Thanks for another spectacular lesson Tom👍 Please explain the difference in your backswing with only one plane vs a more traditional like Clay ballard teaches. I have been taking things from both of you guys and this is one thing that I constantly ponder? He's not as much of a Justin Thomas but still goes up with arms and hands a little higher. Does having a higher swing give you more power or is it necessary? Thanks!

This is the Best Swing instruction Tip I've seen in 50 years of Playing Golf. We've all been told 1 Piece Takeaway is key to to a good swing and to keep the Clubhead out in front of us, but then they (others) say things like put a towel in your Right Armpit (Completely Restrictive) ruining the rest of the swing. Everyone I read including Jack Nicklaus say the first move in Takeaway (Tom says 3 feet; Jack N says at least first 18 Inches) is the most important part of the swing. I've now tried this Tip and for the first time in 50 years I can feel my (trunk/hands/Clubhead) are connected and yet free enough through Impact. Previously making a 1 Piece takeaway always felt contrived/manufactered and not natural - this does work and done properly feels right.

No doubt the best tip out there for mid to high handicappers. I saw this same tip elsewhere and have been implementing it last month or so. 5:09 really helped me - after the takeaway, just keep going without thinking. I've been having major problems with backswing lately and also hinging for awhile now. I just practiced a low and around the belt takeaway and just kept the hands going, and the club hinged perfectly on its own. We'll see if I can do it with the ball there, but this helps a lot and looks great in the mirror already.
@SagutoGolf Жыл бұрын
YES! If we pre-establish the connections properly in the setup and have a foundational base that facilitates a full centered turn without restriction, then we can learn to entrust the motion to the big muscles and allow the arms, wrists, hands, and club to simply go along for the ride and respond accordingly as if on autopilot. The power accumulators - including a proper full wrist hinge - will then naturally load and fire with no contrived manipulations or precise timing necessary, thereby returning the face to the position pre-established at address. It's called "giving up control to gain control", and it's the formula for consistently blissful ball striking and seemingly effortless power. I hope this backswing key performs well for you! Tom

Cool video Tom, would you agree that a cupped left wrist at the top not only makes it harder to square the club but also robs a ton of power since it has to somehow go from cupped to flat at impact which slows it down? An analogy would be if you try to backhand slap someone's face starting with a cupped wrist impact is much slower than back hand slapping someome starting with a bowed or flat wrist. Anyone can try it.

I just got back from the range today and once in a while I accidentally did this move and absolutely smoked the ball. Since I typically did the incorrect takeaway (rolling the hands open), doing it this way felt almost like I was closing the club face. TOM, Great tip. I accomplish this by swinging the club on my backswing with the shaft resting on the outside of my left index finger , (knuckle)? ( you have to maintain the correct left hand grip pressure) . When I feel my wrist cock i reverse my swing with the pressure moving to the outside of my right index finger ( knuckle) throughout the downswing. Its amazing how my right shoulder replaces my left shoulder. As I keep practicing I can feel my swing: legs, hips, shoulders swinging the clubhead. When watching the pro golfers on TV I'm understanding their swings which in turn helps me. Hopefully I'm making sense explaining my progress? Thanks, Walt )

I truly appreciate your kind words and support, Daniel, and I'm thrilled for your improvement!! Mr. Hogan timelessly delivers phenomenal instructional value, right?! But there are just so many misconceptions about Hogan’s swing out there - particularly within the realm of misunderstood or misapplied instruction - that have sadly relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of chronic frustration. I'm doing my best here to clear these up one by one and put an end to this madness by taking what Mr. Hogan conveys in the “Five Lessons” book as his "feels", applying it to the reality of what he actually did in his swing, and translating it into something we all - including myself - can learn well from. Because if we can get Hogan right there are tremendously effective swing keys to be garnered!! Thanks again for sharing your success here, and also for pointing your buddies to SagutoGolf!! Tom this is the single most important movement in golf & anyone that pays attention to this very simple & straightforward move will save themselves 30yrs of golfing nightmares. The deliberate manipulating of the hands in both hinging & cocking (then unhinging & uncocking) creates a lottery for ball striking & clubface control. The R wrist `wedge' that you explain is kept right from setup to top of backswing & completely thru & past impact (with body rotation) is the ant's pants to great ball striking. By taking your arms & R/wrist 'wedge' straight back parallel you do not even vaguely hinge nor cock your wrists...they will move correctly without you deliberately forcing them to do so.

@SagutoGolf3 жыл бұрын
Hi Johnny, This is different from the Moe Norman type of single-plane swing in which thicker grips may be suggested. I would only say in this regard that your grips should be matched your hand size, and beyond that just make sure you've got a fundamentally good grip as I've talked about in multiple channel episodes including this recent installment: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y2iYhIt8atmfY5o. Went out yesterday, same course shot 47/47 pretty typical for my game. But it’s my ugly short game that gets me every time. This year I vow to be more consistent. Your tips will get me there. Because it’s really all about simplifying the game which you do very well

Hi Tom, so two quick questions; does this work for driver as well as iron? does it matter that you might be 61 and movement & flexibility is a bit less than your age?
@SagutoGolf3 жыл бұрын
@C&N, 1) Yes - it’s the same swing with every club in your bag.... (except the putter, perhaps 😆) Just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. Also, the progressively widening stance as we move through the longer clubs necessitates that the hips travel a greater distance laterally in the downswing, because if the hips stop their lateral slide towards the target prior to impact their rotation takes over, changing the low point and rerouting the club step-by-step, thereby producing a variety of undesirable results including fat and thin contact, topped shots and popups, straight pulls, and “banana” slices. It is oftentimes the reason some golfers will experience early success with the short irons but struggle a bit with the longer clubs. In this regard there are troubleshooting lessons and drills in my online school that are designed to specifically address and resolve these issues (in addition to the structured learning platform for the entire swing and much, much more). 2) The Stack & Tilt swing is a very body-friendly method. For me this is supported by my personal experience as a player and furthered by the fact that the majority of my students are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, and joint replacements - who are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. Should you wish to give this swing a fair shot by learning it properly, please consider enrolling in the aforementioned online school. For just $10 US/month or $99 US/year you'll have unlimited access to a comprehensive members-only platform that really simplifies the process through succinct, step-by-step videos, and I'm regularly adding new content. There's even a members' forum where you can ask me specific swing-related questions, interact with others in the SagutoGolf community, and suggest new content ideas, plus you'll also have access to all exclusive "Crispier Than KFC Club" KZbin channel members' content at no additional charge. Do you have any video on the hinge? When using the grid like you have, I get sorta confused on taking the club back along the grid line to the top. Where I am confused at is when the club head crosses over the hands. Like at the 3:07 to 3:12 of the video. that part of tracing the grid makes total sense, its the hinge move to the top after the tracing you show I cant seem to grasp. Help!

Ahhh...the age-old question in search of some form of sage advice.............. I'm sorry to have to disappoint you, Steve. First of all, ask ten different golfers and they may give you ten different answers. Secondly, the same golfer may give you a different answer this week than he gave last week depending on what he is feeling on a particular day! I'll quote the Stack and Tilt book's answer to this question: _"You need a comprehensive overview of the motion to understand how to direct the various parts of the body to create the correct sequence of the swing. So consider it the brain that starts the swing. Clear intentions simplify execution."_ That probably doesn't help you very much, but for just $10 US/month of $99 US/year my online school will get you on the fast track to owning this swing through short, simple, step-by-step videos. This will give you that _"comprehensive overview of the motion"_ the S&T guys are referring to. Here's a link if you'd like more info: saguto.golf/p/golf-swing-simplified-tom-saguto-pga Cheers! Tom

Steve, The key components of the Stack and Tilt swing are weight forward, hands in, tilt/turn/extend. This is what should "keep going" to the body's natural stopping point in the backswing. This most recent video addresses the hands-in motion, and you may find further clarification in this video from last year with a unique perspective: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jamndWlpptqsoZo As for weight-forward, you start with your weight favoring your lead leg at address (55/45 for short and mid irons; 60/40 for the longer clubs), increase that same weight forward to the top of the backswing (70/30), and further increase the forward weight during the downswing from halfway down (80/20) through impact (90/10) and to the finish at 95/5 forward. Finally, here's a channel lesson episode on tilting, turning, and extending: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5K6haxpps91las Again, as per the other reply my best recommendation is the online school. It's a tremendous value for detailed PGA instruction, and the results speak for themselves. (A recent survey of SagutoGolf online school members garnered a statistically significant return of 182 responses with the following outcome: Upon enrolling in the online school, the average 18-hole score among all respondents was 92. Since being in the school these same students now report an average 18-hole score of 82 - a full 10-stroke improvement!) Tom

@SagutoGolf Жыл бұрын
There is no magic elixir here, Larry - no shortcuts, no way for me to climb into someone’s physiological and psychological uniqueness and translate my personal swing feels, thoughts, or triggers into theirs. It takes time dedicated to proper practice and drilling on the front end. We need to conquer the "ghosts of swings past" and ingrain our own "feels" for the correct elements. Once you develop sufficient confidence in the motion that you are comfortable "giving up control", you'll be able to just trust it and let it fly. At that point you'll have made that giant leap from playing "golf swing" to truly enjoying the game of golf. I hope to see you soon in the school! Tom

Great lesson thank you! I am looking for a golf net - Where did you get yours or where do you recommend getting one?
@SagutoGolf3 жыл бұрын
Hi Helena, I'm glad you enjoyed this episode!! The net is a DIY job. It is approximately 7’ tall and 8’ wide. We used this video as a starting point - kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6GUYqSpaaplipI - and then made some other minor PVC support structure modifications to suit our needs. We did not use PVC cement as this allows us to easily disassemble it if necessary. The netting we used differs from the screening material in the video. Ours was purchased through Amazon - “NETTEXX Golf Cage Impact Net 10ft X 10ft” - as were these bungees for attaching the net to the frame - “Kotap BB-6B Ball Bungee Cords with Elastic String for Canopy, Tarp, Straps, Tent, Poles and Wires, 6-Inch (25-Count), Black”. (If using a net like we did you probably won’t need the screw hooks that are mentioned in the video - the bungees should suffice.) Also, I have a Real Feel 3x5 Country Club Elite® Golf Mat. You can visit them here - www.RealFeelGolfMats.com. If purchasing be sure to use coupon code "SAGUTOGOLF" (without the quotes and no spaces) at check out to claim your special SagutoGolf discount on the Country Club Elite® series of mats! @SagutoGolf2 жыл бұрын
That's awesome, Jane - I'm very glad to have you onboard!! Here's some preliminary advice to help you get off to a good start on your journey to the Land of Ball Striking Bliss: 1) Regardless of a member's skill level, this swing necessitates a complete reboot for someone transitioning from a shift & lift swing (which is typically the case), and therefore it is imperative that one take sufficient time to ensure that the fundamental components are mastered. From the ground up there is nothing superfluous in the Stack & Tilt swing - in other words, everything with a purpose, and a purpose for everything. (For example, contrary to shift & lift where you may be taught to keep your trail foot perpendicular to the target line as a means of "creating resistance" in your trail side, in S&T we flare both feet out 10-20 degrees in order to facilitate a free flowing, inclined hip and shoulder turn.) I cannot emphasize this enough, as frustrations predominantly occur when students jump ahead in the curriculum without properly dedicating themselves to the foundational base upon which our consistently repeatable, powerful, low maintenance swing must be built. Chapter 1 of the Golf Swing Simplified program (GSS) and Part I of Get Out & Go Play (GOGP) both address this. 2a) GSS: One of the many great things about this swing is that you can achieve solid ball striking even at the most basic levels. This is why I oftentimes will suggest that students park themselves on Chapter 2 of the GSS course for an extended period of time after locking down Chapter 1's foundational elements. Chapter 2 reinforces the body motions and the weight-forward component, and it culminates with what I call "The Best Golf Swing Practice Drill of All Time". Work yourself sequentially and gradually through the chapter, and then commit yourself to that drill in Lesson 2.8. Learn it. Practice it. Master it. You can even use this partially abbreviated swing on the course and play quite well with it as it will provide plenty of distance. (It actually is the full swing minus just a couple of power accumulators.) Once you've got that down, you will be well prepared to move forward in the curriculum and well on your way towards taking ownership of YOUR swing! 2b) GOGP: This quick-start program is exactly as it sounds - it is designed to fast-track you out onto the course so you can have fun - and success - playing as you learn! Should you choose this path, everything in #1 above still applies, and as implied above in 2a you will still want to work through it sequentially and gradually, mastering each lesson before moving ahead to the next one. In this program, Drill #5 - The Flying Wedge is the one you'll want to park yourself on and nail down. 3) Also, as you progress always keep in mind the V1 Swing Video Analysis service, an effective and inexpensive service that I highly recommend to everyone in the school. I liken it to bringing your swing into the shop for a tune-up or minor repair. Scheduling one on a quarterly basis for preventive maintenance will do wonders for keeping things humming along nicely, and it's also a great tool for pinpointing and resolving any issues that arise. The process involves downloading the free V1 app and then submitting two videos to me through the app - one down-the-line (captured from your stance line, not the target line) and the other face-on. You'll find more information about the V1 Analysis halfway down this page on the Saguto.Golf site: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolf 4) Finally, please migrate over to the SagutoGolf Community Forum - which is included in your online school enrollment - and begin engaging with your fellow members. It only takes a minute or two to enroll - just go to your “My Courses” screen and you’ll see a link to get started. Once signed in you’ll be able to access and participate in the great dialogue that we are having on a variety of topics. You can start discussions, contribute to existing threads, post specific swing questions, make some new friends, and just share in the common bond of golfers from around the world seeking to improve their games and help others to do the same. I really think you’ll enjoy it! I look forward to assisting you through the school’s structured lessons and drills towards building a consistent, low maintenance, powerful, body-friendly swing that will bring your enjoyment of this great game to a new level! Tom

Question: why isnt the target line parallel to the hand/clubhead line? Why is it on angle pointing left?
@SagutoGolf3 жыл бұрын
The hand path and the club path are parallel, but since they work to the inside and not straight back they cannot be parallel to the target line. This is a key component to the swing method I teach, as it facilitates swinging in a centered circle and enables you to harness the tremendous power source known as angular momentum. Have a look at this pervious channel video and I think you'll get a clear (and different) perspective of this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jamndWlpptqsoZo Cheers, Tom

I can't tell you how many years I've swing along the Target line and how many golf balls I've spent trying to cure the rolling open clubface and steep downswing WHILE swinging on the Target line. I've seen thousands of instructional videos, but you are the first to actually show the root of the problem instead of putting band aids on the problem, then duct tape over those band aids when those failed. Didn't take me more than 2 swings with this to get the look I've been going for for 10+ years. I'm a little pissed it's just been this simple.

After hitting 210-220 on average...with way too much effort, hitting 240 was like 300. Now on my second full year.. I hit on average 290-300 controlled and my 100 and in game is incredible. Listen to Tom people. Come over to the land of milk and honey!

You da Man, Johnny!! Great to hear from you, and thanks for your support and for sharing your experience! You patiently worked the process, took ownership of your new swing, and BOOM - look at you today!! I bet you can't wait for it to thaw out up there! Thanks for your post, my friend - looking forward to year #2 of extra crispy KFC (perhaps with a side of milk & honey...) 😂 Tom

Hi Ben, I'm in the Grand Strand area, but I have phased out in-person instruction so I can further dedicate my efforts in support of the online school. I will, however, continue the V1 Swing Video Analysis lessons as they are instrumental to the progress of my school's members, and these can be done for anyone from anywhere across the globe, school member or not. This enables me to put my eyes on your swing and offer some very specific observations and corrective action plans if applicable. The process involves downloading the free V1 app and then submitting two videos to me through the app - one down-the-line (captured from your stance line, not the target line) and the other face-on. You'll find more information about the V1 Analysis halfway down this page on the Saguto.Golf site: saguto.golf/p/lessons And here's a link if you are not already enrolled in the school and would like to know more about it: saguto.golf Thanks! Tom

Tom, another great tip, thanks. Can you do me a favour? One of the first videos I watched of yours was when you were driving so well you were hitting the roof of that tin building in the background. It was so loud it was like a gunshot! I laughed so much I had tears in my eyes watching that one. How about a challenge. See if you can land 4 consecutive shots on that roof?.

Nice lesson, can you do video showing how to set up work station properly. Thanks in advance.

I'm glad you enjoyed it, Charlie! It's really not that difficult a setup. One stick represents the target line, and your foot line should be parallel to it. The angled sticks represent the concentric paths traveled by the hands and clubface as the hands are brought inward without any twisting, rotating, or other contrived manipulation. This channel video from last year offers a unique bird's eye perspective which perhaps might provide some clarity with regard to the setup and what we are seeking to accomplish by not "crossing streams": kzbin.info/www/bejne/jamndWlpptqsoZo Cheers, Tom

@@SagutoGolf Thank you for replying. A bit of an eye opener, and a great feel for the correct path. I used to have an inside takeaway, in trying to fix this I think I have been taking the club head to much along the target line. This causing disconnected outside takeaway. Chasing my tail around a bit trying to get it right. From what I am taking from this is club head stays outside the hands, but club head still comes in on an arc. Hope that’s correct, and once again thank you for taking the time to reply. Take care.

Arnold Palmer was mainly focused on the takeaway. it's been a while but my recollection is that he believed the first three feet were the key to the swing in his classic, "My Game and Yours." of course my implementation of this advice resulted in about eight extra parts lol

@SagutoGolf3 жыл бұрын
Yes - it’s the same swing with every club in your bag, Shaun. Just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. Also, the progressively widening stance as we move through the longer clubs necessitates that the hips travel a greater distance laterally in the downswing, because if the hips stop their lateral slide towards the target prior to impact their rotation takes over, changing the low point and rerouting the club across the ball, thereby causing an out-to-in glancing blow and producing a variety of undesirable results including fat and thin contact, topped shots and popups, straight pulls, and “banana” slices. At just $10 US/month or $99 US/year it is perhaps the best PGA golf instruction deal out there. Here's a link if you'd like more info: saguto.golf/p/golf-swing-simplified-tom-saguto-pga I hope the lesson in this video worked well for you! Tom
