As to the habit, I was waiting for a bus years ago with a friend of mine who had become an Orthodox monk and stayed in touch. An extremely excited boy (17 or 18) ran up to us and asked my friend, 'Are you a ninja?' He replied, 'No, I am a Christian monk.' and the boy said. 'Where can I get clothes like that?' My friend answered, 'We make them in the monastery.' and the boy said, 'I wish I could wear that.' My friend replied, 'You can, anytime you like. You just have to join the brotherhood.' Things went from there. Six years later that boy is a very quiet, serious and thoughtful Orthodox Christian and the director of his parish choir, most of whom discovered the church though him, and he is now engaged to the first soprano whom he also converted. Before he started teaching all his friends about Christianity, there were two old babas and a low tenor on their last legs singing in Slavonic who would have retired ages ago if there had been anyone to replace them. He is also teaching some newly arrived middle eastern girls solfeggio so they will be joining the choir soon and they in turn are teaching the singers Arabic chants so they will be able to expand their repertoire. He never wore the monastic black but perhaps he did something better. All because of a chance meeting with someone he might never have noticed or spoken to. The habit is actually a great ice breaker sometimes. (Monks are not supposed to have nicknames, but he still calls my friend 'Father Ninja.')

This is why men and women religious, and clergy, ought to always wear their habit and/or clerical garb. There’s so much grace by wearing it, and helps people come to Christ. Moreover, those religious orders with men and women not wearing the habit are all dying out, because not wearing the habit is not authentic to the consecrated life they are living.

I I was once in the postulancy for a Franciscan Order [I only stayed 5 months]. All of us, as well as the guys taking recent vows, were of the persuasion to wear the habit as much as possible when out and about. This was a shift from the older Friars, who liked to, apparently, "blend in" more, so as to be more connected in brother-sisterhood with the general public, as the Franciscans are really big on that, but we disagreed with the premise. The consensus was just as she pointed out so well here. There is also a shift toward habit wearing in other Orders as well. We need to stretch the boundaries of what constitutes a connected brother or sister to ourselves, within the human race in general, IMO.

Question: why do Nuns wear their full habits when Priests don't? Modesty, humility etc., but why don't Priests wear their collars at all times? Some Priests are on television and are completely unrecognizable as Priests by the way they dress.

Your mileage may vary. Not all nuns wear the habit all the time. To me, the dividing thing tends to be if they are more modernist or more traditionalist. Traditionalist nuns, priests, oblates, etc wear their habits regularly. And if it is true that among modernists, the nuns wear more regularly, my suspicion is it’s because it causes less unfavorable reactions. Nuns are generally still looked upon and portrayed positively in culture. Whereas priests are often ridiculed in portrayal, and some people blindly assume all priests are abusers and will accost them in public.

I reverted to Islam from the Catholic Church and there was a young nun named Rita that came to college with us, she used to study in child education, she was just the sweetest! She had to walk to the nearest Church if she needed to pray, so we offered her our prayer room. She wore the habit, but a lot of nuns in my country don't necessarily wear it anymore, it's not mandatory. I always got the best smiles from nuns walking by on the street. I actually wanted to be one when I was 14 or 15, I wanted to go into seclusion or something, but as I got older, I got closer to Islam and the need to have kids grew. I've been Muslim for 13 years now, I wear niqab and jilbab (a veil that goes from head to toe) and my late dad used to call me the flying nun when it was windy outside 😂 he was also my biggest fan! When ppl would ask him what he thought of my choices he said:"my daughter likes to do everything to the fullest, I wouldn't expect anything less of her and I'm proud of what she stands for" I feel like nuns don't get enough credit for what they do and represent. Our veil does resemble theirs a lot, depending on the style, but we do take example on previous modest clothing from Jews and Christians.

Maa shaa Allah sister. May Allah keep you steadfast and firm upon the deen. The laws of Allah have been there since the beginning and each prophet and messenger came with the same message, to worship Allah alone, to stay away from false idols, and to follow the prophet of their time. Many of the laws between all of the prophets and messengers are the same. Unfortunately, many of the divine laws are abandoned by the majority of Jews and Christians like: drinking intoxicants, hijab/modesty, eating pork, all due to modernism and liberalism but alhamdulilah Islam is the only religion that has upheld them to this day. May Allah keep us firm on his religion and guide our parents, Ameen.

There's an order that runs a nursing home in CT.... probably the only one that is safe in the country. Here in Australia, in recent years many/most Nuns have gone to non religious dress hence they do not mean anything to most people; except that they are old women. @Jade Jesus is the one Mediator in the sense that He alone is both God and man, and God and man can only be united through Christ because He alone is the God-man. Now read 1 Timothy 2:1-4, and then read verse 5. This verse says nothing about us not being able to pray for others as you seem to be suggesting, rather we are specifically told that we should pray for others. And we believe Mary prays for us. Nothing about that implies anything about her giving eternal salvation, or being equal to Christ. She doesn't and she isn't. No one debates that. A big factor in us being *specifically commanded* to pray for others is because _we are the Body of Christ._

SATANIC VERSES IN ISALM: The Star Sura (Sura 53) verses 19-20 say, "Have ye seen Lat, and 'Uzza, And another, the third (goddess), Manat?" "These are the exalted cranes (intermediaries) Whose intercession is to be hoped for." Meaning Mo tell Muslim to worship Lat, and 'Uzza, And another, the third (goddess), Mana, and ask for their intermediation with God. 105 days later, MO admitted that those verses came from a white devil. Now, during those 105 days if Muslims worshiped Al lat, Manat and Uzza, then they died during the 105 days, does that mean that MO mislead them to hell??? Why didn't God intervene immediately and tell MO that those verses were from the devil, and to cancel them????? What other verses are there in the Quran that are from Satan??????🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

@@fuzbeatboxern5714 Hey! As far as I know, scholarship in the fields of Christology and New Testament Studies, done by both Christians and seculars, has shown that modern Christianity is actually: pauline Christianity. Jesus (pbuh), and after him his Disciples, had quite a different view of his ministry and identity. A view without the doctrines of the atonement and the trinity (the divinity of Christ pbuh included), but with the insistence on the Law. Beginning with Paul, Christianity morphed from the religion OF Jesus pbuh in a jewish environment, to a religion ABOUT Jesus pbuh in a greek, pagan context.

@@akirataimatsu8741 And God makes of the wise, fools, and makes fools wise. Most of that "scholarship" is based on Germanic line of thought that the Trinity arose around 500A.D. The problem with that research, and there are many, is that there is evidence for as many as 10 hypostasis of God in the time before Jesus was born, but that actually takes reding the scholarship of today, and not taking the stuff from 100 years ago.. A great book to read is "The Religion of the Apostles" from an Old Testament scholar that describes a much different view than most Christians claim.

@@NdxtremePro In my view, the number of hypostasis before Christ pbuh is insignificant, as long as the doctrine of the trinity itself was not formulated at the latest in the time of Christ pbuh and believed/taught by him. It's not about what concepts have existed over time, it's about what concept is the true one, the Religion of Jesus, the Messiah. Recent research about James, the Brother of Jesus pbuh, has revealed a lot about the belief of the first Christians and the early Jewish Christianity. For instance, *it is not right for a woman to wear her dress up over her knees,* as the Laconian maidens are said to do, because *a woman should not expose any part of her body...* I should like, too, not only that it be *forbidden them to expose their ankle,* but also that *it be made obligatory for them to wear a veil over their face and a covering on their head.”* … “Further, the man and woman each must come to the church dressed becomingly, with an unaffected walk... *Let the woman observe this further practise: Except when she is home, she should be completely veiled, for her appearance will be dignified only when she cannot be seen.* She will never fall into sin if she always keeps modesty before her eyes, and *retain her veil,* nor will she lure others into an occasion of sin by baring her face.” In conclusion, the earliest Christians (ie truest to Christ and his apostles’ message) had more in common with Muslims than most modern Christians realize. 🙏

well since Christianity Judaism and Islam are abrahamic religions meaning they are all connected through a family tree, they all have very similar values and traditions. so that means nobody copied anyone but that god sent the same values to the same region at different times.

@@PrayTellGaming no he didn't send different messages to different people all abrahamic faiths were conceived in the middle east but the people who received those messages distorted and warped them so much that a whole other religion was needed. all abrahamic religions teach love and respect why would any self respecting follower of these religions hate and mistrust each other. it is politics that makes people hate and mistrust each other and politicians involve religion in politics to trick people to follow them and fuel their personal agendas.

No. No! Spend some time studying Islamic scholar in the western world. Islam is a totalitarian system, with a smackers of religious characters nothing like the biblical prophets. Study Islamic books, listen to Islamic scholars, Dr Jay Smith and Bob yhe Builder.

As a Muslim I will share that we believe the “hijab” or “habit” as it is called in Christianity is a traditional Abrahamic form of dress that women wear that’s full of wisdom. It promotes modesty, guards against jealousy, leering eyes of both humans and unseen creatures, and protects against the objectification of the female form. So happy to see my Abrahamic cousins (Christians) bringing attention to this subject 🙏

@tokyo peking Have you ever been to Israel? There are many Jewish groups that abide by this formal style of dress. Also, if you observe Christian depictions of the Blessed Mother Mary (a pious Jewish woman) she is also dressed in a similar style of dress as a hijab. Lastly, certain Arab tribes trace their lineage to the children and grandchildren of Abraham. His “first fruit of his vigor,” Ishmael had 12 sons and many of them dwelled in Arabia. Ishmael was also tasked with looking after his other brothers (many of whom were assigned certain portions of the region to live/preach in). *Genesis 25:1-4* [1] Now Abraham again took a wife, and her name was Keturah. [2] And she bore to him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. [3] And Jokshan fathered Sheba and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim and Letushim and Leummim. [4] And the sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abidah, and Eldaah. All of these were the children of Keturah. According to the 1st century CE historian Flavius Josephus (“Antiquities”) several of these sons of Abraham and Keturah lived in across the Arabian peninsula. Islam is a “reminder” of the original religious practices of the patriarch Abraham and this is why a line can be traced through it back to Christianity and Judaism. Muslims abide the most to these traditions based in Abrahamic wisdom because we abide by the most recent covenant established by the Ever-Living God and His Prophets. Peace be unto you 🙏 May The Allmighty increase us both in knowledge and understanding

God Bless you Sister! I also know that Catholics were first to wear the habits and the Muslims came after for whatever reason only they know!! I once went to Church with a head cover, which wasn't a veil! A Lady turned to me and asked me if I was a Muslim!! I turned around and asked her if she had ever been to a Traditional Catholic Church!?

Absolutely sister Natalia, Muslims follow the teachings of Christ more than Christians. If you go to Serbia the nuns cover their hair completely, hijab style, unlike you, as you're showing some hair, therefore not following Christ's rulings fully. I do hope sister Natalia can discuss her habit with the French who are so anti hijab, when Mary mother of Jesus is always depicted with her hair covered.

The problem we have with the Hijab is we get the feeling that it is forced on women. Nuns on the other hand are very pious and we see them benefitting society everywhere. My view is that if Muslims want the wider society to accept your habits - you need to stop insulting unbelievers, demanding sharia, proclaiming Jihad and harmful fatwas. You need to espouse peace, love and piety and be seen to espouse this. Chistianity is not about how Mary dressed or spoke or ate. It is about how the love of god manifests in all of us. Tibets should pray to God in a tibetan way, the Zulus, Mayans, Tamils likewise. We are a religion of variety and diversity but we all serve one God each in his own way. And we believe God does not want uniformity but variety with in his love.
