Hello from Tokyo, Japan! I totally enjoyed your video! I have been to Helsinki once in summer and loved its quietness and openness a lot and am looking forward to coming after Covid, for sure! I feel what you talked about Finland here is just what many Japanese have in common with. We take off shoes, no tipping at restaurants, no close physical contacts, being punctual. I heard somewhere that Finns have sort of Asian descent and I have to say they must be, as they are like us!

It’s not the first time I hear that Finns are a lot like Japanese, must be true! :)

It is funny how taking off shoes when visiting one's home in Japan is an exotic cultural thing but the same thing in Finland causes confusion with foreigners.
@AlenaTalks3 жыл бұрын
Maybe Japan in general is considered more exotic, who knows🤷🏼♀️

I'd like to see tips for visiting St.Petersburg (when I'm eventually able and allowed to visit). Is there something new and exciting where I definately should go? I lived in St.Petersburg couple of months a milloin years ago so I know all the basics and how to get around the city.

There are some new things to see :) thanks for the idea, it’s great for warmer days!

I've seen maybe 5 videos from Aleksi and I think he often exaggerates and tries to make things weirder than they are. This time not so much, but two things in my opinion: being late and interrupting. 10 minutes late is still in time between friends (no need to call), but if you have made an appointment with doctor, job interview, hair salon, then yeah you try to be there by the sharp minute. If you go to a party, 30 minutes late is still in time. Interrupting with friends is quite normal: with teen girls it's common. And talkative people talk over each others quite easily, well, not as much as Mediteterraneans, but they are more lively discussioners anyway. With friends interrupting isn't really something one should worry about.

I would say everything depends on a situation. Even between friends interruption may be offensive sometimes.

@@AlenaTalks True, if someone makes a habit of interrupting others in a social group, that someone might not be a friend for long. Hogging the conversation has a whiff of narcissism, which is not an attractive trait. Of course, interrupting might be a sign of enthusiasm as well, but still, wait for your turn. PS. But yes, Aleksi tends to simplify things to make them more vloggable.

I often find some Russian friends interrupting me. There's this one guy who seems to unconsciously signal that he is about to interrupt me by going into this brief "thinking mode" (like he is deep in his own thoughts and no longer following me) and then opening his mouth about a completely different topic. I think many Russians are not used to the same talking tempo and rhythm as Finns, so maybe they get bored? Pauses between words and sentences have different expectations in duration and also the intonation or the lack of it (there is no "melody" to follow) might be confusing to Russians. I don't even know if they always know that they are interrupting me, though with some Russians I don't have this problem. And it doesn't seem to be an introvert or extrovert thing necessarily, but maybe some other personal trait like patience. Just my observations and speculation.
@AlenaTalks3 жыл бұрын
I guess it’s a personality trait. Some people speak and/or think faster than the others, it doesn’t depend on their nationality.

I have followed Aleksi's channel for some time now, less than a year. He lives only 5 minutes walk away from where I live, but I have never met him in person. I think it will happen some day that I'll bump into him walking down the street or in a grocery store or... I used to go to Lidl very close to where he lives, but now there is another Lidl closer to me. Aleksi makes live stream videos, him walking around often somewhere in Helsinki, many times close to where I live. I think I could go and catch him some day when he is live streaming in the neighbourhood. I think he wouldn't mind if I went and said hello. Many times I would like to say to some loud people on the phone that the phone was invented so that you don't need to shout. Once in metro a woman was shouting to her phone about her giving birth, in detail, how the water broke and flew to the wall and ceiling... Another time a young man was on the phone loudly telling he broke up with her girlfriend and was asking a friend if he could stay the night there. He would come late in the evening, go to sleep right away, be of no disturbance, and leave early next morning. Thanks again for the video!

Yeah, Finns are pretty forgiving of mistakes relating to these points. We don't expect anyone else to be like a Finn. Also, Finns are closer in mentality to Russians than Swedes/other scandinavians IMO.

Americans are more about status so your income is big part of how you are seen in the society. In Finland honesty is similar social "currency" if it has to be compared to something.

I don't believe Aleksi is a Finn. His hand gestures and making faces all the time on youtube can be explained by marketing or sales background, both unnatural actives for real Finnish persons. Is he Russia or American, difficult to tell the difference.🤔😉
