This commentary is 150 years old...let's look inside!

What an incredible piece of history! I wanted to highlight that only the KJV was used when this commentary was published in 1871. To put it in context, the Civil War had ended just six years earlier, in 1865. The Revised Version (RV) wouldn’t start publication until 1881, continuing through 1894. This commentary was printed before the shift brought by modern Biblical scholarship and predates many Protestant beliefs that emerged in America (and unfortunately persist today). It was also published at the dawn of the Second Industrial Revolution, typically dated from 1870 to 1914. America was a vastly different place at that time. You should consider going live on KZbin weekly in 2025 and reading through the entire book!

I really appreciate this video, because sometimes I just want to pay homage to a printed product (especially an old Scottish one) without a decision outcome. Unlike so much of theology, which sort of requires taking sides, this is just honor and respect. Speaking of decisions, do you ever feel like the Lutheran view of Romans 7 is true in that universe, while the Wesleyan view is perfectly true in the Wesleyan universe? The older I get, the more I respect both men, both traditions, both churches, and in a weird way, the text speaks to me in a multiplicity of convictions, hounding me on both the level of "I will never be properly / finally holy until my body is raised to new life" and also "I have to get my act together because I want to live new life in new creation by the power of the Holy Ghost who lives in me, and not continue to let sin abound in my mortal body." One of the reasons I love being Episcopalian is the via media. Last month I was in Canterbury England and taking communion at the Cathedral for several days on a pilgrimage spending time in bookstores and in church everyday and night, and learned how the Anglican Archbishop takes turns between an anglo-Catholic like Rowan Williams, and an evangelical like Justin Welby. I think a church that allows for this kind of broad tolerance is refreshing after I spent years in a fundamentalist camp where we fostered micro-aggressions against every other church. I know this isn't for everybody, but I'm getting older, and I like the tone of this video.

Oh, you should find out how much it would cost to get it repaired! I've seen videos where they can do wonders, not just repairing spines and putting back pages, but even cleaning and repairing pages. I just don't know how expensive it is. It might be worth it for something like this, since it's already in pretty good shape starting out. I love old books!

I hate that I so recently discovered the Judges series and then Ruth and then... no more. I would have loved to see Samuel, Kings, & Chronicles, which always give me a headache trying to keep people and events straight. Stupid Covid ruined EVERYTHING.

I just received The Companion Bible and this is not a review but it’s definitely worth having just for the appendix pages in the back. It’s a large book but for the price, I’m glad I purchased it. Bullinger became known as a hyper dispensationalist but using with discernment there are many valuable gems in this Bible. Print is quite small too:
