I agree with most of this, but nah, you're wild for dumping on Frontiers as nothing more than "BotW but Sonic". All the stuff you're talking about with sega actually acknowledging and respecting the deep lore of the franchise started with Frontiers, not Shadow Generations. Obviously Frontiers borrowed concepts from BotW, it would be stupid to deny that, but you can take inspiration from something without just blatantly copying it with no effort put in.

This is fair! I actually quite enjoy Frontiers but I'll stay firm that I think it borrows too much from BOTW especially from a visual and sound perspective. But it certainly planted a lot of seeds for what we're seeing now, like the Final Horizon.

I would love to see an Ifrit boss and nega Mother Wisp bosses in Sonic x Shadow generations. Both are connected to lore that sega refuses to use. Ifrit (sonic rivals 2) can destroy an intirer dimension bathing it in fire (the game comfirms its whole universe, not just a planet). Sonic and Shadow only defeat a heavily weakened ifrit as it isn't fully revived yet (it did eat a bunch of chao and become invincible, though. Plus, he has mind control powers and is just as sentient as chaos even though it wasn't at full power). But they still beat it in base, which is still incredibly impressive. I bring him up because Gerald has notes on ifrit implying Gerald Robotnik somehow got into the dimension that chaosic inferno takes place in. Plus, ifrit seems connected to the chao somehow, and Gerald knows of him, so i hope he is at least in the journal. As for the nega mother wisp, I loved her boss fight. She is a part of the wisps lore (yes, the wisps have lore actually lore, such as the mother wisp creating the wisps and the planets that eggman captured, the ds version of colors going into detail on how negative wisps are made and how it affects their minds, actually giving each wisps their own personalities like Lazer trying to fight the robots and void straight up destroying shit and causing chaos. The mother wisp is kind and motherly but can have a temper. eggman is lucky he got caught in the black hole before she got free. Plus, the wisps actually flow with level design in colors wii and ds. Similar to how the doom powers seem to. Unlike in the lost world or forces. The ds has a better story than the wii version. It has interesting lore, the wisps are fun and the stages are fun. Not to mention, multiple characters have sonic do missions to help free wisps or extra information on what is going on. I have both versions. The wisps are neat and do have lore. I wish sega would actually utilize their lore more). Ifrit and the mother wisp are very interesting and think you should cover them. Plus, the fact that Sonic and Shadow, among other characters, defeated Ifrit in base shows how powerful they are. Also, I think marine the raccoon should return due to her unexplained power, and the complaints about her are already addressed in her character arc and development from sonic rush adventure. Also, phantom king creates the egg revery, which is infinite in space-time, and space and time (yes, there is a difference) in Sonic Mania, and that's just classic super sonic. Also, Chaos drives, artificial chaos, the ark, and G.U.N. are all interesting. I wish sega would use them more, too. Oh, and Emerl and Gemerl should be explored a bit again. Sonic rush, rush adventure, rivals 2, the advance games, sonic battle, and Sonic colors ds deserve more attention. Oh, and sega sonic the hedgehog arcade is awesome. oh, and Sage definitely should return as she is a neat character with cool lore. And the dark arms and black doom are neat lore wise. Note mention sega not using the wisps personalities and sometimes going against said personalities (Viod and probably lazy likely wouldn't like being shoved in wispons. Not to mention, void usually doesn't trust random people unless they are people they think are safe, which isn't going to be random people. Meaning it is a miracle the resistance weren't losing people to angry viod wisps. Oh, and the jewel Scepter was cool. There is a lot of lore they should bring back.

I think here and there it's perfectly fine to adhere to the latest hotness a little, but only if you build your IP or brand AROUND it and not IN it, if that makes sense. Like if the beat' 'em up mechanics is centered around the identity of Sonic (or Sonic characters) and not shoehorned randomly, it would work well. Frontiers kinda answered that from Unleashed, despite Unleashed actually having very in-depth combat when you look at the moveset list. The prime issue with most of the games post-Heroes was pretty much that trend chasing issue. It's always centered around them making something around the trend, and not around the IP first. The only reason why Frontiers was so successful in this regard is because it actually worked and turned out to be very fun and a great idea for someone as fast as Sonic. Running around a big area and messing around with stuff to your liking. I think that defines 3D era Sonic pretty well despite everything. Shadow Generations is seemingly answering that with not just open-zone White Space, but also adhering to how 3D stages used to be. That, combined with the Movie series being so good, is a great mix that is propelling Sonic into a very good future.

I disagree with unleashed having an in depth cmbat system having a combo list doesn't make a game have an in depth combat system, the combos all blend together and enemies do nothing to make you utilise different moves, add that to the fact that the game uses dial combos and lacks styles or weapons only exuberate the issues with the combat, and ultimately all this make the game feel monotonous and repetitive.

I think that the updates that made sonic frontiers atracting more people for becoming more sonic also helped. Imagine having almost 20 years of bad games and then the devs said "let me cook" and they did let them cook, AND IT WORKED. That's where i think they had their change of heart.

The reason why sonic stories were hated by critics is that these critics are made to review plataformers, so they aren't professionaly trained to critique stories so a simple story to them can be super convoluted and complex

It worked in those games because they were stylized. Everything was realistic looking but exaggerated. That's why it looks good in those games. In frontiers they took the full realism approach which didn't look as good

Your right, that's why the movies work well in live action BUT Frontiers isn't stylized and for the open world-like game they're going for looking like the rest of the open world games isn't doing it any favors. 06 is the best case for your argument but even still had more interesting set pieces that were Fantasy, not Windows 98 backgrounds.

In my opinion, Sonic Frontiers is actually an important and best game ever made for the lore of the sonic series franchise, because they answered one of the mysteries we've never solved before, like: the origins of chao, where the chaos emeralds come from, etc. And also has the best character arcs for sonic and other characters (with the help of final horizons dlc). It maybe has some flaws like the background, camera, gameplay, etc. But it also has some the best OSTs and boss fights which are pretty unique and actually the first time to use Super Sonic the effective way possible. The peak actually happened again because of sonic frontiers' story, OSTs, boss fights, arcs, etc.

We should all also mention how full of life, balanced and pretty SA2 designs look in comparison to current soulless empty Sonic characters' designs nowadays. If they gonna redo the approach to creating stories and level designs, they also should competely rework characters' designs. Ideally they should reach towards movie designs because it's the best those characters ever looked since their very creation. Sonic movie designs are pure perfection! I'm not even joking. They couldnt look better. If they can't handle those desings - at least they should use designs similar to SA2 ones.

Bringing up the movie franchise definitely is a good example as to how to do things right and it moved Sonic slowly in to the right direction again. As much as you said Frontiers was like a Breath of the Wild clone (which is true), in terms of its writing… it feels like it’s going in the right direction. Sega let Ian Flynn up the stakes and pushed Sonic to the point where he’d possibly sacrifice himself to save his friends. Sonic, while still copying someone else in gameplay, was starting to reclaim that essence of edginess and freedom with Frontiers regardless. If Frontiers didn’t happen, it’s possible that the movie franchise alone would have been the wake up call for Sega to embrace Sonic’s history and lore past the nostalgia… but honestly, I think Sega seeing people praising Sonic’s characterization in Frontiers combined with Sonic 2 starting to unapologetically throw more Sonic elements into the movie universe and both succeeding with fans has helped Sega see that people care about Sonic, not just as a franchise but as a character and as the embodiment of freedom Sega makes him out to be. I do agree with all the points you said, but I do consider it a disservice to not point out Frontier’s role in Sonic’s reestablishing his identity
