In today’s video, I cover a Chinese battery electric SUV, the Chery eQ5. Unlike the Wuling MINI EV which was a tiny city EV with limited range but an amazing price, this Chery eQ5 is a legitimate advanced electric vehicle with some impressive technology at an attractive price.
If you aren’t aware, China is the world’s largest car market over 25 million units sold in 2019. The US sold 17 million units in 2019. China also has the world’s fastest and largest growing market for electric vehicles. Plug in electric vehicles accounted for over 1.2 million units in China which was 3 times more than the US.
There are over 400 electric vehicle manufacturers in China currently. Chery is a major vehicle player in China with over 450,000 units sold in 2019. The Chery eQ5 also called the Big Ant is a compact electric crossover sport utility vehicle. They probably need to change the Big Ant name if it were to be exported to the US or Europe as it doesn’t quite translate well as a luxury vehicle name. The eQ5 was launched in September of 2020.
I know this is a car and not a television but I bet you didn’t know that the top 2 of the 4 market share leaders in television sets sold in the world are Chinese companies TCL and HiSense. The same thing for the cellphone market with Huawei and Xiaomi taking the #2 and #3 spot in worldwide market share. Don’t count out China in the EV market.
I’m not saying that Chery will be the next Toyota but don’t think that Chinese EVs are just cheap junk that won’t be competitive. They’ll be extremely competitive as the Chery eQ5 shows.
What do you think about the Chery eQ5? And let me know in the comments whether you would buy a Chinese EV if it were available for sale in your country? And why or why not? Thanks for watching and if you enjoyed this video, please give it a like. See you in the next video.

I'd be interested if it had a bit better driver assist features. In addition to adaptive cruise control I want lane keeping, at least on major roads, and collision-avoidance braking. Take the monotony out of highway and stop/go driving. I'd really like full self driving but I'd settle for a less complete feature set for now.

Chinese cars are really coming on. Pricing is always a tricky one - by the time you add costs associated with modifying the cars to meet local safety regs etc., transport, import taxes etc, you can probably add 25% to the price - still competitive, but getting close to the existing competition.

I am living in China. But you will wonder why local people prefer Tesla or Toyota Hybrid rather than all local EV. The answer is reliability. If you know the answer, you will know it is a toys only.
@worldcitizen7898
@worldcitizen7898 3 жыл бұрын
I am also living in China. Local people do not prefer Tesla or Toyota Hybrid (in fact Toyoto does not yet make a full EV, only a Hybrid, and their upcoming EV is in fact licensed technology from their new China partner, BYD) . China EV now outsell Tesla and Toyota Hybrid. The Wuling Hongguang Mini EV is top seller in China the past several months. There are so many Chinese EV models now, if you add them together they outsell Tesla handily. With more and more high quality models introduced every month, this trend will continue. Nio, Li Xiang, Xpeng, BYD are all making excellent EV cars. These are not at all toys. I remember when Apple iPhone was the top seller in China. Now they are #5 behind Chinese brands Huawei, Xioami, Oppo and Vivo. Tesla will find themselves in a similar situation in China soon.
@Kukaboora
@Kukaboora 2 жыл бұрын
@ Ringo, There will always be a segment of well to do people that are snobs. The Tesla buyers. Paying higher prices for the prestige, for the right to separate themselves from the poorer mass. How many Tesla fires has been reported in China and how many BYD EV fires has been reported in China. At least five for Tesla and none for BYD. That alone would tell me BYD EV is safer regarding battery fires.

This goes to show you that the other manufacturers are charging way too much. There may be a good reason for the larger price tag but when you got a car with a 70 or 88 KW battery and it's under $35K this tells you the Chinese market is doing well. It's a car many can afford and it doesn't look bad and gets some really good range.

Unlikely, without having their own assembly plant(s) they'd be faced with having to tack on import duties to the purchase price. By opening up assembly plants, they provide more local jobs and get tax incentives. This is what Toyota, Honda did in the '80s.

For a Chinese EV manufacturer to be successful, in North America, they need to, not only open dealerships, but create assembly plants in the countries. If they don't, they'll be subject to import duty fees that will negate the lower build costs. You can find KIA, Hyundai, Toyota, Subaru, Volvo, etc. dealerships so getting service isn't a pain. What will happen if your Chery, XPeng, NIO or BYD breaks down and you need to wait a month for a part?? Who will have the ability to diagnose issues?? They won't sell. Edit: As an example, the new VW ID.4 will be built in America, not brought in from Germany.

I enjoy value along with price when shopping. Just like most products today, point of origin plays less of role as long as quality is maintained. Based on what I know of Chinese manufacturing, they have no problem with quality control (U.S. firms must also think so). They know, as businessman, that once a customer is lost due to bad quality, that customer can and will influence others not to buy a particular product.
