Lax Horatio I’ve been watching it since it came out. And as a kid I loved it as a kids movie, all the cheesy stuff like talking animals and whatnot. But as I grew up I realized how clever some of the lyrics were like Shakespeare references and how in the intro song The princess says “I’m realizing that every present comes with strings”-STRINGS like an expectation and obligation. The characters aren’t just mindless girly barbies, they’re smart and innovative and have a strong sense of duty. The princess was prepared to marry a rich king she didn’t love to save her kingdom from bankruptcy and Erica was working every day as an indentured servant to pay off her parents debt. And in the end when the man she loved pretty much proposed, she still chose to pursue her dreams first and THEN come back for her love. New Barbie movies sport shallow plots, hot pink and glitter, where when you look past animation and the talking animals, Princess and the Pauper is rich with culture, valuable life lessons, and music fit for a Broadway stage. Hopefully that made sense 💕

In Tangled they introduce the objective by making her hair magical, in Barbie it was about offspring of love or something, but in the original, aside from replacing the cabbage, Rapunzel serves no objective to the witch. Is there something I'm missing?

This is still a more faithful adaptation than Swan Princess where Rothbard turns his assistant into Odette and Derek literally says he loves Odette. He says her name out loud. Not 'I love you' to the fake, no 'I love you Oddille'(which doesn't make sense in Swan Princess anyways because Derek and Odette know one another since childhood. So he knows the name is Odette. In the ballet, they were strangers and he met her once. And due to similarities of names he assumed Odile was the right girl) So the curse should be broken but it still gets her. Because that's a beat in the story. Here they at least had him say I love you to Odile, and Barbie-Odette dying due to her curse makes sense.

Apparently the people who orchestrated the soundtrack are from a famous orchestra in London or something. I forgot most of the details and know nothing about them. But my cousin who loves band orchestrated music was in great shock when she saw who made the music. She was an orchestra band freak so yeah she was happy to see that they payed good money on the best band in her eyes.

I know right? Odette falling unconscious following Daniel's misled love declaration always freaked me out when I was little. And Daniel realizing the deceit and angrily crying "Where is Odette?!" always made me feel so bad for him, and though they didn't show it, I always wonder how he must've felt when he found her body. Then, after Odette wakes up, she's knocked right out again! Like jeez Barbie what are you doing to me? XD
