Already own it. I’ve beeneen driving for the past two weeks. Absolutely love it! Regarding the blinkers, it is similar to BMWs’. Two stages. First click for lane changes. It blinks three times and turn off. If you press until you feel the second click, that is for big turns. Hope this helps. As always fantastic unbiased review. Keep up the good work!!

Why do Aussie car reviews constantly call vehicles "Chinese Made" or the "Chinese" SUV as if it were a warning? You don't refer to it as the "Thai Ute" or a Ford Ranger a "Thai made" vehicle? These days, robots make cars in very advanced factories all over the World, not a few guys in Geelong turning out b grade cars like we once did. I do enjoy your content as its refreshing to hear from a challenger brand like the "The Right Car" Similar to GWM. But i think you should judge the car on its merits not its country of origin. This will sell well in Aust and gain a cult following like the Small Suzuki has as it ticks so many boxes. The people who will be worried are the mainstream brands who will lose sales to this up and comer. Looking forward to more great content.

I'm in China, had my TANK300 for 6 months, love it. Seems a few differences between the Chinese and Aussie version. I have the 2.0LT Conqueror (top spec here) 1. The Chinese version doesn't have the weird af blinkers/indicators - they screwed you there. The blinkers stick up and down as you would expect here. 2. We have AutoNavi SatNav installed - it can be 3 finger swiped across to the main driver screen and controlled separately, so you can run two separate screens with GPS with different angles, or gps on the driver and cams on the main screen. 3. The seat belt in the Aussie version seems to have some weird plastic stuff added that rattles. 4. Comes with Cooper ATT/AT3s (swapped out for KO2s) 5. Comes with 2" tow receiver 3rd party aftermarket for parts here is pretty vibrant in China (Yunliang, TopFire etc), but I am really really hoping that this sells well in Aus and SA, that might get us some love from ARB, FrontRunner and others.

I've had the Tank 300 petrol ultra for a year now, It's one of the best cars I've ever driven. In fact Matt was instrumental in my decision in purchasing the Tank. The downside is the fuel consumption and the ELK keeps turning on everytime I get into the car (which I understand is a feautre in all new cars). The indicator stock can be annoying at first but you get a feel for it after while. With regards to quality my right rear tyre pressure keeps decreasing slightly faster than the other tyres. Not sure if it's a GWM thing or a tyre thing, haven't had time tot get it checked out as I live in remote WA. Early on I had some rocks lodged from trucks crack the top surface of my windshiled. Had it replaced with RAC. As for everything else it's been perfect. I've done over 15K and most of it is long distance on crappy country roads with some city driving and beach dune off roading. It's extremely smooth, extremely comfortable and enjoy getting in everytime. It's my meditation machine. Happy with my purchase so far. Will update this comment in another year.

I cant for the life of me figure out why they went with that indicator setup, had the same issue on the freeway. Upside, the rest of the tech is VERY nice for the price range, WAY better than all the utes I checked out as options for myself. From what I see though, Cannon is getting a very similar interior upgrade with the 2024 facelift, borrowed from the Tank300, which we may have to seriously consider for our 2nd car. I was seriously surprised how roomy and comfy it was for my frame (6'3 solid), head height was great too. Fuel usage isnt bad when you consider those numbers arent all that different to a diesel ute now, and diesel is way more expensive at the pump. Savage Tech seem to love it, so will have plenty of options to be kitted out with... We were told by a dealer the price will go up at the end of the year though, so may have to be a sooner rather than later but for many.

Great review Matt! The GWM Tank 300 would be completed wasted on me! Haha! I don't want to tow anything and I don't want to go offroad, which might explain my lack of adventures driving ability, however, this is the first time I've actually gone ... "Hey! This is bloody good" for a Chinese SUV. I absolutely don't need a vehicle like this, but now I'm even thinking this would look good in my garage! The GWM Haval Jolion and GWM Haval H6 have previously caught my eye, but not like the GWM Tank 300! I love the way it looks and I do consider this to be an affordable option in the Medium SUV segment. The elements that you don't like, I think can be overlooked, as you've said. It's just a shame that the spare wheel cover isn't colour coded to the rest of the vehicle and doesn't house the registration plate, like that on the outgoing Mitsubishi Pajero. The placement of the rear registration plate looks like an afterthought, as does the black spare wheel cover. Having said that though, I'm only nitpicking! Also, it's great that GWM decided to include a two tone alloy wheel design on the petrol version at least! One of my pet hates on the new cars these days, is black roofs, black allow wheels and then those stupid 'Black Packs' or 'Black Editions' ... back in my day anything black on the car was a no cost option and usually meant you were buying a povo spec car, which there is nothing wrong with that! Love some povo spec cars! I'm surprised you didn't mention one in particular Stellantis offering, the Jeep Wrangler when you mentioned other SUV's that the GWM Tank 300 passes some similarities with, though secretly, I can't wait for Mahindra to release the Thar here, just to really sick it up them! I'll give it 2 year max and Jeep will be long gone from the Australian market, unless they start cutting prices by $15k at least, which we both know won't be happening! They are a premium brand now, remember! I have seen two petrol versions on the road so far here in Adelaide, both in that Dusk Orange, one with personalised plates and the other with premium plates, so I hope we get to see a few different colour options on the roads! On a side note Matt, would you consider doing a video on some industry news, such as issues/elements that are making cars so expensive in Australia and what issues/elements are driving this? If you believe everything you watch on KZbin, the price of shipping and semiconductor chips has fallen a lot, yet the prices of vehicles continue to increase here. Not everyone can become a premium brand in Australia, with their premium pricing, so eventually something will have to give. There's only so many buyers in that segment of the market can consume that amount of vehicles at those 'premium' prices'. Cheers mate!
@therightcar Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the comments mate and I’m glad you found the review interesting and fun! As for the Jeep - it’s like $85k now, so it’s not competing at this level. Would you buy it ? Yes, I would as the value for money and the versatility of this vehicle is a perfect match for me - rather than buying a used alternative which has run out of warranty for example. As you say, it's a 'hybrid' of many designs but having been a long time owner of Landcruisers (just sold my '95 70 series) this wagon reminds me of them but is so much less expensive to replace. The Tank 7 year unlimited kms warranty and the fact that it's petrol rather than diesel also appeals as diesel here in NZ has Road User Charges which are penalising and have to be paid up front rather than petrol . I'm guessing any software glitches like lane keep assist being too agressive will be sorted out (rather than having to put tape over the front camera, which one dealer suggested to me !). Having watched a few off road videos of the Tank I'm very impressed so I'll be taking a test drive soon. I'd love to see a few more recent videos of driver experiences in Australia.

The payload is a dealbreaker. If you tow the full 2500kg in the hybrid (adding a tow bar and fuel), you have less than 100kg for you, your family, your stuff and any other accessories (bash plate, bull bar, roof racks). Even the 50kg increase in the petrol is too low for a family vehicle that is designed to go off-road. I can see a lot of naive owners finding out the hard way that they’re overloaded and not insured.

I really liked it but had some issues that would stop me buying, the fierce lane keeping, perhaps it could be permanently turned off, the engine which is of moderate power, but suffers from turbo lag, and the load carrying capacity of 400kg is too low for towing, where the ball weight of my trailer is 250kg. There is a diesel coming which could fix all these issues..

This is a 4x4 with a ladder frame chassis, the fuel economy is justified, i thought it would have been worse(like 12kpl). Between this and the 5 door Jimny I would probably choose this because its more sorted tech wise(not talking ADAS, no one cares about that). The only new peice of tech the 5 door Jimny gets its push button start which may not even be coming to outside markets. Plus you can probaly walk out the showroom with one of these as opposed to the Jimny which already has a 6 month waiting list in the home market.

You ask what to compare to. It looks nice in that colour you have been testing. Compare the Tank 300 to the Toyota Fortuna. Does the petrol model have enough grunt low-down revs compared to a diesel-powered 4x4 ??. The Tank 300 doesn't look to bad. Thanks for the video.
@therightcar Жыл бұрын
Thanks mate. Glad you liked the video. I have no doubt the Fortuner and Tank would be very different in terms of the drive experience. That diesel in the Toyota is grunty as, where the GWM’s engine is more refined and revvy.

Yes it would be great if they keep all the important physical buttons and knob like the old day is great! But now many new car is all built in one stupid infortainment. I hear you but the infotainment system is also pretty subjective in terms of appraisal when it comes to the features and usability. I liken it to Android phones. If you’re an Apple user, some of them are like a puzzle to work. Others are more intuitive. I don’t want to tell people what to think about the media systems if they have different expectations and wants/needs/tastes, so I don’t want to dwell down too deep on it. Thanks for the thoughts though!

@therightcar I'm an android user! So when it comes to smart tech, I'm very specific and picky. Last i drove MG HS +EV for work trip. The android auto Google map on mg infotainment got delayed 2 seconds after a few minutes following directions. And that's what bothered me.

Why don’t you include the Ssangyong Rexton as another option. We went with the Mahindra Scorpio. But 2 months since the Scorpio launch, I’m still waiting for the tow bar for the Scorpio. Something I need as I’m always towing a trailer behind our family car.

I didn’t include the Rexton because it’s a lot bigger and diesel+seven seats standard means it really appeals to a different buyer, in my mind. Costs a bit more too.

Good comprehensive review mate. Sub'd. In answer to your question...I would take a five year old Toyota over this for the same price. My reason is predominately for reliability, longevity, and durability. GWM do not use the best quality steel. They do not paint the body completely so corrosion will be a guaranteed future problem. In my opinion, GWM will ensure their vehicles are good for the warranty period and after that it will be on the owner. I am an aircraft mechanic who maintains my own vehicles so I am interested in the bits 'n bobs the general public are not aware of or care about ;) Thanks for a great review.
@wayneli4070 Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if I agree with you, especially on the quality of steel. Tank 300 has a 5-star ANCAP safety rating and there are videos of offroad accidents where it rolled down from tall sand dunes & mountains (because people go to town with this thing lol), the body maintained its original shape even after multiple extremely heavy flipped-over impacts and the passenger are well protected. I'd be worried if I'm sitting in a 5-year-old Prado.

I like your review format btw, really puts it in the buyers perspective and asks the questions of why you would want to own it, and you're also quite unbiased in your review instead of simply being lost in the hype (which seems to be quite common in these type of cars which mainly sell on passion and excitement like Jimny and Tank).
