An unnecessary sequel that doesn't suck? It exists, people, and it's called Blade Runner 2049, starring Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford. And now the director, Denis Villeneuve is working on Dune. Here's hoping it's as good as this masterpiece of cinema!
Join us as we talk about the best sci-fi film to ever grace the world, other than Galaxy Quest obviously.

David's right on the money there, the storyline is simple and straightforward not much happens in the entire 2.5 hours. not many scene changes not many characters not much dialogue. Minimalistic. yet conveys so much.

When I first heard about plans to make a BR2049, I despised the notion. I thought that the original works exceptionally well as a standalone movie, and any sequels would just cheapen it. Then slowly details started coming out about the people involved and I got cautiously optimistic. The end result far surpassed my expectations, and I think it's one of the best movies of 2010s. In an interview Villeneuve said that the Jared Leto role was written with David Bowie in mind, sadly he passed away before that could happen. I think Bowie would have made that movie absolutely perfect, but Leto is probably as good of a replacement as it could have been. That being said, it's not even my favourite Dennis Villeneuve film - I like Incendies and Sicario even more. BR2049 and Prisoners share the 3rd place. I can't wait for his take on Dune. P.S. My favourite sequels of all time in no particular order: Empire Strikes Back, Godfather Part II, Before Midnight, Blade Runner 2049, Paddington 2

43:50 I dissagree about the CGI being obvios in the rain scene. Since Joi is a hologram and can't really interact with K's hand it's a lot better that they are out of sync. K can't predict what she want's him to do but he is doing his best to follow along as if she was really grabbing his hand to her face.

I think it is! But I get why other non-cinema nerds don't care for it as much. People have come accustomed to movies without rest. I find them rushed and forgetting the creative tool of a "rest", whether visual, audio, action. Also this is very much intended for theater, as in projection and impressive audio systems, rather than small form factor media.

Not getting a solid answer to if deckard is a replicant is key to both movies. We the audience need to not know if he is or isn't. The whole point of both movies is what is a soul? What is really being alive? What is life? If you know if Deckard was or wasn't kinda answers those questions somewhat instead of cause the discussion.

There was soooo much to this movie. The audio is key and seeing it on a big screen is key. At my local theater I've never really noticed a time the sound there couldn't do it, the sounds in this movie pushed it to the max. Those Punch's have some impact. Really what makes the original and this movie great is you need to be paying attention and you can sit and discuss almost every scene. This failed in the theater because this was obviously a I don't care about making money I'm making a sequel that will not shit one of my favorite movies. Honestly that made me a big fan of Villeneuve. And I am soooooo stoked for his dune! I really think that's shaping up to be amazing

Maybe it's a different country kind of thing, but here in the states at least, prostitutes call the customer a "John". Not "Joe". So I'm not sure if that was the intention of that detail. I think that was just a random common male name. If that was really the point of that name choice, that would have been a bit too on-the-nose for me. Plus, that would mean the in-universe company that makes her is really either so dumb, or so openly condescending that they wouldn't have programed her to not literally just heavily imply "hey, I'm a prostitute, and this isn't real emotion", rather than try to seem genuine (or at least be manipulative enough to attempt to deceive the customer).

Rylee being bothered from the movie's exact topic points at 34:33 of being a dystopian future is exactly what it's trying to convey. It's supposed to bother you and believe it's not right. Consider it a success you feel uneasy about it. Blade Runner literally created the film genre of dystopian future. Of course the subject matter is going to have uneasy similarities of future versions of current technology. It's a bit of a warning in some sense of how terrible it can be if ethics aren't in check with new and emerging technologies and civil/social structures.

This channel should have far better reach. It deserves a bigger audience and I know there is an audience wanting this content. I made a new KZbin account (browser/mac address/ OS/ device info all hidden) and searched for a specific movie done here with generic terms, this wasn’t on the first three pages. The main Linus channel set or Tech news should sign off saying what movie is upcoming here to link people to the channel. People in new spaces typically do collaborations with other channels to help reach different people so they know each other exist. Linus media group needs to passively reference this channel in other areas more or it needs to let this channel network with a variety of other channels.

Not sure if this has already been mentioned, but the baseline tests are passages taken from the novel "Pale Fire" by Vladimir Nabokov (who wrote "Lolita"): "Cells interlinked within cells interlinked / Within one stem. And dreadfully distinct / Against the dark, a tall white fountain played." The novel is structured as a kind of meta fictional academic thesis: a critical analysis of a lengthy poem by a fictional writer by another fictional writer, including a "fake" foreword, analysis & index of the poem. When K sits down to eat & Joi is asking him what he wants to do, she briefly holds up a copy of "Pale Fire" & says do you want to read a book, to which K responds that she hates that book. Joi says he's right & throws the book away. From what I've read there's been no explanation as to why the book is referenced. Originally the baseline test was just Gosling reciting a passage, but it turned into the back & forth we see in the film (according to a book about the making of the film). I've seen some people propose the "human / replicant / AI" hierarchy of the film mimics the "Nabokov / author / poet" structure of the book & that's why Joi hates the book, it reminds her of her spot on the bottom. But there's also a part in the book in which the fictional author is researching a second poem along with the main one. He discovers the phrase "a tall white fountain" in a second poem, both of which are about near-death experiences. He begins to suspect a link, which gives him a sense of purpose in uncovering: is this a real vision two people had? is there an afterlife? is it a real memory, a planted memory or just a coincidence that two people used the same phrase around the same time in poems about similar experiences? Ultimately he finds out the second poem's line was a typo. It was meant to be "mountain" not fountain. Finding out that his hopes of an actual afterlife are wrong because of a typo or coincidence destroys his renewed sense of purpose. You could say K's discovery that his memories aren't real follows this path.

This fantastic movie was totally robbed. I wish movies still got home sales bumps on the scale of the VHS/DVD days.

@Carpool Critics I really think that moving to a 5 point scale is just psychologically more meaningful and easier to assign in a marked way. If you still need granularity, a decimal will do. On a ten-point scale, the bottom half is just underrepresented and can be sort of all over the place. I think Roger Ebert did a good job in that respect.

So a 5 point scale where nothing's ever below a 2.5? Can you explain the difference?

@@TheyreJustMovies In terms of an absolute percentile, sure there's no real difference. But I just think that psychologically the 0 to 6 gets lumped into all the same bucket on a ten-point scale whereas in a 5-point system that's not quite the case. I think of it akin to how anything below a 60 is failing scholastically in the US. People just have different internalized views of what the scores mean even if they're "the same." Just something that popped into my head when David was defending his decimal.

Damn I want to watch it again after this podcast. I was so disappointed by its result at the box office, I'm scared that these long, slow, well design Denis Villeneuve style of films will stop existing if most people don't watch and enjoy them. With Dune being released during covid times it doesn't bode well for the future of thesr masterpieces
