It's time for this stuff. Heavenly Delusion is this super dope anime about.... Uhhhhhhh it's too much to type, watch the video. I've been a fan of the manga for years now, and was actually saving it for a "top 10 manga" type of thing- so I wasn't sure whether to be super hype or super disappointed about the announcement. Started this video, paused it. Binged the entire season. Now I'm back to finish this video. You hit the nail on the head with every point you made. After the fist episode I noticed something was off and found myself enthralled with trying to piece together the story. Every character is so well written, the writers don't take you by the hand and they leave you, the watcher to discover the story yourself. It truly embodies "show, don't tell," and has true respect for its viewers. Yes, best anime of 2023.

Man this anime/manga for me sits in the same realm as Pandora Hearts, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles, and D.Gray-Man where it has nuanced characters with real goals and interesting personalities that they've aquired from different traumas and situations. It subverts your expectations but in the best ways possible and I think that's what initially drew me into it but on top of it, the characters are grounded and intriguing in a world that lives entirely on it's own because even if we follow Maru and Kiruko we see how vast this post apocalyptic setting goes and how the world doesn't revolve around the protagonists, they revolve around it and have difficulties along the way because of that.

I feel like it could be called both because its themes straddle both genres. There’s a good deal of ecchi and A LOT of zombies get killed, but at the same time, MC is very optimistic and gives off strong shounen vibes because of that.

@@dr.bubbles It's not just a mystery anime. Most mystery anime have an obvious goal to get to. Erased's plot/goal was to find the murderer before he could kill the victim. However, in Heavenly Delusion, everything is a "mystery" because no one knows anything. Most characters are literally born or live in a world full of questions. Saying Heavenly Delusion is a mystery anime is like saying AoT is a mystery anime, or Naruto is a romance anime, or Flowers of Evil is a slice of life anime, or Beserk (2016) is a comedy anime because of how shit it is.

It gets so much better when you realize how the two separate stories being told are connected. You start to piece things together and start thinking, "Woah, that's THAT button, and he is THAT guy, and she is her and that's how their story starts and ends" and it's just incredible. I haven't watched a show before that's had me thinking about it for days, and actually rewarded me for it in such a satisfying way. And literally as I'm writing this even more stuff is occurring to me and it just makes me love this show so much more. Best show of the year for me by far.

I've almost given up on anime simply because of what you said - I'm *so* sick and tired of the fact that it feels like every anime is a retread of the same tropes because everyone has to explain every last detail, and it disappoints me because I love the medium. It's just... they're playing to the lowest common denominator, afraid that their audience won't be able to figure something out without being explicitly told something. This anime is a treasure trove of easily missed details, context clues and hints on its setting. What I loved most about it was discussing it with some friends I had recommended it to. For each episode, everyone had found and pieced back different things and when put together, we could all understand the world and the story better. Very rarely does an anime take the risk to hide away so much of its info, and leave it up to the spectator to be discovered. But what really speaks to the quality of the writing, is that the show is entertaining as fuck at every level, no matter how many clues you pick up on, no matter how much you invest yourself, it's just a damn good watch.

I watched 17 seconds, paused, looked it up and started watching ep 1.. UPDATE: I binge watched the whole show in one sitting. Holy crap, it was amazing. The characters were AMAZING, the world felt so rich, the multiple story lines were amazing, the animation and art was stunning and just the story and writing man.. One episode i would be horrified, the next i would LAUGH. I AUDIBLY LAUGHED AT AN ANIME!!! There is nothing Maru can do to adequately punish Robin for his crimes. I give this anime 2 out of 10 because of the last 2 episodes. Before that I might have rated it 6/10. Seinen typically tries to be edgy like this. It's just gross and has put me off the genre, if not anime in general. I was hoping for depth in this anime, but it never happened.

Honestly, this anime should have been as popular as Oshi on Ko, or maybe even more. This anime was, in my opinion, a masterpiece in all respects. The story, the characters, the production, the direction, everything. I simply give the first season of Heavenly Delusion a 9.5/10.

Heavenly Delusion is kinda like a post apocalyptic open-world video game. It has an interesting and mysterious main story + some masterpiece side stories. I laughed with it, I cried with it and I was stunned with it. Perfect anime imo.

Every single detail in every scene of Heavenly Delusion was planned and well-thought out. I can't fully describe how amazing this anime is. It's slice of life, action, psychological thriller, romance, drama all in one. Heartwarming but also very dark. Touching on gender issues is such a unique quality in this anime. Such a wild mind fuck anime. Don't skip this.

This is honestly one of the best anime I've seen in the last 5 years. Captivating story, mystery that genuinely keeps you interested, as well as the pacing being on point. I can't agree with Scam more on this one. It's a great watch and if you've been into anime for 15+ years, this one will definitely make you fall in love with the rich story-telling of anime all over again. There's tough scenes and the use of consequences enriches the story while driving connecting with the characters touching. 10/10 can say I cried during an episode of this, can't wait to see where it goes from here.

You convinced me to watch this show. I just now completed it and returned to say this was a 10/10 recommendation. Heavenly delusions is my best anime of 2023, and that is unlikely to change. I simply adore how real the characters are and how organic their interactions feel. The story is mysterious and gives you space to predict what a character will do next, what a character's true intentions are, and what really happened to humanity. Tragic and comedic scenes hit their marks. This show is, simply put, executed almost flawlessly. It reminds me of Promised Neverland season one. I pray to God season two doesn't follow in PN's footsteps...

The "trans" character is something old school sci-fi used to do: an actual exploration of what the concept behind what is really going on would mean. I won't try to say "she's really trans" or "she really isn't." It's much more interesting than woke/anti-woke political discussion. Moreover, _the drawings and who they're given to is something I need to rewatch the show for._ Because holy crap is that another layer of the horror aspect of it.

@@lorenzo7059 Moreover, his male brain was transplanted into a female body at the start of his pubescence and the middle of hers. The hormone regulation has got to be all over the place, and a quick google search fails me in identifying where in the body the major sex hormones are produced. However, it's almost certain that his brain is bathed in female-puberty-levels of estrogen and testosterone, not male-puberty-levels. That said, the anime seems to be treating the transplant as fully successful, with no need for follow-ups, so we should assume that any damage this might do to the brain designed for one balance getting another is hand-waved away. What the character is left with is a choice - conscious and subconscious - as to whether to cling to an identity he remembers but no longer physically has, or to embrace an identity she didn't have but now does. It's an interesting problem, from the outside, and horrible from the inside, I'm sure. It _does_ seem that the character is becoming comfortable with her body to the point that she's accepting its desires over those that might have been native to the male brain. (And evidence doesn't seem present that he was gay before the transplant. Whether there's evidence he was into girls or not is something I don't recall.) In all, the character is the character and does as she is written to do, but the examination of possibilities remains interesting.
