This video was taken from Pints with Aquinas episode #208: • Why Sr. Natalia Became...
Becoming a religious brother or sister, or a priest requires lots of sacrifices:
- No sex
- No handbags
- No nice clothes
- No (or not a lot) of money...
Watch as Sr. Natalia tackles some common objections to religious life in this short video.

Thank you for this video. I am protestant, but what you said applies to my life these days, as well. My family and many around me strongly disagree with my priorities and cannot understand what it means to be called to serve others. They say similar things that you mentioned, like wasting myself and not using my talents, while I know that serving the Lord is the most fullfilling thing to do in life.

I'm a protestant missionary currently working in a Ukrainian refugee center. Before I left for the mission field (to Ukraine) 17 years ago, my mom's next door neighbor invited me over to talk about my calling to Ukrainian orphans. I walked in thinking it would be a tearful farewell, walk down memory lane sort of thing. Instead she berated me for leaving my family and throwing my life away. She gave me every reason why I should stay. I finally said, "Then I have to choose between listening to you, or listening to my Heavenly Father." It was for me a tragic and awkward goodbye to the lady who I grew up next to. She died not long after of lung cancer as she was a heavy smoker so that was our last conversation.

Hello Cecilia - I love your name by the way. That's my eldest child's name and St. Cecilia is a great saint. Thank you for your vulnerability and I promise to pray for you in my Rosary tonight. These thoughts come from demons. It's that simple. They are temptations. Do not listen to them. One of the most beautiful and awesome truths of the Catholic faith is this - God dwells within His baptized children! Let me say it again - the Spirit of Christ dwells within His baptized children. He is closer to you than your own heartbeat. Apart from this He is "everywhere present and fills all things" as a favorite prayer of mine says. The problem is that the devil knows very well that we have a tendency to equate God's presence with sensible feelings. We might feel nothing in prayer and thus feel apart from God in the silence. It's a call to trust Him. He's there with you in the silence and in the absence of feeling. Indeed, if you trust Him while He feels all the more away from you, the closer you will be to Him. Call on our Mother by praying the Hail Mary when you feel this way and the demons will flee. Or pray the Jesus Prayer: "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner." He loves you. Convert and do not look back. Repent of any grave sins in confession that may be afflicting you, asking for God's help. Finally, treat these feelings like they are messengers of hell and call on the Name of the Lord and I promise He will draw near to you. I have struggled with this very same cross. It is challenging, but Mother Mary pulled me through it, always leading me to Her Divine Son. Also, are you aware of the Divine Mercy devotion. I love this devotion. Gaze at our Lord in that image. He is near.

Strange, but I think it may be a good thing. It may be a test of faith. Many Protastants and Evangelicals want an extatic experience or any kind of rewarding feeling or a single. Being a devout Catholic is hard. We are following Christ and learning what true love is because God is true love. Our perpos is to know, love and serve God, especially when there seems to be no reward. I reccomed, frequent mass, Eucharistic adoration, the rosary, bible study and reading about St Mother Theresa of Calcutta. God bless you.

It isn't that people criticize the Catholic faith on grounds that it is in deep opposition to our oversexualized culture, it is that people rightfully object to a practice that is systematic in excluding those who choose to marry. And to your point about intimacy with the Lord, that would be a TRADE OFF. You are essentially FOCUSING your time and energy on God for a closer intimacy with God at the expense of a family. The issue though is can you do that indefinitely.

@@Nunyadbiz212 I don't understand it is all. Paul did commend Christians who remained single for the cause of Christ, but I cannot fathom how the ONE TRUE CHURCH imposes chastity on every single would be priest and nun. That makes no sense at all to me. Why would you create a barrier to entry for those who have a heart to serve God? And considering all the priest scandals, it does challenge whether a normative practice of chastity is worth it.

@@jaimearviso4642 There are many who try to destroy the Church from within. Starting with our current pope, and all those who hide and cover for abusers. The so called church of nice, who water down Jesus' teachings. To me it boils down to us being made in the image and likeness of God who speaks truth into reality. Our higher consciousness gives us the ability to manipulate the world for good(Godly) or bad. We must not be tempted by ego or primal desire. Jesus showed us the way.

@@jaimearviso4642 I get where you're coming from, it does seem like its imposing chastity on people who want to be priests and nuns. But the truth is that if a person is unwilling to live celibately they aren't called to those vocations. God will always furnish us with the gifts we need to fulfill our vocation, and the people who are called to priesthood and religious life have a love of and a desire for celibacy.

I am a non-RCC with the gift of celibacy. Joyful in that. I am a businesswoman in a role that promotes peace-making (legal). If this sister can do physics, she must never bury that talent. She will be judged for that, as God calls us to use all our gifts for His glory. If she's delivering diapers, lovely (I enjoy menial tasks as a break from my true calling), but God has given her a gift she must share with humanity. If she loves physics, it is a sign God has called her to express that gift. We don't choose our gifts. Some are natural (like physics); some are spiritual (like healing or the gift of tongues). This lovely sister should be allowed by her superiors to teach or in some other way use her gift having to do with physics. Maybe she should work for NASA or teach at MIT. Please remember that Jesus rebuked Martha for her unhealthy concern for momentary domestic concerns, while praising Mary for her need to learn at His feet...presumably in preparation for future ministry. (Luke 10:38-42) This is why I can't be RCC...the RCC still doesn't recognize female gifts. It doesn't recognize the majestic intellect and Godly anointing of Deborah (see Judges 4-5). Deborah was likely unmarried, not the "wife of Lappidoth", but better translated as from the Hebrew as "woman of fire". She was prophetess, and every word she said came to pass through God's power. She is also the ONLY Judge who presided over 40 years of peace for Israel, indicating not only God's grace on her, but also a great gift for diplomacy. The other Judges paled in comparison to her. Rather, the RCC and many protestants make (lame) excuses for why women aren't accepted into the priesthood. Theresa of Avila was commanded to express her intellect & spiritual connection with God as a mystic. We Anglicans have St. Julian of Norwich, who wrote or dictated "Revelations of Divine Love". She was brought by God from the edge of death, and experienced a vision of Christ's love, who caused her to recover. I think she may have lost her entire family to the Black Death, and was dying of grief and despair when the Lord came to her with these great visions of His mercy...she called them "homely" meaning familiar. God came to her in a familiar way to show His mercy, healing & protection on this sister who was "no one". St. Paul said there is no male or female in Christ Jesus. Why such dogma to assign menial roles to women in the RCC? My Anglican tradition does not do so, and so I remain Anglican. (I love all the Sacraments, btw, especially Holy Eucharist). I say the RCC will be judged for forbidding women to use all their gifts for the glory of God, no matter what those gifts might be, including the higher intellectual gifts. There will be no gender in the time of the bodily Resurrection, which has already begun with the Resurrection of Jesus. Gender roles have been revolutionized with the advent of Christ's Resurrection. Read the Gospels and see how He responded to women!

Women don't fulfil menial roles in the Church. She is a cloistered nun so she's in a monastery. The church holds Mary in high regard, more than Joseph. Your claim of women being regarded as menial in the church is highly flawed. Catherine of Siena was an illiterate woman who advised the pope. Humility and obedience are the marks of true followers of Christ.

Pat Aherne 1) A nun isn’t a pastor. 2) If they’re NOT going to take their vows (poverty included) seriously, then they don’t deserve respect. 3) So if a priest, nun, or monk told you to rob a bank, would you do it? 4) Just like you’re free to state your opinion, so am I and if you don’t like it, then do what Jesus said, “Turn the other cheek.” Which is exactly what I’m going to do with you!
