For the record, the animated series isn't looked upon as "whatever". Many people consider it the best Ghostbusters related piece of entertainment. I personally find it comparable to the first movie.

BTW, Harold Ramis was about to start filming Ghostbusters 3 with Ivan Reitman and OG cast before he got sick and died in 2014. So he would've been in another and his family felt and approved his likeness to be in GB Afterlife. There's a ton of heart in this film, it is NOT a cash grab. Also, Jason said this was not Ghostbusters 3, hence the name for this tribute/bridge film.

The original Ghostbusters killed it because it was a horror movie that didn't know it was a comedy. Ghostbusters II was a horror movie that did know it was a comedy, so it was good enough in its own right but couldn't hold up to the original. Ghostbusters 2016 failed because it wanted to be a comedy and didn't do it well. Afterlife wants to be a drama and does that on its own, but has a hard time standing on the shoulders of the first two.

I had some complaints, but thought it was overall pretty decent, and basically had the feel of a Ghostbusters film (using the original score definitely helped). But some of the issues I have are: Gatekeeper and Keymaster aspects felt rushed. As they mentioned in this review, no way the RC car trap could last that long, and no way anyone could control it that well (I think it would have actually been better if it was explained to have some AI driving element, or even if it was fully autonomous). I think I remember correctly that Trevor failed his driving test three times - so how the hell could he drive Ecto-1 (a massively heavy car that doesn’t handle all that well) as well as he did? Phoebe didn’t believe in ghosts, but then just seems to accept them existing without much issue. They were rather reckless using the proton pack in town - they could have killed someone. When Phoebe was practicing, Podcast was standing right next to her - no way someone would be that close to something like that with a person who is new to using it. Also, how was Egon’s ghost the only one not sucked in with all the other ghosts by the massive array of traps? Edit: Almost forgot -- how did the other Ghostbusters not trust Egon when he said he believed Gozer was coming back? I'm not saying that it was absolutely impossible for that to happen, but they didn't do a great job of really making it plausible in their explanation. Also, how is it that the younger generation doesn't really know about the ghosts that invaded NYC? That makes no sense. The explanation that they were not born when it happened is just not a good enough excuse at all. Tons of people were not born during world War II, but they know enough about it and understand the impact. We're talking about frickin ghosts that showed up in a major world city...twice! I think at least some of these things come down to slightly lazy script writing that could have been addressed/explained.
@Thegreatequalizer2 жыл бұрын
The original Ghostbusters worked so well because it was at its basis a fairly MUNDANE story (even the "world" of Ghostbusters just accepted ghosts existing with basically a shrug of "ok"), about a few guys who are all quite different but share an interest, trying to start a business together (each for their own reasons). And then the fact that the Business is Capturing Ghosts is the "Fish out of water" twist, that provides the backdrop for all sorts of wackiness, and inter-character development, but the "GHOSTS" never feel much like a direct villain or opponent but rather just a "Job problem" for them to overcome by working together. This Modern version just felt like it was trying so hard to shove in your face all these "Fan" references, and feel "REAL" by being melodramatic and "high stakes" at every opportunity, but in the end it just ends up feeling entirely like Nostalgia bait.

As someone who hasn't seen stranger things, I didn't get most of the comparisons in this review. However I was born prior to the original movie. I've watched the originals maybe 10 to 15 times over the years, and I did watch the animated show as a kid, so not really a hardcore fan, but very much aware of the style and feel of the show. I can assure you that this movie rocked, probably a solid 8 or 9 out of 10 for me.

Never having watched Ghostbusters is a crime. Plain and simple. If you wanna have a movie podcast there are requirements, like Jaws, Back to the Future, Rocky, The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, ... basic stuff! Ghostbusters is one of those. Something sucky about the sequel to one of the bigger 80s classics, Ghostbusters, feeling like an imitation of a TV show that's all about "hey, remember the 80s?" instead of feeling like a continuation of the movie series it's supposed to be. I don't know, they should probably just leave Ghostbusters alone. It was lightning in a bottle. Not even its own sequel, starring and written by the same exact people, could measure up.

@@Ben-pd2bx That is how I pretty much feel about this movie. Jason is a hack who is just trying to bank on nostalgia but gives nothing new or original to fans. There is nothing new or original about this movie at all. Its just a weak remake of the first Ghostbusters movie but with kids and 2 hours of heavy handed references to the first movie because it has no legs of its own to stand on. It doesn't help that this movie was so predictable just be watching the trailer alone. Everything that I predicted happen so I was already bored with it. You can thank Disney's Star Wars: Force Awaken for that one since everything that movie did is what Afterlife does. Worse, he wants to make the second afterlife movie based off the second movie with Vigo. (Rolls eyes). As far as I am concern, the Ghostbusters Video Game 2009 is the real sequel since Harold Ramis himself wrote the script and was involved with everything else in its development. its canon right along with the IDW Ghostbusters comic books as he too had a hand to play in it. The 2016 movie was terrible but this movie is no better. I will stick with the original first two movies, the cartoons, comic books and the Ghostbusters 2009 video game over Afterlife and Ghostbusters 2 remake I mean Ghostbusters Afterlife 2.
@BOND199512 жыл бұрын
@@Ben-pd2bx Yeah and don't pay attention to the people trashing you here. They're no different then the shills that defended star wars farce awakens only to see them fall apart when Star Wars Last Jedi aka Star Wars lost cause came out. Last, for all of its flaws, the 2016 didn't mess with canon material. The only thing it did was shit on the name of Ghostbusters not screw around with Canon material like afterlife did. Egon being a dead beat dad doesn't sit well with me and I don't how anyone thinks that is a love letter to character. Egon would never abandon his friends or family no matter how much shills want to say so and that hack Jason says.
