Hey gals, welcome on your journey to Alaska! My husband & I made that move 29 years ago. We are not off grid however we did not have water for the first 3 years, (hauled it). Had a outhouse. We built the first half of our house & lived in it for years until we added the other half. And yes, after all these years its still not finished,😂 however its dry, warm & home! We wish you the best on your adventure & if you need any suggestions or advice on gardening, raising chickens for meat or eggs, raising rabbits for meat, hunting or just living in Alaska don't hesitate to contact us. Bless you both!🤓

Interesting video. Sounds fun! I am assuming you will not have cell phone service. One solution is to get involved in Ham radio. VHF/UHF would be good for line of sight, but for distance you would need HF, which would require a General License. The VHF/UHF require a Technician license. There are online study courses which make the tests easy. In an emergency you can reach someone who can call 911 for you. Good luck and have fun.

Fortunately we do have service 😀

@@blacksprucecabinak That simplifies things. One other quick point. The license would give you a background in electrical topics, which you will need with solar. It also gives you a link to a Ham radio group. Most of these guys are very intelligent problem solvers with diverse backgrounds. A nice network to have behind you. Have fun!

Definitely worth considering. Thank you.

I agree on getting an amateur radio license. I got mine several years ago in preparation for an extended car camping trip through an area with poor cell service. Since then we’ve used it for our CERT team that volunteers working emergency preparedness with our fire department. I’m on the West Coast of US in earthquake country. Ham radio is how Alaska stayed connected to the outside world following the devastating 1964 earthquake in Anchorage.

@@karinhart489 That is very cool. We are in SW Idaho. I mainly use it in the mountains or to talk to a couple of friends. We talk when we go shooting and on the way back, with our mobile units. We also use the knowledge in SAR and on the Sheriff's Posse, however, we have the Sheriff's repeaters and dedicated radios for those purposes.
