This song is based on "Song of Myself" from "Leaves of Grass" by Walt Whitman. The original was on the Imaginarium album and was the 2nd album released while Anette Olzon was with the band. The original was probably 14 minutes long, as after the singing was all done, there were symphonic metal orchestrations and "narrations".

One of my favorites....but an extremely dark song, dark lyrics. The extended version is beautiful, with spoken words, poems, by some bandmembers, parents of Tuomas and his wife. RAW!!

This is probably my favorite Nightwish song. The combination of Floor and Marco's voices. The combination of double kick and the choir. The breakdown. And not weird you hear Metallica in the second half. Tuomas has always been a huge fan of them.

@ the wolf hunters , tuomas wrote Song of my self while recovering from his depressive phase over the dark passion play era. The song ist heavily inspired by Walt Whitman’s poem with the same title, Tuomas often often calls Whitman “my hero uncle Walt” like robin Williams in the “dead poets society “. I posted an alternate video to song of my self under the poet and the pendulum reaction, it is the album version wich contains letters and diarys entry from tuomas and his friends while he recovered and read by some of his friends including a then session musician for Nightwish called troy donockly

I got the Wacken 2013 DVD a while back, have watched it several times and I have not been able to see any moshing at all during the whole concert. Lots of crowd surfing though, all the time. The best explanation I've heard is that the crowd surfers are offerings brought forward to the band. Btw, the documentary "Please Learn The Set List In 48 Hours" comes as a bonus DVD with the Wacken 2013 DVD. You can find that documentary on YT but it's a bit grainy and hard to see the subtitles. Much easier to read the text if you have it on DVD. Cheers / B.
