EVERYTHING You Need to Know About Wrist Hinge in the Golf Swing. The wrist hinge is an important piece of the golf swing ONLY IF you know how to use it correctly. Most amateurs hinge their wrists improperly in the golf swing leading to an issue which I call "Club-Hugging Syndrome". This wrist hinge problem causes golfers to lose power and consistency in their golf swing. Not only that, if you're a "club-hugger", chances are that you have difficulty creating a full shoulder turn in your golf swing. In this episode you will learn how to eliminate "club-hugging" syndrome from your golf swing and begin using the wrist hinge as a source of power and consistency in your game.
By Getting the Wrist Hinge in the Golf Swing correct, you will experience:
1. An increase in DISTANCE because you're allowing the club to travel on a direct, powerful path to the golf ball.
2. IMPROVED CONSISTENCY because you won't be weakly lifting up and chopping with the golf club in your swing - and having active hand problems.
3. MORE FUN because you'll be striping the ball frequently!
4. LESS HEADACHES because you won't have nearly as many swing thoughts!

I am Tom Saguto, PGA Member and founder of SagutoGolf. Thank you for visiting my instructional page where you can find how to get on the fast track to improving your golfing abilities. Whether you are a seasoned golfing veteran looking for a quick swing tune-up after an on-course emergency, or a beginner just looking to get the most out of your golfing experience, I am here to help you achieve your golfing goals.
My mission as your swing doctor is simple, to help you maximize your enjoyment in game of golf. Because, let’s face it, golf is a hard game.
My philosophy is wholly based on the student having a fun, meaningful experience in a frustrating and complicated game where potential lifelong golfers either quit because it is too difficult or that they experience some form of swing-related pain or discomfort. I mitigate these problems by focusing entirely on the student’s needs and goals while teaching a golf swing method that ultimately takes stress off of the common pain areas of the swing.

@@yooper9062 That's a preference of his and he ends up compensating for that move by rotating hard with his hips in the downswing. Not my cup of tee but if it works well for him, I wouldn't change it - but I wouldn't teach the average golfer to do that. DJ is a "freak of nature" athlete.

I'm very glad to know that this lesson resonated with you, and I hope it performs well when you put it into practice! If we pre-establish the connections properly in the setup and have a foundational base that facilitates a full centered turn without restriction, then once we've ingrained the correct actions through sequential drilling and repetition we can entrust the motion to the big muscles and allow the arms, wrists, hands, and club to simply go along for the ride and respond accordingly as if on autopilot. The power accumulators - including the proper wrist action - will then naturally load and fire with no contrived manipulations or precise timing necessary, thereby returning the face to the position pre-established at address. It's called "giving up control to gain control", and it's the formula for consistently blissful ball striking and seemingly effortless power. Here are some of my other lessons videos on this topic: - kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3evnmlte9NrZ68 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJerammqitNpotU - kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZ7Cg6eJfcd7bsU And here's a link to my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” where you can learn some key aspects of the swing system I teach in a more structured manner: go.saguto.golf/ Thanks for your kind words regarding my teaching style. With me it was the exact opposite. Always had great extension and hit it pretty far. I was so focused on keeping my hands as far from my head as possible to create a greater arc I was impeding my wrist flexibility. Recently I've been initiating my wrist hinge first. Then I complete my normal swing. It increased my carry distance by 20 yards to 275 with the driver.
@fontking1a
@fontking1a 3 жыл бұрын
Not too sure about club hugging but the wrists are the key to power for many of the pros. The wrists MUST HINGE ON THE BACKSWING and WHEN they do is a personal preference. If there was only one way to swing a golf club properly, we'd all know about it. I will agree that "thinking" about your hands or wrists is a swing killer. Golf is simply and matter of hand-eye coordination and it's a fine motor skill. It's a stick and a ball and hand-eye coordination. I like your videos and your style, bro'. Keep 'em coming.
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 3 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you're enjoying the content! If we 1) have a proper grip and setup, 2)maintain our upper arm connections, and 3) execute the motions properly, it very much puts the hinging of the wrists on autopilot. IF.......🤓 Thanks for your comment! Tom

Love these videos... One thing I struggle with is "flipping the wrists" on the downswing. Backswing looks good, but I guess my baseball swing keeps coming back and I just cannot stop flipping them. I guess I don't trust that I will hit the ball without controlling that portion of the swing?
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 2 ай бұрын
As a former baseball player and ex-flipper myself, I certainly understand, Mike. It's so hard to suppress and overcome that "hit" instinct, but to put it plainly and simply - we need to eliminate it in order to play consistently good golf. So, if we pre-establish the connections properly in the setup and have a foundational base that facilitates a full centered turn without restriction, then once we've ingrained the correct actions through sequential drilling and repetition we can entrust the motion to the big muscles and allow the arms, wrists, hands, and club to simply go along for the ride and respond accordingly as if on autopilot. The power accumulators - including the proper arm, wrist, and hand action - will then naturally load and fire with no contrived manipulations or precise timing necessary, thereby returning the face to the position pre-established at address. It's called "giving up control to gain control", and it's the formula for consistently blissful ball striking and seemingly effortless power. Don't release hard with the hands - hold off the release. When you turn over your hands the clubface rolls aggressively causing a closed clubface at impact leading to pull shots.

But Tom, if I don’t consciously release in follow through, I would sometimes over fade even if my takeaways have a slightly closed face.

You might be interested in reading a couple of golf books written by Dr. H.A.Murray - `The Golf Secret` and `More Golf Secrets` They were both written by an English doctor in the early 1950`s and are years ahead of their time. Dr Murray is extremely knowledgeable and logical in his analysis of the golf swing and he has the same philosophy about the golf swing as yourself Tom. All body turn, left shoulder down, no forced wrist hinge etc. You can still get these two books second hand on Amazon. I am sure you would find them both very interesting to read.

Tom, I had the 2nd thru 7th vertebra in my neck reinforced with 2 7 inch strips of titanium 2 years ago. This has limited my ability to play golf with any consistency, I have limited grip strength and upper body strength. I have looked for some way to try to play golf close to the way I used to a 12 handicap , with the swing I practiced for 40 years. I saw your youtube video and decided to try stack and tilt , surprising to me but probably not to you I was able to get 90% of my old distance back and my direction is better. However I am still inconsistent especially with my driver. Re-watching your videos I think I have fihured out my problem, I have been trying to make the lateral move you talk about for power. Today I realized if I kept my chin fixed over my impact point I was able to get power an accuracy. Played my normal inconsistent round until the last 5 holes when I had this personal revelation Pared 4 and birded the Par 5 I usually cannot reach in regulation. Really looking forward to playing on Friday, I will be signing up for your lesson plan. Thanks Steve

That is fantastic, Steve!! I truly appreciate you sharing your story, and I'm very glad to know that you are enrolling in the online school as that will really put you on the fast track towards owning this swing through your entire bag! The Stack & Tilt swing is a proven body-friendly method. For me personally this has been further supported by the fact that the majority of my students are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's with a variety of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back surgeries, and joint replacements, and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. So although your neck vertebrae fusion is a bit more extreme, you are correct - I really am not surprised by your success. Instead I'm just thrilled that you searched around KZbin and found my channel!! Welcome back to playing the game at a level you can enjoy!! Thanks again! Tom

YES! Amazing to finally focus on your target and just giving it your all. The biggest help is in a slow controlled takeaway. You can really feel the weight on the front leg, and when you swing through, it feels like you're slingshotting it towards your direction/target.

I’ve shot all kinds of good scores, have had a hole in one, and I thought I knew how to strike a golf ball. I had no clue. The best tip is when he used the driving range furniture behind him so that in the down swing you have to drop the hands so that you have no choice but to come down on or underneath that plain and never over the top. After that, it’s just been pure euphoric effortless ball striking. I also suffer from really bad ADD, he has a way of exposing things that keep me engaged and for me, easy to understand. I wish I lived near him.

Ok, so I put a comment just below about how great these tips are to improve your game. I have watched about 20 of Toms videos now and just went out for the second time to try them out, again no practice at all. Needless to say, I just shot the best game of my life, I am a 115 golfer at best, and I shot a 95 today. Have never hit my irons so well. Thank you so much for breaking down these swing tips and making it easy to understand

Hey Tom. Great stuff. You have helped me our before. My junior golfer daughter has beautiful swing but she sets club super late. Waits till position 3. Gets it good at top. But since they are set so late she overswings a bit. How do I teach her to set wrists a little more at beginning without messing up golf swing.
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf Жыл бұрын
If we pre-establish the connections properly in the setup and have a foundational base that facilitates a full centered turn without restriction, then we can - and should - entrust the motion to the big muscles and allow the arms, wrists, hands, and club to simply go along for the ride and respond accordingly as if on autopilot. The power accumulators will naturally load and fire with no contrived manipulations or precise timing necessary, thereby returning the face to its pre-set position established at address. It's called "giving up control to gain control", and it's the formula for consistently blissful ball striking and seemingly effortless power. Here are a couple of recent lessons on the body-driven swing that may help: - kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3evnmlte9NrZ68 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJerammqitNpotU And here's one specific to quiet hands: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3i2hISkqM6BbZY (As your daughter will see towards the middle part of this video, the wrists will properly set without any active manipulations, placing her in an ideal position at the top. Beyond that, have you considered enrolling your daughter in the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of my online school? That's where - among many other courses and lessons covering various aspects of the game - you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step from setup to finish. Additionally, you'll find all my short game content (putting, chipping, pitching, bunker play), advanced level courses on shot shaping and power/distance, diagnostic and corrective tools for resolving common swing, contact, and ball flight issues, and much more there. The best golf instructor I ever had put a brace on top of my right wrist that kept it from hinging. I could not believe how straight the ball went and my 7 iron went 160 vs 130. Wrist hinge probably brings more power but for the average golfer it is a killer.. Keep the wrists locked and see straight shots. It creates inconsistent shots and is overrated.

Thanks Tom. How stiff should my wrist be and how do you release the club?
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ross - I don't like to feel stiffness in my wrists, because that means tension to me, and tension bad.... As for the second part of your question, I don't teach the flipping or rolling of the hands that some in the "traditional" instruction world might call a "release". To paraphrase the Stack and Tilt book: "The angle between the trail arm and the shaft and the flat (or almost flat) position of the lead wrist remain intact through impact; no rolling or flipping of the club occurs." In Stack & Tilt and Golfing Machine circles, the retention of that trail arm angle is referred to as the "flying wedge". I will be "releasing" a video touching on this soon. Very very soon. As in this Saturday's (7/18) episode!!! If you are interested in getting on the fast track towards truly owning this swing, I'd like to suggest that you consider enrolling in the SagutoGolf online school. For just $10 US/month or $99 US/year you'll have unlimited access to a comprehensive members-only learning system for the entire swing and much more. This really simplifies the process through succinct, step-by-step videos, and I'm constantly adding new content. Here's a link if you'd like additional info: saguto.golf/p/golf-swing-simplified-tom-saguto-pga. Supplementally, you will also benefit from purchasing a copy of the Stack & Tilt book by Mike Bennett and Andy Plummer as it will serve as a great reference source for the swing method I teach, and it also includes many of the finer and more technical aspects of it. Thanks! Tom

The key here is not to FORCE the hinge, it is a NATURAL wrist hinge powered by the weight of the club (gravity does the work). Also, my hands forward position at address naturally causes a slightly early hinge but it is not forced at all.

However....Tom, do you remember your 2017 video on wrists kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHSYoaKKhdqSa5I ? Improve consistency even more by lifting the hands at address so the wrists are uncocked and the right arm and club form a straight line. We can't strike the ball with cocked wrists so might as well uncock them at address. Then use your advice and this will produce a good single plane swing.

@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 2 жыл бұрын
HI Justin, If you have a good grip and maintain the connections between your upper arms and chest, then gravity combined with the proper swing motions should cause the wrists to hinge correctly on autopilot. The upcoming episode being released this weekend speaks to the importance of the wrist hinge as a power source and how the wrists should work through impact for consistently crispy shots. Beyond that, it is important to understand that the videos, lessons, and drills on this free channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, feels, and/or common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next.
