Here in the states we call it eminent domain when they take away your property for public improvements like roads. It’s never good.

Love these old places you show. Such character. The photos showing it done up were so cozy. So sad 😢 One thing i enjoy is hearing all the amazing birds singing away in the background. So cheery! Just watched one the other day that had an orange 🍊 & lemon 🍋 tree with big old fat fruit. I'm sorry, but since they'd be demolished, I think it'd be perfectly okay to big a big ole bag full to take home. A shame to waste! Thanx for giving me a glimpse into Australia's old homes. What a beautiful home, someone's dream home for sure. I live south of Adelaide, so the chances of me using the South Road upgrade at some point is 100%. I feel bad for everyone who has had to give up their homes for it. I can only imagine how they felt getting the letter from the government that they have to move out, and then a couple years from now driving on South Rd themselves near where their home used to be. You can only hope the government compensated them well. Thanks so much Paul for documenting these places before they're gone for good. Love your videos.

Another well presented documentary, Paul!!👍 I'm not going to get political, here. Politics & politicians bore me witless👎. But the dreams & aspirations of the family who owned this magnificent place... gone with the stroke of a pen. It angers me to think that a bit more than 30 years ago, Adelaide had a north-south corridor of land set aside specifically for future freeway developments (the MATS Plan). However, the short-sighted, cash strapped Government at that time sold the lot off for quick financial gain...🤬🤬🤬

Why demolish these beautiful old houses when they are putting an underground tunnel through. South Australia & developers seem on hell bent in destroying beautiful old homes that the next generations can enjoy😢. In Perth when they sunk the train lines & installing the electrification for the electric trains to the northern & eastern suburbs they put in underground tunnels & they didn’t demolish any of the buildings especially people who lived in beautiful century old suburban homes that live closer to the city & it was very successful. Thank you Paul for sharing, love you house exploring videos.

The moving finger writes, and having writ... moves on... Now thats interesting. 1925, pre wall st crash... Does the name Charleston represent a celebration of the good times roaring twenties boom... Or did the owner come from Charleston in the Adelaide Hills???🤔 Anyway, this wouldve been 100 yrs old next year !!! A Bradman shortfall. (99.4 Av) This is just a perfect gem with so many original fittings etc. Just beautiful... But why would they put the wooden kitchen bench upside down on the ceiling???🤔😁😂

What a beautiful home! I’m shocked they aren’t saving anything especially all the beautiful details. I love the privacy and the tall fences my goodness this house is beautiful all the stained glass windows even on the doors! Why not move the house? I’m shocked all these beautiful houses being torn down. I guess I’m old fashioned. I miss the attention to detail in every house back then and it wasn’t just for the wealthy everyone could have nice stuff . Everyday my depression is getting worse and worse and I don’t even recognize myself anymore I broke down crying today I don’t like this me at all. Thank you for your videos urbex indigo I can see the world through your eyes even just for 24:29 it helps me. Do people ever move houses to new locations in Australia? It happens in the United States. I don’t know how often, but I’ve seen people do it. I think if I had the money I would have bought land and moved this house. It’s a pretty house and well loved.
@urbexindigo51642 ай бұрын
Easily done with timber homes but not brick homes. My grandfather and uncles used to move homes and buildings but they were all timber. Its done in rural areas more but one home in the lot of these ones lost to the tunnel was moved but when you see how it was designed I think they knew and designed it like a large shipping container in which it could pretty much be picked up and put on the back of a truck 👍😊

I hope they weren't underpaid it's worth as you suggested might have happened. Money doesn't compensate everything though. More light hearted I wonder who else remembers the 1976 psychic prediction of a tidal wave that was supposed to destroy Adelaide. Some people truly believed and sold their homes for a song. Most made fun of it and did things like walk down main streets with their surfboard under arm on the day it never occured.

What is happening is called Eminent domain here in the US (also known as land acquisition, compulsory purchase) it is the power to take private property for public use. On the one hand it sucks but on the other it if used properly is for the greater good of the citizens. It happened to me two years ago, the state took 15 meters by 400 meters of my 12 acre property along a small two lane road to widen it to make a 4 lane road because of the increase in traffic. When I bought my 12 acres 25 years ago it was in the rural country outside of a large city. Eventually the city swallowed and encircled my land making me the largest land owner in the area. They took part of my land to widen the road and increased my property taxes by 600%. My taxes went from $650 a year to $20,000 a year and I could no longer afford to own it. The city taxed me out of my land which forced me to sell it last year, but the state paid me twice the amount for the land they took thru eminent domain, so there is that.
@urbexindigo51642 ай бұрын
Hi Mike 🙂 wow that sounds bitter sweet for you mate, and I guess you'd rather be there still without the taxes and encroaching urban sprawl. Yep it's call compulsory acquisition here in Australia too. Thanks for sharing your experience and for watching 👍😁

That place is or was a beauty! Such a shame. If there is any conciliation, I've been doing paving in recent times and red bricks cost $2 each or $80sqm. So someone will make some cash and the bricks will live on. Sadly on the ground as pavers and not as beautiful house like this one.
