HUGE props to the sponsor for granting a 2 week publishing delay to allow room for other voices. At the end of this month I'll be donating all of the KZbin ad revenue from this video to Black Girls Code, an educational nonprofit that introduces computer coding lessons to young girls from underrepresented communities. Absolutely everyone should have the opportunity to make awful, terrible, stupid, awful robots. Except for Michael Reeves. He should probably be stopped.

This is the simplest telescoping arm design I've ever seen! The torsion strength be improved by putting a zipper down the length of the seam. Given the way the tube is extended and retracted, I don't think adding a zipper to the seam would be too hard to incorporate
@VoltisArt2 жыл бұрын
Interesting idea. I think it would add a lot to the torque required, though. A zipper strong enough to be reliable holding that antenna would itself be bulky and need a heavy push both ways. I wonder if some kind of Velcro would do the trick? The lock doesn't need to be very strong at a given point, but the collective strength over the length would add up fast to prevent twist.

Technically you could've used wires, as the spool does flatten out and doesn't _immediately_ close into a circle, but instead gently lofts from a flat to a circle. Spool of wire where the wire exits from the interior, like whats used for hoses and extension cords, would work well if it was geared to the rolatube drive, for retracting the wires while the rolatube retracts. I'd be curious to see if this could be made into a decent linear actuator, if it can be, it's retracted form is probably the most compact of any telescopic actuator. It just needs some improvements on the actuation mechansim; maybe instead of rollers driving it, you have a motor on the inside of the coiled form, then passive rollers to guide the flat form before it's allowed to collapse into a cylinder.

Just a heads up Allen, but the ESPs (8266 & ESP32) support a technology called ESPNow, which lets you super easily send data to other ESP devices with low latency and w/o the need for a WiFi network connection, and is completely adhoc. In just a few lines of code you can send and receive C structs from any ESP device to another. That would probably be better ( and easier) than the AP client WiFi network you had to use with the HTTP server on top ;) I absolutely love this project, completely genius. It made me laugh a lot!
