I have had this exact car for about five months now and it's outstanding. Without charging I average 55 mpg, and that's highway heavy, I usually get 48 miles from a full charge. It won't hold a 4x8, but I have had 3x5 sheets of hardy backer in it, and 8 foot lengths of construction lumber (front passenger seat folds flat), hatch closed, no problem. It's fun to drive when you want to, highway speed passing is especially impressive, and when you don't the driver assistance package is really good. I got it under MSRP and benefited from a state tax incentive in addition--that took some aggressive negotiation with my local dealer, but it happened for me anyway. The best use case for a PHEV is is you have high electric rates but limited access to free charging, with this car I can take advantage of the free charging when available and drive really cheaply on gasoline when it's not. I drive a lot, with my previous car, a Civic, transportation fuel was a huge expense for me, now it's negligible.

Hybrids and PHEVs are the best use of the resources and are useful by a lot more people in this country. EVs are the future, and they can be fun and aggravating, but Hybrids and PHEVs are a more direct step from ICE vehicles, don't require extended stops for 'energy' and will improve MPG and save money in the long run. Every driver I know with a personally owned PHEV plugs in like it's a religion, myself included, there's quite a few coworkers, friends and family who have gone this route, we all plug in. The people who almost never plug in are the ones driving fleet vehicles with company fuel cards. Our company got rid of all our PHEVs after their leases were up for this reason and are just leasing regular cheaper HEVs now since that's how most everyone was using them, I can count on one hand how many times I saw one plugged in at work. If someone was given a company PHEV it could have been solved by just taking away their fuel card, "...but that would be too inconvenient." was the company answer.
@anydaynow015 ай бұрын
Yep, it just makes the most sense for legacy auto to not hoard batteries in a few BEVs when more people can daily drive emissions free with PHEVs, or low emissions with HEVs, until they get more battery plants running, then they can hoard away. Like GM could have literally built ten Voltec CUVs for every one Hummer or Silverado EV, and judging by how fast the Volts are selling on the used market at a premium (like my '17 Volt is the first used car where the price has actually increased substantially since I bought it right before the pandemic) and how Toyota Primes are like hen's teeth they would have no problem selling them for a profit in this market. For pure electric companies like Rivian and Tesla there's zero sense in them making PHEVs. Plus, folks who can't charge daily or have marathon commutes should have a zero emission option. If someone can charge daily there's zero reason they should be hoarding hundreds of km worth of batteries they will not use in daily driving.

The driver easily can plop his rear end on the seat coming from outside, no need to bend the neck while pulling the head inside. Getting in and out in the front is easy like in and out a minivan - most people do not touch the A pillar while getting the head in and out. I wanted a PHEV. In the 80's through to the 2010's car design was becoming more and more terrible every year, with the 10's being almost completely horrible. 1:15 Gonna say "dying" is what to expect in California. It's simplest of math, even a janitor(me) can figure it out. You are using 61 kWh to go 250 mi distance. The average cost of destination chargers is $0.50/kWh. You paid $30 for that trip. With the Prius Prime of 50mpg, at $5/gal: you paid $25 for that trip. Let's be even less generous at 40mpg, that's $31.25. Your typical EV starts at $40k, your Prius Prime SE is $33k. And we're not even including the EV Mode into that equation. We know in California, electricity is just going to go higher in price. With strict Hybrid cars, maybe there's a slight argument to make for EV. But PHEVs? EVs are getting killed by a thousand cuts if this trend continues. You are literally getting "the best of both worlds" and a guaranteed car to last 10 years in any-all conditions, whereas EVs restrict you to mostly California and cities, where chargers are.

If this was a Chevrolet Volt that I'm talking about, sure we can point out the repair costs and reliability to consider the EVs for low maintenance costs. But this is a Toyota.

Bizarre how Toyota lead the electrified game, and now, lags WAY behind! I recently sold my Toyota hybrid for a Tesla Model Y, and absolutely love it! I can charge at home, from my own solar panels, and drive ~320 miles, and quickly recharge in 15-25 min., for another 3+ hours of driving. I'll never need a gas station again.

The problem with all hybrids is that each one is yet another gas engine burning gas for 10 - 20 years; or until an improved battery technology achieves critical mass. That said, I think that for over 50% of drivers EVs are an excellent choice today: people who have the ability to install a charger at home, primarily drive around town for work and whatever, and only make a 500 mile trip once or twice a year.
@TomLawlor-iq6gm4 ай бұрын
We live on an island that takes ten hours to drive across. It has but one highway that is a continuous route for the full breadth of the place. On busy days, there can be a very high volume of traffic with many, many cars heading in the same direction and destination. No matter which BEV you source, you'll be forced to recharge several times. So, even if you can super charge in 15-20 minutes, how long will you have to wait for a charger if there are six or seven other cars already waiting (and, you can drive no further as a BEV. Yet, even on the very busiest days, you can pump gas in 5 minutes and be on your way. We have a 24 Prime. With a full charge and full tank of gas we could almost make the trip without stopping at all. Our Prime was over $20,000 less than a Tesla. That's a lot of gas money. Having said that, after 3,700+Km, our car has had one fill-up. We don't want to burn gas, but still need to be practical

There are vast spaces in the USA and Canada where even the most efficient Tesla is a scary proposal in dead winter: Alberta. Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Idaho, Eastern Washington, Eastern Oregon, Utah outside large highways, British Columbia between large cities, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, northern parts of Ontario, Quebec, Alaska, Ukon, all the North of Canada, Middle of country of the USA like Oklahoma, Missouri, etc. Looking on the map one can see the significance and need of PHEVs. The only acceptable way to own a PHEV all over USA and Canada is to be able to have a parking close to home and a plug overnight. Thanks to the fact that most remote locations, farms are still connected to the electric grid this kind of PHEV makes sense anywhere before any charging infrastructure is in place.
