I hate that the reason deep faking Tom Cruise works so well is because Tom Cruise, himself, is already uncanny and unbelievable.

my theory.. well my theory is that time cruise is technically real but not a human. oh no no. you see mankind evolved from something similar to an ape, but tom. he is a different story. he evolved from a sentient breed of cruise ships who escaped from the cruise ship uprising of 1962. the same year he was born. my theory.. his parents, some breed of shape shifting cruise ships bred during the great escape from the american cruise defense otherwise known as the ACD. now you may be asking what about his parents Thomas and Mary??? simple. he was sent off in a megamind like fashion to save the world and or start another uprising to take back their well deserved land. but instead he became what he is today. so therefore he is real. but nowhere near human.. this may be the last time you hear from me, as the government has me under a watchful eye. just know before i am taken that we have a chance... god bless.. save yourselves from the uprising while you can

Stuff like that is already being made of random women/girls/kids. 24 women and 1 underage girl came out in the national news yesterday, in Denmark. Explaining how they've been violated, with their instagram/facebook images taken into a deepfake prn generator and that imagery has been shared widely online already. Famous people at least have the financial capacity to stop it somehow. Regular women, girls and kids don't! This stuff is destroying lives; I couldn't care less about a deepfake joke about Obama or Trump. But when it actively violates people like this, it's just scary and disgusting.

@@WasatchWind I'm not sure about that. Though much of the current research in ML is focused on efficient learning from minimal data, information theoretic limits still apply; you cannot produce information out of nothing (think the fictional "enhance" of crime procedurals). Most deep models use outside data to fill in that gap with a conditional best-estimate. But when the outcome space is intractably large, like permutations of human images, exogenous training data is often not enough and problem specific data (images your target) is required.

@jinmushui1soul

@@mlk0-0 Yeah, a GAN (generative adversarial network) solves a different kind of problem. In short, it constructs a distribution over believable faces and samples from that distribution. Training that model took hundreds of thousands to even billions of high-quality photos, and extra information is added via random vectors added/concatenated in the encoding space (assuming some kind of autoencoder type architecture, haven't bothered to read the specific paper cited on that site). Don't get me wrong, GANs are an important advancement in ML, but when you know what's under the hood, especially the amount of data they require to train, it's not all that unbelievable. In some ways, the real advancements have been in the hardware that allows such models to be learned in a reasonable amount of time.

Unless I’m misunderstanding (I don’t know, I don’t use Snapchat or Instagram) I don’t think those would exactly count. Certainly they make you look different, but they don’t make you look like someone else (again, I’m assuming). Programs that make you look like you’re wearing makeup, gives you animal features, or distorts your face to look weird don’t really feel like the same category, and I don’t think they’d even be called deepfakes. Certainly it’s along the same lines, and shows what we might be able to do with similar technology, but it would seem kind of out of place and not worth mentioning if it was in this video, in my opinion. It’s a good example, but Snapchat/Instagram filters aren’t going to make anyone think you’re a different specific person.

My favorite deepfakes are the ones that Ollie made for Josh for his Christmas gift! It always cracks me up watching them again especially Josh’s face on the Dior model😭

I was going to comment about the news story of the PA women as it happened at the same place my sister to cheers but I'm glad you found it. Cheer moms scare me lol.

I'm bad at recognizing people, too. So both the original and the deepfake look like the same guy to me. Hell yeahhh partial face blindness

As an AI engineer, I can say that deep fakes are getting better every single year. However, AI algorithms for detecting deep fakes are also getting better. The way current deep fake algorithms place faces on frames are not like regular photoshop edits, so AI algorithms can learn to detect the way deep fakes do changes and exploit that to detect them
