They stole $1.7 million

In November 2018, Defy Media shut down without any notice. They laid off their workers without warning and have held ransom the money earned by the KZbin Creators who were in their network. I was one of those Creators. Defy was my former employer and the multichannel network that represented Game Theory, Film Theory, and GTLive - EVERYTHING. We trusted them to help us and for that we and 49 other Creators in their network collectively lost 1.7 MILLION DOLLARS. Money that was owed to us, EARNED by us, and taken by DEFY. Today, the fate of that money rests in the hands of a bank, Ally Bank, who will decide the people who get their money back and those who are out of luck. After trying other methods of solving the situation, nothing has worked, so at this point we have no choice but to make our fight public. Steph and I have personally been going out of pocket to try and get everyone's money back, but to improve your chances, we need your help.
This is my story of what happened. And this is what we all can do to help ensure no other Creator, large or small, has their money stolen from them ever again.

Because it's a fraud. Even if Matpat wasn't intentionally lying, leading the kids and young teens who, by his own admission, make up the majority of his following to belive the big mean MCN stole 1.7 from GT, it's him trying to cry about getting burned in a business deal he knew the risks of. Of course, assuming it's true. However, seeing as Ad Revenue has been next to worthless for years now, and the vast majority of income comes from patreon or merch, and Matpat has been shilling his merch every chance he gets, even over a charity in honor of his dead friend, I'm going to go ahead and place a big ol 'Doubt' that he doesn't have any money coming in, and he's 'so broke you guys.' In all likelihood, this hurt him financially, yeah, but it's probably not bothering his 'staff' at all. But he's not happy at losing out on a couple grand, which, credit, who would? So he's going to try to leverage his popularity to get money in his pocket. Fucks sake, this has been happening all over KZbin, to *much* more important KZbinrs and smaller alike, and they don't cry and whine, they just move on. Because they aren't trying to lie to people.

Hey Mat, I don’t know if you’ll see this comment but if you do I have a proposal. What if the creators got together to cut out the middle man, and instead of setting up an MCN you can start a non-profit operation that will represent the creators. I call this idea a Multi-Channel Collective. Or MCC for short. Basically it would operate to provide creators with the same protections that an MCN does but instead of operating with a for-profit motive you can operate as not-for-profit. This takes away the corrupting influence of external investors who will always demand unrealistically high returns, furthermore you can ensure that funds become legally restricted so that whoever ends up running the day to day to day operations of the collective can’t embezzle funds. You know a good majority of the creators on KZbin especially the successful ones, if you guys pool your resources together and hash out a deal that works for everyone not only will you be able to ensure that you don’t get ripped off by an MCN again you can also get some bargaining power with KZbin as well.
