One word: INTERNSHIP. Do whatever it takes to get experience during your school year. Even with your diploma, NOBODY will hire you if you don't have work experiences, Trust me.

Why an internship though? Why not a job? (sorry I'm not from the US so I don't know how things work there, just curious)
@CheugyJesus7 жыл бұрын
Skylark an internship so that you can work somewhere in your field for free and still be able to survive before graduating and trying to find a paying job because for some reason here, "entry level" positions want you to have years of experience in the field and you can't get experience in the field if you can't get an entry level job and your degree doesn't count:
@xtaylorxboyx7 жыл бұрын
fearfactz1 what internships have you went through? Please tell me. My stomach is hurting watching this video because I have all these emotions and thoughts about how difficult and scary it's going to be if I don't know what I like to become talented at! I also haven't really socialized with any people my age (almost 18) in a long time, so it makes me nervous not socializing because that's important if I want a successful life. I'm venting and it's boring but I just feel like typing all of this. D;

I started college last school year so I guess I can pitch in: - Try to get to know yourself as much as possible before getting to college: interests, passions, likes, dislikes. You have an easier time figuring out your major, clubs you want to join, type of friends you want, etc if you do. (HUGE ONE) - If you're a Christian (or even if you're interested in becoming one), form a closer relationship with God because you face so many different challenges (academically, socially, mentally, emotionally, etc.) away from home without that close parental support you're used to getting. - Leave your shy days behind you in the past; everyone is new here. You get to start fresh with a new group people and setting, so build up your confidence and meet new people and try new things you wouldn't have done before. Reply with some more in the comments, I'm interested to see more advice!

I wish I had known that it is ok to not immediately know what you want to go to college for. I'd changed my major 4 times over the course of almost 4 years, it stressed me out, as I was pushed to go to college but I FINALLY found my place. It's scary making such a big decision especially if you are headed to college straight out of high school. Don't feel pressured. You'll waste a lot of time and money like I did. 🙄

Emily Carlisle hey, I'm gonna go to city college this fall, do you think it's better if I focus on getting good grades and learning more from English, math, and other standard majors, then focus on what you'd like to study after two years when I transfer to a university?
@imaginethatart28447 жыл бұрын
xtaylorxboyx And yes, make the best grades that you can or it will be wasted time! A lot of programs and schools look at the grades you are making in college before you can continue in your selected major. The university you plan on going to will probably focus on those rather than highschool/previous grades.

What is up with the "ramen" stigma? I'm starting college in the fall, and I don't see a time where I will have to live off ramen thanks to meal plans! I suppose if the student can't afford the meal plan then yes, they will have to buy cheap food but I can see someone spending as much a year on groceries as a meal plan would be.

Tricia Levi my college cafeteria food is horrible
@kristinarodriguez40367 жыл бұрын
Tricia Levi I had meal plans and I still ate a lot of ramen. You just get tired of the dining hall food or are too lazy to leave your room to go get something so you make ramen.
@EandEmonsters7 жыл бұрын
Also now most colleges allow you to rent a fridge and a microwave so if you make it a priority to keep up with your meals you can figure more things out than just ramen
@gabbyavery4207 жыл бұрын
I started college last school year and I never ate ramen once; same goes for my friends too. However, I think it mostly has to do with my school's meal plan. Our meal plan is actually amazing compared to many schools and the food is pretty great so that may be a major reason why I haven't lol. Also, I think it just depends on what staple snacks you choose to eat when you're hungry. There's so many different options than Ramen.
@bardvt44927 жыл бұрын
Tricia Levi yeah idk what's up with this ramen thing everyone gets a meal plan it comes with your room and board lol, but that all depends on the schools cafeteria some can be good and some can be bad but when the cafeteria is closed that's where the snacks and things come in because you will get hungry at night sometimes

Things I wish I could tell pre-college me: 1. Don't be so judgmental of entire groups, especially if that judgment is a result of stereotypes. 2. Don't condemn people because of their political beliefs. Yes, some people believe in things that they definitely wouldn't if they didn't live such blessed lives. But at the end of the day, that's not grounds for you to judge them. 3. God wants to help you. You will have prayers answered in ways that you could never imagine. When you humble yourself and ask for help, you WILL get it. 4. The Spirit speaks truth. Learn to recognize it. 5. God will give you what you NEED. EVERY TIME. He knows you perfectly. 6. It's okay to be alone. Even if you're alone a lot. What's not okay is spending that time doing self-destructive things. 7. Walking outside and sunshine are good for you. 8. You are capable of more than you know. So when you learn of something you are capable of that you didn't already know, another door opens. And you are capable of more. And more. And more. 9. Some friends will be distant while you're gone but what matters is who you can pick it back up with as easily as if no time had passed at all. 10. Friends who bring you down/ encourage you to bring others down/bring down the beauty and sanctity of life are not friends at all. 11. You don't have to be friends with your roommates but you do have to be friendly with your roommates. Nothing is worse than being afraid to go home. So make sure that even if you're stuck with people you don't hit it off with or don't like that you are always polite and considerate. 12. Let yourself fall in love even if you know you might get hurt. It is better to have loved and lost (and loved and lost and loved and lost and loved and lost and..) than to have never loved at all. 13. You are going to gain so much courage. It comes slowly. But it will come. 14. Food is expensive. Don't eat out every meal! Even though it's convenient, it adds up fast and you won't feel good in the end. 15. Breakfast is so important. So is sleep. And water. 16. Be the bigger person. No matter how angry or heartbroken or sad you are, revenge is never going to solve any problem. If you are kind to the people who have wronged you, they will never forget that. 17. Love is not deserved. Neither is forgiveness. Give and take both of them as much as you are offered, no questions asked.

I totally agree with that girl who said to read a book you want to. That was something I took advantage of most summers before college, but its great advice that I took for granted.
@beth49287 жыл бұрын
I graduated in 2013 but here's a few: ● if you can afford it, buy a cheapish memory foam mattress topper (mine was 30£ ish) for your dorm bed because those things are AWFUL ● don't beat yourself up if you grow apart from highschool/hometown friends. some people you're only friends with because of proximity, and that's fine. ● when you're calm, list a few things that make you chilled. college is often so stressful and in the heat of the moment it's difficult to work out what would calm you down. maybe it's a phone call home, maybe it's getting a coffee and switching off for an hour. different strokes. ● speaking of: take regular short breaks when working and try not to pull all nighters. ● don't get knocked up - safe sex is so important and more often than not the health centre on campus has free condoms. ● this (and the above) only applies if you're sexually active but if you can afford it, buy a morning after pill in advance, just to keep on standby. if a condom breaks it'll be a lot easier to reach to the back of your drawer than have to go to an emergency clinic. ● you can cook almost anything in a microwave

Try to join some clubs or something. The best way to make friends is by sharing a passion. *EDIT* oh another great thing you can do at some colleges is to spend a night or evening with someone who will get to know you without your parents around. A lot of the things college students talk about are not things they will say around their parents, so try to get some alone time with peers to see if you fit in with their ethos.

Travel, study abroad, take classes that double count, create an ed plan that will help you stay on track, DON'T overload yourself with major courses, stay in touch with your advisor(s) and professors, need to talk to someone? See the on-campus psychologists [they're there for you-it's okay], get involved/volunteer/do internships, and actually enjoy it (just don't overdo it). If you start at a community/junior college, it's not the end of the world (and you save money along the way - hey hey!). When transferring/applying to unis, look outside the 'birds nest' region. If you have to change majors, schools, don't graduate 'on-time', etc., you're not a failure. Just keep working on it and graduate (unless, of course, you find out uni isn't for you- trade schools?). To the Europeans, go on Erasmus (or even do your studies in a different country - most of y'all have that EU freedom to move perk) and love the fact that [some of] you get to do resits rather than having to take the whole class over if you failed.

@@gl1654 I'm at a university by the beach, with a group of close friends, and hobbies I love and fulfill me. I never thought this could happen but I'm excited for what the future brings (even though I still dont know what I want from it haha)

The only relatable things for me here were the deadlines and possible internships. I mean, no one truly cares about fashion and college is nothing like high school. I even still have contact with most of my friends.

Number one thing to know is that its ok to miss classes that only require 2 tests to pass as long as you study the book at home (;

Learn. How. To. Make. Soup. Soup was a lifesaver for me in college, make a big pot of it and put it in containers and refrigerate them! Soups are good because they are low effort and you aren't eating the same thing every day since there are so many types of soups! Canned soups are good too, but they don't taste that good to me so I avoid them.

Definetly internships. My college told me they didnt do credit for internships but I wish I'd have at least found one while in school because everyone wants you to have 5+ years of experience but no one wants to help you get it

There is no such thing i wish knew before starting college but like i regret the decision of joining college straight after high school. Should have dropped a year and actually discovered myself and find where my passion truly lies. If anybody is reading this........think about it guys. I dont want you guys to make the mistake i made

GO TO THE GYM. If you live on campus, your only form of exercise is walking to class and if your campus isn't huge (or even if it is) it isn't enough- believe me. My campus is quite big and hilly, so I thought i wouldn't need to exercise because I never had to before and was always up and about for classes. BUT THE FOOD ADDS UP AND THE FRESHMEN GAIN IS REAL

If you have a job while you're doing college, seek morning shifts if possible. I did a lot of closing shifts and became a bobble head during class.

internships don't happen before college. That being said get an internetship your sophmore year if you can. You absolutely need an internship in Junior year. If you do good or remotely good then they will probably hire you. if you dont have an internship then no one will want to hire you. Speaking from experience. Also don't beleive the salaries they tell you degrees will get you after graduation. Unless you are in California or NYC or working in IT or Engineering prepare to make
