As a coach builder with over 40 years experience of doing the same thing, I would advise mounting the body on a straightening frame to avoid body distortion. A straightening frame can be made from heavy RSJ section bolted together to form an oblong, narrower than the body but longer. The frame is placed on axle stands, screw type stands are infinitely adjustable, the frame is adjusted with the help of a good laser level to ensure that it is absolutely flat, the body is then carefully lowered onto the frame. Custom adjustable clamps are then made to bolt the body to the frame, once bolted, you can gut the shell knowing that the windows and doors will still fit after you have finished. I'm not trying to tell you how to do the job, it's clear you know what you are doing but from looking at the video I suspect that there is a degree of distortion already that will be impossible to correct once the shell is welded up.
@yorkshirecarrestoration
@yorkshirecarrestoration Жыл бұрын
Hi Shane, Yes you are correct, these is distortion in the car already. Even before we started stripping the car, it was already distorted as we think it has a front corner collision. We just needed space and time to make the jig but it certainly is a good idea. Thanks the the suggestion and taking the time to comment!

The total lack of quality in the steel used to produce these cars is your main problem ,I had a FIAT with similar rust issues. To become a new MOT you had to weld every year, that´s how it became a patchwork piece. Best of luck restoring it.

Dude, I did a to frame, 66 roadster, took me buying 3 whole uni-body's to get enough parts to fix the floor pans, rockers, and anyplace else rusted out. I worked on these cars when they were new, easy then, but when all rusted like this it sucks.

I'm old enough to remember Datsun cars.. Those that hit our shores after travelling via ship and being exposed to all of that lovely salty sea air😂 What could go wrong?? Well actually quite a lot could go wrong, very wrong indeed. In fact plenty of them needed some sort of welding done at first MOT 😱if that wasn't bad enough Datsun had the nerve to give their cars a 5 year rust warranty that basically wasn't worth the paper it was written on. It had more holes than the cars did. I'm amazed that any Datsun cars from that time still exist in our country.
@yorkshirecarrestoration
@yorkshirecarrestoration Жыл бұрын
Its the sea air, the salt on the roads and the lack of protection from factory that destroy the Datsuns. Welding at first MOT is crazy!!! We will get this one back on the road in no time :)

If I said holy shit I guess I wouldn't be far off a good description. I haven't seen a motor this bad for many years , admittedly it was many years ago I used to do a lot of patch repairs for mot failures but I will admit I did cut out as much of the rust as I could . I have to take me hat off to you tackling something this bad but I'm sure it's going to be a lot better after you graft some new steel where it's most needed . I've just watched the previous video and I'm going to whack the sub button so I can follow along and see actually how bad this was . Thanks for videoing the process and good luck on the advent calendar panels ...

All this rust proves one thing...cars are made as cheaply as possible with as little thought given to longevity...just sell it and then sell a new one in a few years when the "old" one starts falling apart.a bit of galvanizing or some zinc coatings in that area would have kept this destruction to a minimum.

Datsuns company policy was to scrap the car after three years. And you go by a new car. It creates jobs and you have no maintenance charge. That's why the metal was so thin. I did my Bodywork aprentership when that car was brand new.. about 1980. These cars was rusty after three years. But I think that car been in the ocean. Or dam close. The question in asking is. Is it safe to drive with all these pieces welded together. I'm talking if it get into a accident. I've drove at 140 mph in a 240 z. I was a passenger. Scary stuff. The owner must have deep pockets. Lol. Good luck. 👍

I think you are right! Scrap it after 3 years and buy new! its unfortunate though! This think mist have been parked in a lake or something ha! With out repairs we match or better the OEM spec. We use thicker sheet steel so it will be good once all fixed up! Thanks!
