Paul Saladino is the opposite of the stereotypical doctor promoting the carnivore diet. He sees the diet in physical, mental and even spiritual terms. On this episode of Health Theory with Tom Bilyeu, Paul Saladino goes into nitty-gritty detail on the various levels and types of the carnivore diet. So he starts with the simple steak and eggs diet and ends with hunting, butchering and eating the entire animal. He also describes the philosophy and science behind the diet, and ends up taking Tom on a fascinating intellectual journey where they discuss getting in touch with their animal nature, spirituality, and becoming a better person.
SHOW NOTES:
Paul explains why he spent so much time exploring, and is so curious [1:38]
Paul describes his interest in Buddhism and Eastern philosophy [3:02]
Paul and Tom discuss the sense of awe, and how that drove exploration [5:16]
Paul shares why he returned to the medicine and what disappointed him about it [7:18]
Paul explains why nutrition is so important in preventive medicine [9:11]
Tom and Paul attempt to understand the “calories in calories out” viewpoint [10:43]
Paul describes anti-nutrients, micro-nutrients and why they matter [13:45]
Paul breaks down the carnivore diet [18:33]
Paul and Tom discuss how auto-immune diseases may be caused by gut issues [20:58]
Paul explains why he thinks we are evolutionarily carnivores [23:40]
Paul advocates that eating meat made our earliest ancestors human [26:00]
Paul describes the nitty-gritty of how to put the carnivore diet into practice [32:06]
Paul explains the basic carnivore diet of meat, eggs and liver [40:40]
Paul describes the second level of the carnivore diet, which organs to add next [42:16]
Paul and Tom discuss why they wished a vegan diet worked [42:54]
Paul and Tom discuss getting in touch with their own animal nature [45:03]
Paul shares the most important change people need to make [49:40]

Whether you buy into the carnivore diet or not you have to love this interview. It's honest and open and the Dr is open about many areas of conjecture, which points out there are obvious areas not scientifically proven. There's a lot written about eating "grass fed" beef, drinking milk from "grass fed" cows, etc and the interesting thing is that these animals are eating a plant based diet. It would therefore seem that plants have a fair amount nutritional value. If that's true then can't a plant based diet work for humans? At one point in the interview Tom mentioned that at some point just do something, whether meat or plant based and see how it affects your body and mind. We're all different and what works for one won't work for another and vice versa. As noted by some others in the comments, it's confusing for most of us to figure out what's best. I eat mostly plant based and I feel great on it and have plenty of energy. I rarely have issues with illness of any kind. I do practice mindfulness, I meditate, I do yoga and a variety of fitness routines, as well as play tennis 4-6 hours a week. Maybe it's a combination of all those things that have been beneficial to me. I'm with Tom in that I'd have to have a very, very compelling reason to kill an animal for food. I do love the idea that the Dr feels a spiritual connection to eating the carnivore diet. Overall a great interview and a lot of food for thought (pun intended).

That's a fair question to ask. As Dr. Saladino will say, ruminants including cows have 4 stomachs; they are specifically designed for breaking down and eating plants! Us humans however are designed closer to carnivores, and have been eating a primarily animal-based diet since our ancestral ages. Plants were not available to eat in the winter, and fruits only in the summer. Plants are loaded with anti-nutrients, requiring processing such as fermenting, boiling, etc. to break down some of these chemicals. Meat is packed with vitamins plants don't have in equally biodegradable forms. Yes there's individual variation within an animal-based diet, absolutely. But plants don't want us to eat them, and we are always better off not doing so.

If I had watched this 6 months ago, I wouldn't have been able to hear it either. Paul Saladino is coming up quick and I'm stoked about it. This guy is such a champ. The most knowledgeable personality in the carnivore space, positive, enthusiastic, polite, intelligent, doesn't spend all his time hating on other diets. He's giving the carnivore diet some real credibility. Super compelling evolutionary argument from 23:00-30:00

I enjoy the fact that Tom brings in guests from very diverse viewpoints. My primary concerns that I felt were inadequately addressed have to do with the various bacterias, parasites and other things one can get from consuming raw meats. There are reason our ancestors didn't live to be very old, and some of those reasons were glossed over. Just a brief list of things you can get from raw meats: Beef liver -> Enterohemorrhagic E. coli O157 which can exist inside the meat, and not just on the surface, toxocariasis caused by a type of round worm (can also come from chicken, lamb, cow, etc). Sheep, Beef liver -> Fascioliasis parasite. Pork (meat, liver and organs)) -> Hepatitis E virus, salmonella, Campylobacter Seafood -> parasite Anisakis, Clonorchis, Opisthorchis are liver parasites from fish, crabs, crayfish can cause liver and bile duct disease. This is just from a few minutes of online research. If this guest is invited back, I'd like to hear his strategies to avoiding all of these without cooking. Again, there are reasons our ancestors lived less than a full length life. If Tom wants to live forever... he may want to consider the ramifications of this particular diet, which could lead to a shorter life than he seeks. This seems to be very much a case of buyer beware. That said, I look forward to continuing to hear from guests with unique and unorthodox perspectives, even though I may not find their information compelling.

So whenever I hear about the Carnivore diet and the evolution philosophy of it, I always wonder if we've considered that even if our ancestors ate mostly meat, does that mean it was good for them? Did it contribute to their shorter life cycle? I eat meat, but when I study plant based diets, the results appear to show impacts on our health that are more positive. Especially when talking about Cancer, Alzheimers, etc... Just curious what Dr. Saladino thinks about the studies done by Dr. Ornish and others.

Your considering epidemiology studies correlating vegetarian diets to longer lifespans; this data is always fundamentally flawed if your familiar with epidemiology. Also, consider that assuming our ancestors had shorter life spans is a massive overgeneralization. Infection played a big role in shorter lifespan, and there is evidence that human lifespan in healthy individuals across all of time has been fairly constant anyways, despite common belief.

all of those diseases you listed are quite easily confirmed as a result of insulin resistance (IE carb intolerance), so no, meat isn't a culprit, or even a suspect.

well when i was young, my grandfather had chickens so when we visited him he would get me a fresh egg and my Dad would pierce a hole in the bottom and a bit bigger hole in the top and i would suck on the egg until it was gone...it was soooo good...first the white would come through and then finally the yolk and that was so good...free range fresh raw egg we ate them all the time. i never saw him wash them and i dont ever recall my parents worried about salmonella either.

"it's so hard to date" ... bruh how do you even go to a restaurant and order with that diet? So many interesting takeaways for sure! But if your a foodie and enjoy the art of food creation ... how do you do that with this diet when everything is raw? None the less I appreciate his passion and looking at alternatives beyond traditional western medicine.

When I discussed this with the allergist, he firmly said that it was not an allergy ....... I am always on the quest of being as healthy as I can. I have rheumatoid arthritis and 7 years ago I went vegan and all my symptoms went away. I got off meds. However, due to stress and other factors, I started eating junk every now and then and the pain came back. I really want to try this meat/fruit diet, but I have read so much about how protein is hard to digest and it activates an autoimmune response, causing flareups. I would love to ask him about this. Can I eat beef with RA? I feel so overwhelmed with information.

There is something about liver that saturates our body with nutrients more than a normal steak. I can eat a massive steak but I can only eat so much liver and I’m satiated. It’s quite interesting.

I agree that killing an animal can be an intensely spiritual experience. I felt bad about taking its life but was also excited to have good meat. I apologized and thanked it. I thought about the deer's life every time I ate it. The last morning it had, its life growing up in those mountains. I felt like my soul was somehow connected to that animals spirit. I was moved to tears when eating it months after I killed it with profound bitter sweet gratitude. (I'm not an overly emotional person). I have no spiritual connection to any cow I ever ate. Sad.

That's interesting, but I have some issues with this... I don't like meat that much! In the other side I have some questions regarding the impact of producing so much meat (if we were all carnivore) on the environment. Can we talk about that?!
