I haven't been for a few years but I have been an amateur car designer for the past few decades. This design is probably THE best design I have ever seen since I put my pencil down. (although the tail lights need to be reworked, two lights either end with the inner been round the outer semi round on the inside and following the outer panel contour on the outside, the rear panel needs slight alterations, embossed framing creaes/line). I hope this mıodel get's realized, please tell Mr. Bob Laishley, thank you. : )

Lotus says the ev emira replacement coming in 2025 or 26 will be within 100# of the emira weight. Porsche says the cayman/boxter ground up ev due in mid 2025 will be within 100kg or less of the current ice 718s. The Xiaomi sc01 ev is a 2dr 430hp awd ground up sports coupe coming later this year in china. Starting at 41k with a 2,900# curb weight and 300 miles of range albeit on the stupid cltc range test. But still mid 200s wltp or epa. Light quick and cheap. 😎 And this is just a lotus/tesla gen1 roadster do over 17 years later with less range less power and still slow charging albeit a bit cheaper. 😀 I want caterham to build it in mass, but with at least 330hp(call tesla up and ask to buy a few thousand plaid cf motors or lucid? Ad solid or semi solid state cells to push the range to 300 or so+4 seat only. 3 changes would make this sell like crazy if the price was 65-80k.

This is where EVs should be going, light and simple. If there is a 'green' claim to EVs then simplicity is essential. The Caterham looks amazing, they deserve a winner here.
@AZzalor6632
@AZzalor6632 Жыл бұрын
Totally agree and imo that's the biggest issue with EVs right now. You see all those big bulky SUVs like the iX and for them to get a decent range, they have to have a huge battery that makes them insanely heavy. Cars like that go fully against the sustainability and "green" factor that EVs should have and at that point are no better than an ICE car. EVs should be lighter, smaller and simple to preserve resources and not need those huge batteries. Good aerodynamic is also important, so SUVs shouldn't even be built as they have shit aero.

@Kimoto504
@Kimoto504 Жыл бұрын
I'm sure they exist but they're engineers. The catch is that the managers, execs (and stock holders!), and accountants have the biggest say. Engineers want stuff to work well and pay for itself. The latter group want things to produce more, more, and more profit for more, more, and more time... so they add stuff for that end under the guise of "features" and being for the customer.
@shakeelali20
@shakeelali20 Жыл бұрын
@@Kimoto504 You're 100% right. Unfortunately the bean counters are often the ones who win out when it comes to building anything fun. When you hear a bloke like Bob referencing Colin Chapman, and talking about his passion project, it makes me happy to know that the future isn't all bland fwd SUV ev's with 10sec 0-100 times. They've put their (admittedly limited) budget to spectacular use getting an EV under 1200kg let alone a low slung, 3 seat sports car. That's less weight than a modern Toyota 86 or MX5 in some specs and it's going to have bucket loads more power and torque.

Where is the "buy now" button? As a Tesla owner (already 500kg less than a Taycan) THIS is what I have been waiting for. Well done Caterham. Thank you in advance for putting it into production as soon as possible.

The transparency is very confidence inspiring. I think most people who want to take a sports car out for a blast will happily stick a bag in the passenger footwell or otherwise there looks like a very reasonable amount of space behind the seats anyway. I bet this thing is a little pocket rocket with its electric motor acceleration and light weight. Hoping for a drivers review soon. Love the colour too.

Mark me as relieved; I drive an NB Miata, which weighs about 2300lbs. I've had it for 8 years, now, it was the first car I bought on my own. Each time I think of switching to electric, I get nervous because of the increasing weight and lack of soul. Caterham has essentially just made a stunningly beautiful Miata-weight electric sportscar with a decent range. Time to start saving up money... I think I know what my next car will be, salary willing! It even has more storage room than the Miata with that back seat XD

Finally some lightweight cars to counter the SUV trend! Now they just have to become cheap enough to be an option. I wouldn't mind a car that cannot go faster than 100 mph and slows down on uphill roads as long as the handling is alright, the drag doesn't kill any efficiency ideas, range exceeds 200 miles and the whole EV doesn't weigh more than a ton. I know the potential profit margin is lower than with high end sports cars but most people don't need that. Most people drive less than 50 miles per day, often alone or with only one passenger. And a bit less than most people would rather die than buy an electric Smart which satisfies the rational demand, because it is horrific to look at.

Bob mentioned how battery thickness has dropped dramatically in a short period of time. This is where I shift to Robert Llewellyn's mocking voice "EVs are too heavy! EV batteries are evil. EVs are this, EVs are that!" Well blah dee frickin' blah, those people are making a stationary argument about a moving target. Nothing in the world of electrification is static. Right now EVERYTHING is changing all the time and quickly. Thus we get Caterham and Project V, a car that would not have been possible 10 years ago, maybe even 5 years ago. I guess those people who just can't accept change are never going to be happy about the electric transition. Oh well, there's always someone who gets left behind.
@EleanorPeterson

With respect, one thing that doesn't change is the absurdly high cost of everything related to EVs. It's outrageous, but nobody seems to care. Why? Because there are just enough comfortably-off pay-by-month consumers to keep the market afloat and to ensure that manufacturers don't have to give two hoots [🦉🦉] about the people who need [sic] affordable cars, and not just want something nice to play with. EVs are STILL just whizzy techie toys for rich boys. Why are batteries still so expensive? We've had decades of useless progress; useless because the end product is still 5x too costly. Well... that's the big problem with lithium chemistry, isn't it. Lithium batteries are garbage - not because they don't work in the short term (I'm not denying that they work) - but because to do so they require so much sophisticated (and costly) cooling, charging/discharging and monitoring gubbins. When will EVs become affordable? Never. I'm fed up of the EVangelists spouting their complacent "Oh, stop moaning, woman; in real terms, battery prices have halved over the past decade. Practically everyone can afford an EV now." Rubbish. I'll never be able to afford an EV of any description, whether it has one wheel, two wheels, three wheels or four. Technology marches on - that's true. But it's equally true to say that its price climbs ever higher. Two decades ago, my bicycle cost just under £130 from Halfords. It's still running perfectly, and I ride 70 miles every week (I'm based in West Yorkshire). I've done well over 50,000 miles on it. A few new tyres, a chain swap, a bit of regular maintenance and some oily hands... Otherwise, it's been great. To replace my bike with a modern equivalent would cost... just under £130. See? That's what cheap, economical personal transport is all about. Nuts to EVs and all who sail in them.

Love the design of the Project V! Never heard of Caterham but love that iconic shape of the 7 now that I'm looking at them on Ecosia search. As great as it looks, and probably handles, neither lightweights are faster than a Tesla Model S Plaid, and have 2 fewer passengers. The Plaid is $120k, but this Caterham could compete at $150k. But I guess they sell kits? Maybe it will be under $100k? Under $50k would be a revolution, even having to build it. Hope these guys get funding for production. The 3rd seat is for EV grin; so owners can wow more friends at once!
