Not keeping time is a form of disrespect. It means that you think that another person´s time is not as valuable as yours. It sounds like in Portugal, there is not much consideration and respect for the time of other people. Actually, I am just wondering if we could all help each other out by coming up with a list of services that we can recommend and that we have actually have good and positive experiences with that could help everyone. What do you think? For example, plumbers, electricians, repairmen, dentists, doctors, etc.

Narrow streets in Europe are common, because our cities are really ancient, and we don't want to take down ancient buildings just so cars can be driven easier. It's the opposite, that way people have a reason to use public transportation.

The bureacracy issue is also there in Spain and France for example. I think a lot of this inefficiency is due to a lack of consequences and accountability of government employees who feel quite secure in their jobs and know they can keep their jobs regardless of whether they do their jobs properly or not or are efficient or not and who are often clock-watchers who just want the time to pass so they can go home. I am generalizing ofcourse, but it is very common. If governments made it a priority for public services to be efficient, then they would be.

Keeping the air dry is important for health and it´s a good idea to get a dehumidifier and use it everyday in the winter. It is also wise to try to avoid renting or buying a very old property because while these can be cheaper, there is always a price to pay with regards to health. Most of those properties have little or zero insulation in the walls and no double glazing. Electricity costs are much higher in such properties because the heat will not stay in but will go straight out the windows and the walls and floors will feel like ice in winter. You can easily get sick and even get pneumonia. In Spain, newer properties bulit in the last five years or so have to comply with EU regualtions with regards to insultation and heating and double glazed windows etc. I think it will be similar in Portugal. I strongly urge people to try to rent or buy a newer property if you can. Having double glazed windows helps a great deal with energy efficiency and if you have the AC that can convert to a heater installed, which is becoming more and more common, then you can keep the air dry inside. That is quite disrespectful when people flagrantly disregard rules to do with health and safety, whether that is to do with driving and how people drive on the roads, or smoking, or even the assessment of health and safety for public places, such as places barriers or railings etc on paths where you could literally fall over the edge and die. There needs to be a shift in attitude by the authorities with regards to priorities and prioritizing health and safety overall. This is essential in any civilized society. The smoking issue is quite bad in Spain too, with a big part of the problem being that people still think it is ´cool´to smoke. The attitude to smoking is the opposite in the UK where it is definitely not considered cool and is quite a backward thing to do in this day and age and with all the knowledge we now have about the effects of smoking and passive smoking.

Why bother with Portugal when you can live in Mexico, Malaysia, Thailand, or Vietnam which are better alternatives than Portugal. Here is why: lower cost of living. good affordable medical care no racism safe warmer climate lots to do better food warmer people. Consider Mexico and the other countries instead.

It can take 2 years to get permission to build a house....in the US most cities will give you preliminary permission in 48 hours, then schedule of inspection....No, not here....huge areas of the country can't be touched......Taxes!! They have belief that simple things must be taxed...things that are free in other countries.....the cost of everything is high....a car can cost 2 times or more... Fuel costs...costs of common products....we are on coast it should be cheap and easy...but no.. Trying to order anything online.....

Regarding smoking. I remember fondly, the Time I went clubbing in Porto and people were smoking in the club! I was so shocked! My hair and dress had a strong stench of smoke the following day. Was completely put off the idea of clubbing in Portugal!

“Poor man mentality” is a consequence from several generations living under a dictatorship. And yes, the young generations that have grown after that are different but it takes a few generations to change a mentality being you still are raised by grandparents and parents that lived under a dictatorship. As a Portuguese I do agree with you. However, many Portuguese move abroad and there they do succeed: “no one is a Prophet in their own land.”

0 seconds ago Useful video. Thanks. I think the 7-8pm appointments in Portugal are historical due to it being very hot between 1-5 pm. In these countries they used to close shops and open for the evening again. Makes sense but strange if one is not from these countries. For example in the Netherlands it is not too hot 1-pm normally. Therefore office hours are different.

Some good news regarding the rules re smoking in Portugal: New smoking rules unveiled As of January 2023, smoking will only be allowed in spaces such as restaurants, bars and nightclubs if they have an area equal to or greater than 100 m2 and a minimum ceiling height of three meters, according to rules published on 2nd June, 2022. Smoking is prohibited in enclosed public areas, but lighting up on the open sand, for now, is still legal. You could be fined anything from €50 to €750 if you smoke in prohibited areas, which could be directly next to the beach. Hopefully, smoking at the beach itself will also be prohibited soon in Portugal. I think Spain is starting to implement this. Three main beaches in Mallorca now already have smoking bans. I think that foreigners actually help to improve things in every country that they go to simply by highlighting some of the issues that need to be addressed and since many countries rely on tourists and foreigners for a great part of their income, the voices of foreigners are often heard more than those of locals. This is not right, but it means that we can do our part to help things to improve for everyone by speaking up.

My family is from PR and I lived years in the island and it sounds just like Portugal when it comes to bureaucracy and getting things done. I was laughing so hard when you said the system is always down, this one is the winner in PR, the system is always down, they are always in a meeting or at lunch for the rest of the day lol.

I’m so sad to learn about the smoking and mold 😞. Cigarettes never used to be a problem for me. However, after living in Italy my body developed an intolerance. I can’t even be around the mildest of smoke without an automatic coughing fit. Italians smoke so much and in so many places that it ended up weakening my lungs. I hadn’t realized how much the US regulated smoking until living in Italy. 😩

I think its because you never really wanted to be there in the first place. We can put up with a lot if we really want to live somewhere. Not so much otherwise. Seems sad you have to live somewhere that is difficult for you. Also, if you are used to the dry desert, humidity and the resulting mold can be a shock.

No matter the things I don't like, humans can adapt to living anywhere in the world...and learn to appreciate the little things. We are not immune to mold, we are a poor country with very high housing costs and very low income. Mold we have to clean with bleach every two or three months during the colder wheater. Smoking is banned in closed restaurants and places so if they do that just say something. Smokers are egoists and addicted. Burocracy? Try the rest of europe. Most of things you can make online here. You have several lojas de cidadão where you can make almost everything on the same place and you can make an appointment online. If we say 9 its alwais its is 9h30. Our specialized workers are almost emigrants due to the miserable pays. Thats why there is no one. You really are in the wrong country. Doctors are in the evening so that the parents don’t lose a day of work!! Yes europe is old at least the cities that where not destroyed in WW2 so the streets are narrow. Portugals winter can be cold and dry try to go the interior of the country. And yes its cold and yes its hot and someone mild. Why did you come to Portugal? Did you expect paradise? I would suggest seychelles. Electricity is the same price in all Portugal and one of the most expensives ones in Europe. You have to send a sms with the electricity expense you have on the meter. We are poor that is why we emigrate.

Querida, Portugal is not poor at all (that's a pre + post dictatorship mentality). For a country expected to make 260 billion USD on GDP in 2022, there is nothing poor about that just governance issues. Secondly there are more Portuguese natives in my home country Namibia than Namibians in Portugal (less than 100 Namibians), and they prefer to live there forever, I love that for them and they too have issues living there just like I have living here and that's good because it shows the imperfections of life because humans are humans regardless of where they immigrate to. I did not come to Portugal looking for paradise my dear, I am a very logical and well knowledgeable individual, I don't have a Cinderella complex. I know what a poor country looks like, not even my small populated country is poor, just not well governed! Thank you for your opinion and just like everyone, we all are entitled to one. Hmm... the poverty mentality. You´re right about the brainwashing....Yes, that is common in Spain too. People talk about this concept of saudade in Portugal and this is what I would say. I respect that it may be a part of the culture, but cultures are not static and they evolve and change. It´s important to focus not just on what is wrong or how things were in the past, but to also live in the present and look to the future. Living in the past and constantly beeing wistful or sad is something we could actually call rumination. Rumination is known to increase the risk of depression. These are just facts. It´s good to reflect on the past sometimes and even feel nostalgia at times, but the past is not a real place. It does not exist. We can visit, but it´s not a place to set up home and not a place to live. We need to live in the present and have hope and optimism which give us the energy and the motivation to make our present and our future the way we want them to be.

If you expect to find the perfect country, forget it. All countries have their positive and negative aspects. And some people are made to travel and get used to other cultures, accept them and even enjoy them. Others find everything negative, disagreable, depressing. That is your case. If living in Portugal is so bad why aren't you living in another place? I've visited quite a few countries in Europe and the USA and I wouldn't live in none of them. In the USA, for example, I never felt safe anywhere and learnt the true meaning of DISCRIMATION. The same in some of the European countries with the highest standard of living, so they say. Your neighbour can virtually be your spy/enemy if you don't act according to all the rules and regulations, no sooner you'll have a policeman ringing your bell. By the end of your statement you confess you were not prepared to move to Portugal (it could be any other country...), I think you'll never will.

As far as I could understand, Lisbon. Foreigners always make the same mistake: they go to the most expensive cities, with all the problems of big cities: traffic, pollution, etc. and they expect to live in a big, modern house, driving around their cars at a very low cost. Lisbon is a European capital, safe and welcoming, full of history, by the river with a unique atmosphere. Do you expect to have this for free? You wish... Go to Paris, London, Oslo and you'll see!
