This 2017 Mercedes-Benz E 300 is Well Made, Attractive, and High Tech - But Just Not Very Exciting

The E Class has been the Mercedes-Benz bread and butter car for many years - 10 generations, in fact, if only five as an actual E Class designation. This midsized executive car has historically been the perfect mix of size, power, utility, and luxury. Some have been hot rods, some have been coupes, and some wagons. The E Class is an absolute institution.
So is this W113 a good car, and moreso, a good E Class? Undeniably, it is a good car, and the quality of finish and interior appointments is exceptional. I'm a little uninspired by the turbo four cylinder, and find nine forward gears to be confusing. But it drives well, feels very solid, and the utility is undeniable. So, yes, it is probably a good E Class. I just wish it did a little more for me, and asked more of the driver in terms of involvement.

This I my fifth Mercedes E. w123,w124,w210,w211,w213 I keep they well maintained at an MB authorised workshop and also hand wash my car. Mercedes is Still desireable and one of the supreme brands. I have one of these that I imported from Japan. So far it has been a very good car and like you I think it is better looking than the newer ones. I had a Cls 550 which was also a great car. I didn’t like the front of the CLS however I love the steering and looks of the W212

Right around 25:00 is exactly right; Mercedes-Benz cars are now mostly just built for transportation. They will get you from A to B in comfort and isolation, and they’ll feel like a million bucks, but they are just luxurious transport, and that’s okay. My last C-Class was exactly that - built like a tank, perfectly seamless, effortless, and even somewhat frugal. Always reliable and just so straightforward. Zero excitement, but everything just worked so well.

I've owned 4 prior E class and now in 2017 E300 in this configuration. It just doesn't feel like a Mercedes anymore but much better car than last generation in my opinion. I am getting an unbelievable 28.6 mpg average for last 11K miles. I do really like the car and the technology is amazing, even though mine is bare bones model. I don't think you'll be disappointed if you pick one up.

Quick random mention. The burmester surround (the mid tier one) is significantly better in the W213 than in the W205 despite being pretty much the exact same setup. The E cabin is just better insulated and has more volume inside for the sound to fill. The W213 interior is also really impressive in person. It punches above its class IMO.

All European manufacturers have to reduce the emissions of their fleet the Germans have for round this by a) putting smaller engines in their big sellers b) buying companies that traditional make smaller engine cars 3) going more electric . Love your videos and rants. One thing I find interesting is that you don't like the detached feeling isolating the car from the driver in modern cars but love it in old cars from the 1970's and 1980s. I appreciate the comfort in my 2010 Toyota Venza because I had a number of 1970's GM V8 powered sedans and coupes. The old cars move me emotionally more than the new ones, but I appreciate the new ones for what they are

The W211 was the first Mercedes-Benz I owned. It was a 2008. I loved it. The design still holds up today. The 4matic made these cars tanks in the snow. The seats weren't great on long trips.

Great car, W212 is even better and 213 probably is the best despite the vast majority of them being 4-cylinder E300s. Thank god they went back to inline-6s.

There is an E200 in other markets. Same engine but it has 180hp. 300 is used to show it's the higher power version of that car and equivalent to a NA 3 litre V6 in power.

I have the same car. I love the massage seats and I have the same color only black seats. It has more torque than the v6 in the low range so it’s faster off the line. I also love the analog gauges and the steering wheel. I was going to trade it in after my lease was up but I hate the new steering wheels so I kept my car.

Without the adaptive cruise control package you’re missing out. You can go on and on about how you don’t need the car to drive itself. But once you’ve experienced it in traffic, you’ll never want to go back. It significantly reduces driver fatigue.

I trust everyone is well. As far as I know these cars seem to be getting a little more basic from an engineering perspective. I do not like 4 cylinder cars and I wonder how long 2 litre turbo engines last. To me a Mercedes should last much longer than a Hyundai considering the price. Would like to see a review/sales spec for the bigger engined versions. I do wonder how long these high performance smaller engines will last?
