Thank you for hosting another cool livestream Bro! The Oberstar is an awesome ship! Today was 84'F so it was nice! Training is super important. Under stress you revert to your baseline training and if you dont know where what is and how to use it you might not make it. I marvel at that bridge time after time! I have always wondered what do they do with all that limestone? I googled it! 😁 "What important compound does limestone yield? Limestone is a source of lime (calcium oxide), which is used in steel manufacturing, mining, paper production, water treatment and purification, and plastic production. Lime also has major applications in the manufacture of glass and in agriculture." I would not try swimming in that channel... What if you cant get out in time... ☠☠☠ I love their crane houses on these old vessels! They really are like an old school building. Wow she is low... 27 feet is low. I had the opportunity to go aboard the Oberstar in Detroit a few years ago. The view from atop the unloading tower is amazing. Another fun fact. In 2016 I was at the Whistles on the Water event in St Clair Mi. The original steam horns that were installed on the Oberstar were there at the event and connected to steam. During the event the Oberstar sailed by on the St Clair River, and a salute was exchanged between the Oberstar with her current air horns and her original steam horns.

In 2007 the Charles M. Beeghly was renamed to the James L. Oberstar. But days later Mr. Oberstar had the ship name plate repainted back to the Charles M. Beeghly. He wasn't ready yet for the ship to be renamed after him. But finally in 2011 Interlake decided it was going to rename the vessel again.....to the James L. Oberstar. I found this kind of interesting.

Your explanation of the steering pole was spot on! It’s technically called “Triangulation” in navigational terms. 27 feet of draft is interesting compared to the 55 feet draft of the huge Colliers (coal ships) in Baltimore Harbor. Thanks Mike! I visited Duluth on Monday and enjoyed watching the American Century come in up close from the breakwater lighthouse.. Afterwards my brother and I spent some time in the museum on the side of the CG building. It was very interesting- you should do a video about the museum, everyone would enjoy knowing about it.

Good morning Mike , hope you and the family are all well. Just had another stint in hospital, so playing catch up with all the vids. You like fun facts about all the ships .. Remember when you filmed the "Great Republic" , back in May , well when the "Original" one was launched in 1853, Great Republic was the largest wooden ship in the world. She shared this title with another American-built ship, the steamship Adriatic. She was also the largest full-rigged ship ever built in the United States. She was built by Donald McKay for trade on his own account to Australia. Just as she was completing loading in New York for her first commercial trip, she was involved in a disastrous fire. She was scuttled to try to save the hull, with only limited success. McKay decided to abandon the wreck to his insurers, who sold the damaged hull to new owners, who rebuilt her with three decks instead of four. She was employed on trans-Atlantic and California routes, with a period under contract to the French government for the Crimean War. She was never used on Australian routes.

Hey friend!!!!!! The Aerial Lift Bridge goes up early to ensure there are no mechanical issues, the worry is what if a ship is close to the bridge and it stops going up because of an issue? These huge ships take a long time to stop. The ship could crash into it. It’s a incident prevention measure essentially. 👍⛴️

What does three long and two short blasts mean?

There have been a few questions about the boat and bridge signal horns when the boats are entering and leaving the Port of Duluth. In most cases, once radio communication with the bridge has been established, use of the boat and bridge sound signals are not necessary and operation of the sound signals is left up to the captains. Often, boats will not use the loud horns after dark as a courtesy to city residents. So, most often when you hear the customary whistle/horn-blowing sequence of "long-short-short" it is a friendly salute to the Port of Duluth from the ship captain and is responded to by the lift bridge operator with the same sequence. The Master Salute is an upgraded more formal whistle/horn salute. That is “long-long-long-short-short.” While the famous sound may be a courtesy, it has long been part of the nautical tradition of this great inland sea port.
