band. He writes pretty much all the music. Kinda like Tuomas in Nightwish :D

Yeah, I love Borknagar and I want more reactions for them, specially some songs from their four first albums (Borknagar 1996, The Olden Domain, Archaic Course and Quintessence) when the band was more black Metal.

ICS Vortex and Garm, two of my favourite vocalists. This song is epic! Vortex was in Dimmu Borgir as bass / clean vocals and after he was kicked out, he released one album by his name. He's now in Arcturus. Garm (dude w/black beard) was in Arcturus before Vortex, but at some point focused fully in his other band Ulver. And boy have they come a long and variable career. From black metal to some what noeclassical to their present, which you might can call an alternative electronic music. But damn they are good. Listen "Nemoralia", "So Falls The World", "One Last Dance" etc.... from Garm era Arcturus I could recommend "Painting My Horror", "The Chaos Path", "The Throne Of Tragedy" (from "La Masquerade Infernale" album versions) Enjoy! ❤

I so totally concur with this comment! It was Ulver, Dimmu Borgir and Arcturus that led me to Borknagar waaay back in the early 2000's. So many great rabbit holes to dive down 😉

I got to Borknagar first listening to this song, just a few weeks ago. I freaking love it. 🖤 Kind of reminds me a bit of Opeth's Damnation. I'm in love with the whole Winter Thrice album. Btw, about your reaction, I saw you completely thrilled with Moon. Much more compared to this. Urd and Fall (where Moon track comes from) are also amazing albums. I see you have reacted to other Borknagar tracks. Gonna watch them! So glad I get here. 🤘

Another fine band to add to the list! I first heard these guys when the True North album came out, I must've watched the Up North video 20 times in a row 😂. As for the Winter aspect of this and several other songs, we don't get winters like that here , not sure I'd survive.🤘 🥶🤘

This song is quite special, as it showcases the 4 vocalists who have been part of Borknagar over the years. The bearded one is Garm, the band's first vocalist. The one with long, blonde hair and an angelic voice is Vortex, their second vocalist after Garm's departure. The one doing the growls is Vintersorg, the third vocalist who stayed the longest. The one with short hair is Lazare, the second vocalist and keyboardist who joined in 2000, replacing Ivar Bjorson (from Enslaved).

Borknagar has been on my list for years to explore more, they really seem to be masters of the atmospheric black + progressive metal stuff. Try out "Ruins of Future" or "Rivalry of Phantoms" for something a bit more raw in production, or "Epochalypse" for something more like this one :) Those are the only 3 songs I know from them lol
