our neighborhood's nextdoor is so toxic. people started brigading this one lady because she'd give advice on every post about a found animal, and there was a whole thing about the neighborhood's christmas decorations being blue instead of red 🙄

My Nextdoor is just full of old people warning about scams they fell for over the phone or online, so... largely useless information to anyone under 50, as well as people who will badger you when you ask actual questions like "does anyone know why they closed down x block on x street? There's a large police presence, should I be worried? I'm just one street over." That was the entirety of my engagement with the activity but it earned me quite the angry response from a retired firefighter (supposedly), not from my neighborhood, who proceeded to tell me to mind my own business and how nosey citizens like me get in the way of the work of police and first responders. So, really, I'm not sure what I'm supposed to use the app for, but I feel like I need it? I've seen it reunite people with their lost pets and I have a dog, so... worth it just for that I guess.

13:52 reminded me of when I first moved in with my boyfriend and someone in his neighborhood Facebook group posted my car, license plate and all, stating that I have been illegally parking in the street. It wasn’t even a problem, so long as you moved your car on trash day so I got put on blast for no reason. It was great!

Nextdoor posts in my area have 3 flavors -someone posting a picture of a bug/animal saying “what is this?” with 14 replies that are all obviously wrong -lost/found dog (half of them without pictures of said dog) -a 4 paragraph rant about a local restaurant that charged 25 cents for an extra ranch

Yep, this confirms every belief I had of what next door was having nothing to go off of but email invitations from neighborhoods near my parents house and now my current apartment. This is why I’m heavily considering moving back out to the middle of no where. Nextdoor is a staple of capitalism. Half the complaints in this video were concerns about property values dropping. I’m a big fan of using social media, mostly Facebook groups, for finding new friend, groups, and churches because I’ve moved so much in my life but Nextdoor definitely ain’t it. Thanks Emily.

13:25 My wife and I had an $800 car while we lived in a nice part or Orange County. It looked like an $800 car too. Apparently it was always a hot topic at the neighborhood HOA meetings, but it was legal and registered so there was nothing they could do. Always got a kick out of it. We were full time college students at a local university, not sure what they expected us to do.

the suburbs are hell on earth. white flight didnt just separate the white communities from non-whites in the cities, they separated the whites from themselves, making community impossible. in the city, the more dense and walkable, the more you see your neighbors, which is how community is created. this physically cant happen in low density car-centric places. that spy flower post is dystopic as hell. in a traditional city, they would see that neighbour at the local stores and restaurants, and could just ask about the flower. when we lived in a dense walkable neighborhood, we saw the same people and dogs constantly, inside our apartment tower and outside it. even spoke to some of them. this is rare whenever we live in suburbs. we never see anyone outside
