I was actually approached by the Judge Joe Brown show 18 years ago to invite me on their show because of a small claims court case I was in. The other party declined to be on the show so we didn’t go but I found out how they get people on these shows. At least for that show they told me that both parties ended up getting what they were suing each other for and the show was just for them to prove who is “right”. They all get flown out to the city where the show is filmed and put up in a nice hotel there for a week. As a condition you had to cancel your case in small claims court to be on the show. So it’s free money and a week of vacation to embarrass yourself on TV.

I would have declined as well, because my one small claims court case was put into motion because I wanted to punish the other party and hopefully change their behavior in the future; I didn't care if I was reimbursed. It would be counterproductive if they ended up getting paid and a vacation out of it.

Arbitration! Harvey's ruling is 100% legal and fully counts. These people essentially sign away their right to appear before an actual court of law and agree to allow "Judge" Harvey to decide the fate of their dispute. All court shows work like this!

@@mycenaeangal9312 Arbitration is basically a contract agreement that you'll settle an argument out of court. In many jurisdictions, as long as all parties to the contract agree with the arbitrator chosen, it doesn't matter if they're wildly incompetent. For the most part, anyway. If both people sign an agreement to arbitrate before Steve Harvey, a court can take Steve Harvey's recommendation and issue a judgment. I mean, provided there's an actual claim, at least. Believe it or not, the arbitrator making actual mistakes about the law isn't enough to void an arbitration decision a lot of the time, just as long as he wasn't biased.

My uncle is an extra in LA, always looking for work acting. He was on a court tv show in the early aughts, can't remember which one. He was the plaintiff and was suing a hypnotist for hypnotizing him at a party and making him pee his pants, thus embarrassing him. Of course everything was made up and he was just getting a paycheck.

No legal loophole, it is just binding arbitration with Steve Harvey as the arbitrator. You sign a contract binding yourself to the decision and agreeing to not pursue the issue further. It generally works out in your favor, though, since all "damages" are generally paid by the show itself and everyone gets a small paid vacation as well as a little bit of money for appearing.

When I was 18 I worked (via a temp agency) as a paid audience member of the Judge Mathis Show, which filmed in Greektown in Chicago. They'd tape about a dozen episodes in a day. my mom once got invited to be on a tv court show (I won’t say which). she had filed a small claims case against a neighbor after their dog attacked ours and they refused to pay the vet bills. nobody had applied for her or anything they just went through public cases and I guess hers caught their eye. she didn’t want to do it so I’m not sure what the actual process of casting these people past the invitation is but I know for the show my mom got offered it seemed like they wanted to just bring her straight in, give her a $500 appearance rate, and start production. some of these are definitely actors but I do believe a decent amount are real people simply because of my mom.

@@nullskey8370 oh yeah there’s definitely shows and cases they have to test first and there’s definitely a few hired actors, but for my mom’s case the letter they sent made it clear they just wanted to put her straight on the show. I’m sure if they hadn’t liked her they would’ve cut her segment. not entirely the same but I’ve done a late night show segment before and for that they brought in and filmed more people than were needed and cut out who they didn’t need or didn’t work so I’m assuming with my mom’s case it would’ve been the same situation for this show if they didn’t like her but again all these shows work in their own way

Judge shows are just televised arbitration. They sign papers agreeing to abide by the "verdict" on the show. If people don't actually follow through on them they would need to go to actual court.

To my knowledge you don’t need an actual judge for these shows. It’s an adjudication process and you just need an unbiased third party. Not sure if that’s the correct word 😅

How it’s done on judge Judy (when it’s not totally made up) is they give the people who come on the show money for their appearance and they basically drop the actual real lawsuit and just accept money for coming on instead.

AFAIK, these shows basically have both parties drop their claims in favor of arbitration, with Harvey being the arbiter. There's a pot of money to be split between the litigants, and if one person wins the case, their money is drawn from the money the other party would have received. The money doesn't actually come from the personal funds of the loser.

The show is an arbitration process. Its when both parties agree to legally agree to abide by the decision of a third party. Basically if all parties agree before hand to treat it like a trial then legally its treated like trial. Its kinda like a settlement but decided by a third party instead of the parties themselves.
