In san Fransisco a gram of fentanyl is 10$ and the dealers in the tenderloin all try and be the first to break out their bag in order to give out a sample and to lock in the sale. An addict could ( and I've witnessed this personally) go from one corner to the next saying they need a sample and are going to go around the corner to shoot up and will be back to buy an amount. You couldn't do this frequently for a long period of time . But you could do it both shifts in a day. And meth is even cheaper...............,..it's out of control . I've seen addicts trick or treat for drugs all through the year. 😅

A few years back a kid got a little fucked up from a few tootsie rolls he had eaten. Fever, puking, was really out of it. When his mom took him in they did a bunch of tests before finding out he digested cocaine and then she took to Facebook. I know the guy who handed out those tootsie rolls, he had cocaine debris on his table that he poured the tootsie rolls on. He felt so bad about the situation he actually quit doing drugs and decided tootsie rolls aren't the candy to pass anymore.

Dude with a friend in the candy industry here. Normally when someone finds a “razor blade” in their candy 9 times out of 10 it’s actually a metal shard that has broken off of a conveyor. This can happen with lots of stuff from canned goods to soft drinks though safety standards for that kind of contamination has become so good that it’s exceedingly rare (bugs on the other hand while still rare are more common). If you by chance do find a metal/wood/glass shard in a prepackaged consumable contact the company immediately along with any information on the batch if you can find it on the packaging. If they’re worth their salt they will immediately shut down that line until the problem is solved. It’s also considered good practice to send thanks in some form, normally via a coupon or in some cases an entire box of whatever you bought and/or similar goods (from a different batch/line of course.) Edit: ancient comment I know but for the people talking about that Johnny Test episode, that’s actually based on a real trend from the 90’s to the early 2000’s where a LOT of people were faking damaged or contaminated goods to game the system and get free stuff. Of course it’s always happened before and since but for a while the behavior was so rampant that it made the national news.

@@LycanKai14 how else does an alleged tampered piece of candy get in a bucket? I assumed kids walk door to door and at one of those doors, someone has tampered with the candy they are giving out. Normally, it goes in a bucket and becomes anonymous. But if it sets off an alarm as it goes in the bucket, it's not anonymous who did it. Parents are usually with kids true, but I have seen tons of parents wait at sidewalk distance while kids go up to doors. I'm just thinking worst case scenarios, someone looking to hurt children might act suddenly if an alarm goes off while they know they're doing something bad.

We were talking about this in my socio class and for the case that happened in the 50’s, it was concluded that it was actually the parent who contaminated their children’s candy and was less of a “they’re poisoning our kids candy!” And more of a specific child abuse situation. The headlines were indeed fear mongering because the topic of child abuse began to rise and they realized that children were getting hurt but using media to highlight the wrong causes. Instead of realizing, “hey, parents are hurting their children”, they blame it on the candy

From what I've heard, that was deliberate: this was right around the time packaging candy for Halloween was actually practical ("fun size" Snickers, etc.) so the candy makers jumped on the poisoned kid story to try and promote their product. "All our candy is safely wrapped in plastic, no way the evil drug dealers could get their poison in these candies! Stop giving out those dangerous unprotected apples and invest in our candy instead!"

the 'poisoned candy' thing I believe got more mainstream after the Rondal O'Bryan case in 70's. Where Ronald's son died after eating cynide laced pixie sticks and Rondal claimed it was given to them by a mysterious man in one of the houses they've been at, and the police went into high gear and for days it was publicized that someone gave kids poisoned candy(four sticks were poisoned) and then it turned out that Ronald did it himself for insurance money he took on his two kids, and the other two pixie sticks he gave out were just a smoke screen to divert suspicion from him...bc if only his kids got the tampered candy then he'd be imidietly looked into into. So yeah, it was all just one shitty, greedy parent trying to off his own children and get away with it.

There was actually a Dad who poisoned his own family with pixie sticks back in the 70’s for insurance, but that is the only story I know of where a kid actually died and it was at the hands of his own father. We took our daughter to trick or treat at my husband’s office at Microsoft. Our daughter always ended up with a bucket full of full-size candy bars because his coworkers went full out on Halloween. The offices were decorated and everyone dressed up. It was fun for the kids.

I'm not going to say that that's not unpleasant, but it sounds like you'd notice that either in preparing the fruit or in eating it. If a person bit into a strawberry that had a needle in it they would definitely notice that something was wrong, or if they were slicing an orange then the knife skipping off of metal would be a dead giveaway. Still super unpleasant for sure to bite into a needle and it is entirely unhinged to put needles into food for the sake of wanton destruction but the odds of a needle doing medically significant damage seem low.

But even if you didn't know when the candy went in, you could still find it quickly. All you have to do is dump out half the bucket, and if the a.arm doesn't go off, you know all of that candy is safe. Or, if it does go off you can test that pile in smaller groups.

Lemme just dump out half of my candy onto the ground while I’m out Trick or Treating and then when it inevitably sounds off the alarm, I’ll have to put each one back into the bucket one at a time anyway to single out which one is the problem candy. Real great and well thought out solution you came up with. And that’s just assuming there’s only a single problem candy. There’s always a chance that there was more than one in that handful that got dumped in, so you can’t even just stop once the bucket sounds the alarm. You’d need to test every single one in the group that sounded off the alarm to make sure you’re safe, unless you want to just throw them all back in at the same time and hope that there wasn’t another one in that group. Otherwise, you’ll have to repeat the entire process all over again. You know what would be a better solution? Just carrying a second bucket/bag to transfer the good candy into as you get them. That way, when the alarm totally goes off on the bucket, there would never be that much to have to deal with in there. Even if you get a handful at a time.

There was a case a few years ago where a dad put rat poison in his kids pixie sticks and was using the hysteria of tampered Halloween candy to try to build an alibi, I can't remember if it was his son or his daughter but one of the kids actually died, he also handed out a few other tampered pixie sticks to the neighbors kids but fortunately his kid was the only one who actually ate any

It happened in Houston Texas in 1974, the man was named Ronald Clark O'Bryan, also known as The Candy Man and The Man Who Ruined Halloween. He killed his 8 year old son named Timothy and tried to kill his other kid a 5 year old daughter named Elizabeth and three other kids (children of his neighbors and friends) to disguised the killing. Only his son ate his since his daughter was super sleepy and went to bed immediately. His son complained his stomach hurt very much and as he was vomiting and convulsing in the bathroom, he went limp in his dad’s arms. Timothy died on the way to the hospital, in most likely horrible pain.😢 The other kids didn’t eat theirs but one kid almost did but couldn’t open the stick due to the staples and instead fell asleep with the poisoned candy in his hands. Ronald was in massive debt of over $100,000 at the time due to him not being able to hold down a job (he had over 21 jobs in 10 yrs and at the time of the murder he was about to be fired from his at the current job he was being investigated for theft). He had taken multiple life insurances on his two kids, ranging from 10,000 to 20,000 on each kid, and planed to cover his debt and take a long vacation and buying new stuff with the money. Apparently Ronald planned this months in advance and bought the potassium cyanide the day before Halloween and put in his son’s pixie stick enough poison to kill 2 grown men and the other 4 sticks enough to kill 3 or 4 men. He try to use the famous myth of a psychopath poisoning candy but it fell apart when he couldn’t identify the “neighbor” who gave the candy and when he did point out the house he supposedly got the candies from, the actual homeowner wasn’t at home at the time since he was at work which was confirmed by his coworkers. Plus the kids all said they were given the pixie sticks by Ronald before even going trick and treating. Plus his wife said after coming home and dropping the neighbors kids off, he was very adamant their kids eat the pixie sticks before going to bed. Plus immediately the day his son has died he collected the insurance company to take out the money from the multiple policies and at his son’s funeral bragged to family that he couldn’t wait to use the money for a vacation. When arrested he was adamant that he was innocent and loved his kids, that it was a “crazed poisoner” who did it. He was given the death penalty and was executed by lethal injection and still saying he was innocent despite the huge evidence against him. O'Bryan was shunned and despised by his fellow death row inmates for killing his child and was "absolutely friendless". The inmates reportedly petitioned to hold an organized demonstration on O'Bryan's execution date to express their hatred of him. He was put in solitary confinement for his own safety I think due to the other inmates threatening violence towards him. Also I think he was the first man in Texas to be executed by lethal injection and his last words were, "What is about to transpire in a few moments is wrong! However, we as human beings do make mistakes and errors. This execution is one of those wrongs yet doesn’t mean our whole system of justice is wrong. Therefore, I would forgive all who have taken part in any way in my death. Also, to anyone I have offended in any way during my 39 years, I pray and ask your forgiveness, just as I forgive anyone who offended me in any way. And I pray and ask God’s forgiveness for all of us respectively as human beings. To my loved ones, I extend my undying love. To those close to me, know in your hearts I love you one and all. God bless you all and may God’s best blessings be always yours. Ronald C. O’Bryan P.S. During my time here, I have been treated well by all T.D.C. personnel." Also during his execution a crowd of 300 demonstrators gathered outside the prison cheered while some yelled "Trick or treat!". Others showered anti-death penalty demonstrators with candy. His wife claimed she didn’t know anything but his plans so wasn’t charged with anything and quickly divorced him after he was sentenced.

@@icephoenix174 Well I live in Texas and I’m fascinated by true crime, and I was highly interested in this case since it’s close to me and supposedly he was the man who started or revitalize the poisoned candy myth since during the initial investigation the whole city was in fear there was a crazy man poisoning candy and I think most families sent their candies to the police to check for poison or threw them away. I think even the company of Pixies Sticks delt with some losses due to the paranoia. It’s detailed as I was checking other websites to make sure I was getting the facts correctly as I know so much on top of my head. I apologize for adding the death of the kid as it was reported in the autopsy reports, by Ronald and his wife’s testimony but to show how evil this man is as he was there watching what was happening and comforting his son while he did this to him, I can’t help but feel he probably got some sick joy watching what was happening. It’s really sad and tragic but I’m glad Timothy got justice and Ronald died alone and possibly in fear as he is hated by his community and by other death row inmates for his crime.

For anyone interested in the subject I believe the podcast Decoding the Unknown, which is focused on debunking conspiracy theories and urban legends, covered the topic. They went through the 3 actual cases of kids dying from halloween candy and in all 3 cases it was actually the family's fault. Hell, in one case it was a murder to commit insurance fraud edit: Also Charlie does have a funny "small brain" moment here. "Oh if they drop a handful of candy in now you have to open them all one by one to check!" or you could just pick that handful up and drop them back in one at a time till it buzzes again

I've had many different bad Halloween experiences, but none of them has made me stop loving Halloween. I got drugged by an old man. He put crushed up benadryl in the candy he was handing out. My baby cousin and I were attacked by a dog that I sadly had to kick in the mouth to keep it from biting my baby cousin. I got attacked by a man in a clown costume and I beat his ass into the dirt in front of my baby cousin, her friend, and the man's girlfriend. Dude dressed up like Leatherface picked a friend of mine off the ground and threw him onto a rock, knocking the wind out of him. I had borrowed my grandpa's axe for my costume so I was swinging that thing like crazy and was able to chase off the dude. Nearly got hit by cars on multiple occasions but who hasn't? Some dick bag tried to kidnap my best friend's little sister and I broke his fingers as payback. But yeah. Halloween is still my favorite holiday!

They'd probably freak out and scream about it on the porch. That's still attempted man slaughter to children even if it's never eaten. And most kids don't go with their parents to houses since it's lame in their eyes. They'd be very inclined to do something worse and not let the kids go back to their parents right there on the porch with a weapon to not get jail time. Assuming that this invisible threat actually happened of course. In real life this would just be an expensive bucket that never needs it's main function besides an older sibling pranking the younger one into giving all their candy

@@EveTheRaviolo that isn’t true, there are 3 cases of kids getting injured or dying, that’s all. there are hundreds of cases of candy being tampered with. i think there were a few instances just in ohio a couple years ago of sewing needles in candy-if you simply search it up, past all the opinion articles talking about the myth, you can find recent police reports and such. i’m sure a lot of them were people looking for attention, but let’s not pretend it never happens, or that nobody should bother checking candy. i live in canada, there’s been a couple cases in calgary, iqaluit, and a few in alberta. again, isn’t a widespread thing, but still-it happens, and police urge parents to check halloween candy every year. if anything, checking candy is great cause you’d probably throw away anything with a broken wrapper that could’ve been contaminated w germs or gone bad :^) as long as we don’t fearmonger, it’s reasonable to be cautious

There are some people who just want to cause general harm and/or incite panic. Either they don't care if they see it so long as it happens or they hope it will blow up on the news and they'll see the fruits of their labor alongside the world. Ever hear of the poisoned Tylenol case several years ago? While I doubt blades in candy are common, these types of things -- anonymous violence/attacks -- do happen.

Just a little fun fact. In Brazil we have a type of chocolate called "Brigadeiro", and in some places they put weed in this chocolates and call them "Brizadeiros", where "Briza" it's the state that you be when you eat the weed. Charlie talked about the drugs on candy, and remind me of this haha
