My mental health is at its worst right now and my body isn't much better either. So, I am sitting here, taking notes of everything Dr. Amen said because I'm only 24 and I have so much time left to live. I want to live a good life and I'm determined to make that happen. Starting with improving my mental and physical health.

Hang in there. The twenties are difficult but you will learn a lot about yourself and gain confidence. Growing up takes a long time. I had terrible anxiety and felt miserable for all of my twenties but things eventually got better. I’m 59 now and it’s all a distant memory now. Life gets better in your 30’s for most people.

Fish, he recommends fish for your fats? yikes! The undisputed best food for your brain is and always shall be. HEMP SEED: THE MOST NUTRITIONALLY COMPLETE FOOD SOURCE IN THE WORLD. All of your Omega 3's 6's, and 9's in the proper proportion for for the human body, and since your brain is fat, and thoughts are electricity, it's a good idea to get the best fat with the highest pi electron cloud. In addition Dr. Neil Bernard has many great talks into the Chicago study on cognitive decline and diet, conducted by Harvard and Rush. The conclusion was cheese was causing the b-amyloid plaques in the brain that led to a 30 x increase risk of alzheimer's. Additionally in the study people who ate meats obviously had massive heart problems, and greatly lowered life expectancy. Kind of the same conclusion the China Study came to about meat and dairy being the primary triggers to cancers. As far as his cannabis research, it's quite laughable, at one point he uses as an example the brain of a man that has been smoking cannabis, pointing to that as the main cause of his brain degeneration, and then less than a minute later he speaks of the dangers of pesticides in foods, but never comes to the realization of the coloration that the great majority of the cannabis people have been smoking for the last 60 years is heavily contaminated with pesticides, fertilizers, and antifungals. Something that is clearly shown in many studies to lead to neurological problems. Less of a scientific method and controlled tests being employed, and more of a correlation causation fallacy in logic.

Professor Science that’s not entirely true! The omega 3‘s in hemp aren’t epa and dha. It only contains ALA, which is a precursor of dha and epa. It needs to be converted in dha and epa, which the body has its difficulty with. Approx 10 percent at max can be converted into epa and 1 percent into dha. Those are the omega 3 fatty acids which have all the health benefits! Epa for inflammation and dha for cognitive functions and vision.

He's downplaying the role that sugar plays in the lives of people BIG TIME. With sugar, it's more than about losing mommy/holiday get together issues, SUGAR GIVES A HIGH THAT FEELS GREAT(for some the high is equated with joy, love, and affection), and add to that the texture of the sugary food may add to the high and filling whatever empty part a person is using the sugar to fill within their minds/heart/soul INSTEAD of the healthier alternatives.

Don't agree about the video game part, I think that depends entirely on what kind you are playing, some have been shown to have cognitive benefits and in fact grow new brain cells.
@TheNordicHunter
@TheNordicHunter 5 жыл бұрын
anab0lic Yeah, I’m not completely on board with not playing video games. I think it needs to be broken down to time spent and what’s being played. If a child or adult is consuming their whole day play games, then yes it affects their body physically and they miss out in vitamin D so it also affects their brain. But if one plays brain challenging games that make you think constantly and limit that time so they get out for a walk or go socialize, then how is it any worse than doing a crossword puzzle or reading for hours? If it’s a mindless game that just requires tapping, then it’s a waste of time and is slowly deteriorating the body and brain and fueling depression, anxiety, and obesity.
@Eimantasks
@Eimantasks 5 жыл бұрын
It does help with motor functions, hand eye coordination, temporary memory, reaction times, but at the same time it overstimulates reward centers, producing too much dopamine, which in turn reduces receptors in brain for Dopamine. Which makes you unmotivated, bored, in some cases depressed. It overstimulates sensory brain centers, exhausting nervous system possibly causing stress, tension, ticks. What about loosing gray matter in prefrontal cortex? Same as loosing gray mater in hippocampus while gaining gray matter in the stratus... you get some benefits while harming other parts. It's not really a rocket science, it's enough to go and google, read through research. But what is interesting that not all research talka bout it, some acknowledge the damage others go silent about it. Some research is done and sponsored by gaming industry so.... make whatever you want of it. What I am saying, Justifying games is tempting... they are fun/engaging. one of most popular relaxation and fun sources, but the fact is that our brain is ancient and we don't yet understand fully how it affects us, and not all brains are similar, some are more sensitive to that stimulation others can deal with it better, but it was proven to be dangerous in some cases.

My daughter developed severe anxiety after her divorce, she came to live with her mother and me (her) dad, she had a type of agorophobia and lived on the couch, I shared a tool with her that had set me free of a similar problem when I was in highschool. This is the discussion: Anxiety is an emotion that modulates "care, protection" for one's life, if it has stuck wide open for some reason you have to realize it is up to you to tone it down, it is in effect trying to over-protect you and often shuts you down mentally and sometimes physically, example; she could not drive out of our housing area onto the main highway due to insecure thoughts, that meant her mind was keeping her home, keeping her safe, once she realized what was transpiring she gradually worked through her fears and used that perspective to free her complete life, she actually took a trip a year later to Nepal, liked the culture and volunteered her services helping earth quake victums for almost a year. ( as a mechanic I never use a tool too big for the job). Anxiety is a tool used by the mind to accommodate you not to lock you down. Be thankful to your God for the kindness He has shown you and your loved ones every day, say it verbally to Him, He loves the fruit of your lips, your Praises to Him.

This happened to me too. Agoraphobia and stayed in the couch and furthest corner in my bed to feel safe. I saw a trauma therapist that taught me the same to do opposite of the bondage that agorophbia kept me in. I begin taking long walks in the sun and listening to podcast that help me feed my spirit according to my beliefs/faith. It helped me. Getting out of the house and interacting with others helped me. Deliberately choosing to believe in the power of God/Jesus healed me. Thank you for sharing this comment. I found myself in it and I know it's confirmation from God that I'm hearing from Him through you. 🙏🏾

There’s a striking different mindset from northeastern people comparison wise to southern culture . Also, my background is European with parents raised on a farm and great cooks . Both my parents are slender and fit and we didn’t grow up eating dessert everyday . Dessert was once a week or once a month . I never craved desserts . Southern culture believe fat is cute . They don’t see it , they’re literally brain washed , it’s sad . Southerners need a wake up call , that’s my take . The young generation of southerners are moody and irrational and irritable and the young generation party way too much in their 20’s and 30’s, and during the week work and then go out partying . It’s crazy .

Tips for a healthy brain : Use it or lose it Improve your mental fitness by regularly reading, learning, or doing activities that make you think, such as crossword puzzles. All of these help stimulate your nerve cells, and may even lead to the development of new brain cells. Protect your head Always wear a helmet when playing contact sports. Be sure to buckle up when you get in the car. Both of these can go a long way when it comes to avoiding brain injuries. Exercise Doing regular cardio workouts stimulates blood flow throughout your body, including your brain. Quit smoking While smoking is bad for your overall health, it can also lead to cognitive decline. Listen to your thoughts Try to check in from time to time with your thoughts or feelings. Keeping a diary is a good way to get into this habit. Look for any thought patterns or emotions that seem to be impacting your day-to-day life. They could be a sign of an underlying, treatable psychological condition.

if business actually cared about their workers' health, and health costs; lunch hours would be a full 60 minute hour instead of 30 minutes, on-site food offerings would consist of more than vending machines, vacations would be a minimum of four weeks, and companies would make it easier for employees to commute on bike/foot; and this would be standard not just for the royalty in the executive suite, but also down to the lowliest warehouse, call center, and even the contractors. but apart from their own selves executive suite, they don't care. so enjoy the status quo until you can get something better going for yourself.

This should truly be the standard for psychiatric evaluation and treatment. We are in such a wellness crisis, and it is my prayer that this country moves towards these practices and education, so that we can actually heal and that other nations stop trying to follow us down this terrible health degrading hole for the sake of making money off of our citizens.

And u see Dr Daniel Amen ignore saying a word abt cannabis as its not safe or healthy way to be exposing your brain with continous external dopamine. Your body has its own cannabanoid system and you can produce your own marijuana called anandamide u need to get in touch with your life being real and sober. Plus all his research points u want to forget abt marijuana unless u have terminal cancer and dying soon then u can get high and escape reality.

It's hard to take a medical professional serious, who tries to sell me his products (books, nutritional supplements, services). Here in Europe part of a professional conduct in the medical field is the separation between medical practice and commercial ventures. Also, most of Dr Amen's 'revelations' are really trivial. Maybe his books can serve as a good summary for people who have absolutely no previous knowledge at all, but that's it.

I was so excited about this guy that I tried to set up an appointment in one of his clinics a day after watching a bunch of his videos, I figured it would be so difficult to get an appointment. I went online and submitted an inquiry and to my surprise, I got a call almost immediately. Which I found weird. So I did what I should have done first and did some research... His clinics are a complete scam. The clinics charge $5k for the whole process, but I read that this process leaves a lot to be desired. I read review after review of people who got scammed, and then I read that his approach is not even peer-reviewed. Such a disappointment. 😞

Great interview!! Many thanks for bringing it to us. I'm particularly interested in the role of the cerebellum in day to day life and overall brain health - that's simply NOT a topic you see very much of in programs and general approaches to overall mental health!! Kudos to Dr. Daniel for pointing out some very common-sense facts such as avoid a diet too low in healthy fats (such as found in fatty fish, for example), and the dangers to brain health of high blood sugar and being sedentary.... also, bravo for saying out loud what many have suspected: "The more screen time, the smaller the brain." - and I would chime in, the less creativity. I also like that he points out that "weed" is NOT a healthy herb as is the fad to claim these days, but that it still shouldn't be villainized and made strictly illegal. I like the cut of this man's jib!! He makes a lot of sense overall. If I had a caveat or beef to make about his "program" is that it under-plays the SOCIAL aspect of overall health: we live in a society that is increasingly isolated, for both younger AND older people. We are primarily a social species: we need the company of others, we need at least one good friend to share our lives with: someone we don't have to impress or keep secrets from. We need TOUCH also - the average person in our society is touch-starved: reassuring, normal touching is a BIG component of most "primitive" societies, yet for all the wrong reasons we tend to avoid even such civilized things as friendly hugs.

Right now I am studying neuroscience with psychology therefore I thought the above video maybe useful, however there is no structure to this conversation. It's hard to follow what you both are talking about, you are for sure asking the right questions but we are not getting the right answers. So what are the 11 risk factors that destroys your brain?
@baronmeduse
@baronmeduse 4 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I don't even know how they enumerated these 'factors'. The interviewee seems to me to be a chancer repeating basic ideas and largely promoting his expensive scanning practise. Wow, who'd have thought contact sports would have a negative impact! Well, most doctors, so not particularly new information. The sugar discussion is just a surface reference to John Yudkin's book: 'Pure, White & Deadly'. Wonder why he talked about magnesium and GABA as being so marvellous for depression? Couldn't possibly be because he sells expensive versions of thsese supplements could it...? Con man.

Also do Mt and I love fighting, for over a year been doing some serious research on the brain and realised these are best for your brain: fasting, fatty foods nuts/seeds, meats, fish, avocado, supplements, eggs Good low glycemic carbs :root vegetables, oats, barley, wild rice, fruits, vegetables, maca root Proteins: lean meat, eggs, spirulina, nuts, seeds, clean protein powder (preferably plant like hemp, peas protein, NOT SOY) Eat diet to increase hormones such as GH, Testosterone and lower estrogen(avoid soy, flax, inflammatory oils, stress, alcohol, SUGAR) I wanna try : hyperbaric oxygen therapy, research that its great. Good brain foods are obviously Fats carbs proteins, but also things like lions mane mushroom, chaga mushrooms, spirulina, hbot, high antioxidants food such as berries, dark chocolate, cacoa, black seed oil, shilajit Increase blood flow with hiit training, heat therapy, certain foods like ginger, watermelon, cloves Anti inflammation : no sugar, turmeric with black pepper in hot water, green tea, omega 3 in fish nuts seeds etc There's probably more but truly focus on these things, eat healthy, exercise, and do these techniques

I 've always been inquisative & contemplative by nature: all of my life......and l was aware of small & large things....stuff that other people never seemingly thought about. I've been aware l am natural "belly breather" all my life....l am now 66 years old. I think l became aware of it (my natural life-long "belly breathing" when l was in 2nd grade...and l noticed my ribcage seemed larger by comparison to other kids. I wondered about it a bit when l was young.....but belly breathing was ALWAYS my natural breathing. I've also been an RN/heathcare provider all my adult life. I believe my life-long "natural belly breathing" has been part of my overall fitness.....and the constant use of abdominal muscles for moving air has resulted in natural muscle tone.... almost like a "mini sit- up: with every breath....without even thinking about it....keeps my abdominal muscles naturally fit, flat & toned. I do sometimes gain & lose some weight: but never gain abdominal fat internally.....abdomilalfat tends to not become intrinsic/internal (where it would be far less healthy to internal metabolism & organs). My family also has very good longevity (several haved lived to be over 100 to 105 years). I belive an active lfestyle & doing activities naturally instead of always by "machinery" is paort of the enjoyment of life that keeps us mentally & physically fit. Being "one with our nature" is tremendously important. BTW.....I LOOK DECADES YOUNGER THAN MY YEARS....NATURALY... FROM GOOD HABITS. Just some thoughts: from my decades of "thoughts & noticing" I played brass instruments as a youngster....and noticed that my natural belly-breathing was a big asset in plaing trombone: l was able to push air and hold long/loud notes easier thn other kids. When l was in adolescence l played tennis....and later on l became an endurance cyclist for decades. Now in recent years

TABLE TENNIS is complex, challenging sport played at lightning speed & incredible ball spins & which very few Americans have ever seen played at a high level. It's NOT PING PONG (even though the table & ball are the same), which is played with very cheap equipment at a very low level by children & adults in their basements. How can you look at someone playing and tell if they're a table tennis or a ping pong player? Here's a tip: if their feet are moving constantly and they're putting their whole body into the shots: that's table tennis! If their feet are planted in one spot and they're slashing at the ball with only arm movement, that's ping pong... that's OK but it won't get you the massive brain improvements Dr. Amen is talking about.
