The Critics discuss the John Hughs classic The Breakfast Club and debate whether 80's tropes are still relevant- especially in the post #metoo era. Also Riley doesn't make any sense today.

Regardless of the ratings system and the potential restrictions on movies, kids didn't follow the rules just because their parents and adults told them they couldn't do things. If this movie was rated R back in 1985 when it came out, I can sure tell you that everyone who was anyone at my school (I was in middle school at the time) would have seen this. The case was the same for things like 16 Candles, Porky's, and Weird Science. Every one of the kids at school could relate to one of the characters. That's why it was so important for us to see, so we knew that they had just as many problems in their world as we did.

The black tar from the thermos was his thermos inside breaking. Just another thing to establish the world hates the principal. And Emilo wasn't getting yelled at for being bad at moving the magazine rack. He got yelled at after Bender pointed out that the magazine rack would block a fire exit and the principal was trying to make it seem like he didn't want it moved. With Claire's haircut, at the time girls like Pat Benetar and Joan Jett had short hair, so at the time short hair was considered to be more aggressive and "tough". And you guys need to watch more John Hughes movies. :) I don't know how high school in Canada in the 80s was, but I can only speak for America that this was pretty dead-on, personality/set-dressing wise..

What I got out if this movie is they became friends on that one day but when they go back to school on Monday they act like they don't know each other accept Brian he tries to start a conversation with them but they ignore him. And Brian is at a loss as to why he thought they broke the barriers on that one day Allison & Andrew are actually the only ones who acknowledged each other in school Allison, Andrew, Claire & John are seniors whereas Brian is only a junior. John & Claire do sneak looks at each other when no one is looking accept Brian, Andrew & Allison they suspect there's an attraction between the two before they graduate John & Claire do end up having sex but tell no one.

I love The Breakfast Club. It's one of my all-time favorite movies, and I've seen it in excess of 100 times. Despite its flaws, I think it still has a good message that was definitely more original at the time of its release. Also, as you mentioned, the performances are fantastic, and the manner in which the characters play off of one another really keeps things interesting. I was surprised that one of you name-dropped the new Jumanji movies as a comparison, by the way, as I love Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and definitely came out of it with The Breakfast Club vibes in terms of how it used its characters. Perhaps it's an overused format, but I think it's a valuable one that could still use more attention, given how much of a problem bullying is in general, especially in schools. Too many people are fixated on people's differences and simply don't consider how similar they might be, both in terms of how they feel and in the challenges they face.

I think you glanced over Allison’s problem, but her parents just ignore her, yeah they give her the material things she needs but not the emotional support, so she’s all about bring attention to her self Also she brought a sandwich , pimento loaf on white with mayo, she throws off the meat and it lands in the sculpture then adds the cereal and pixynstick

yes teens saw it when it came out .. movie came out I was a teen.... had a restriction age of I believe 13, times where different.. the head in the lap crap.. no it was not meant to be funny.. her hurting him for attempting was... you can easily see the disgust on the others faces when they understand without words that something good did not happen.. yes things where a lot different back then... we did not handle things the same way ...this movie showed that no matter how different our lives where, not matter how hard things got, how rich parents where, how smart, what ever, we were all basically all the same .. I still love this movie to this day.. the way you talked about he producer, the way you talked about the movie.. I really do not think you fully understood, you don't get the time, you do not get how we thought or handled life. We could not google our problems away. You just do not get it ... I would suggest you stop digging into the older movies cause you really just do not understand ...no lets alter that how about you pop into some Sherlock Holmes for 1938 black and white... they are interesting enough... they are short tv show length... I watched em all .. why not start going wayyyy back or start going forward cause you really just do not understand this section of time

Alluding to inappropriate sexuality is totally okay, in fact it's important when discussed and dealt with appropriately. However dipping into the tantalizing by showing an unnecessary crotch shot, and then rewarding Bender's behavior by having him and Claire end up together is a serious problem. Especially when you consider that Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy had to fight John Hughes from having nudity in the film. Discussing some questionable things that happen in a film you like doesn't mean it's bad, it just means it's even more important to talk about.

These guys don't really "get" these Hughes movies because they were largely products of their times, and how teens were during those times. The movie resonated with a lot of American teens during that time period. But it's likely confusing to a group of Canadians who look to be in maybe their late 20s/early 30s (?). They clearly misinterpret and are confused by a bunch of things in the movie. Being a teen in the 1980s isn't the same as being a teen in the 90s, aughts, etc. Having said that, even though I was in the target demo for that movie when it was released, I didn't really resonate with any of the characters. I was a bit abnormal though, since most of my friends during my HS years were adults or college kids, and I didn't really give a crap about HS drama BS in general.
