We don't know if there has been demand or not. And like you said, it's been only five days. It often takes MUCH longer than 5 days for the truth to come out, if ever. And ransoms are not usually publicly announced or covered when they are in progress, and when they are, it sometimes causes it to result in a disaster. And the last thing in the world a kidnapper wants (usually) is the person they demand ransom from to leak it to media and have it out all over the place. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't, and we may never know. It may be demanding ransom from someone who does not want to be identified either, or is a criminal or part of an organization themself, too. Back in the early to mid 80's I was stationed in the Philippines. One of the strictest and most pronounced warnings that we were given was about "no go zones" around the PI, markedly THE ISLAND OF MINDANAO and hiking in the jungles/rain forests especially around Mount Pinatubo. The former because these were all communists that hated Americans and the latter because some areas were still inhabited by tribes known to be head-hunters and cannibals. I think the latter was more to scare us so they didn't have to send out search parties, however the warnings about Mindanao were serious. Once in a while a drunk sailor or Airman not sticking to the bars on the main drags would be kidnapped and held for a quick ransom. Sometimes it was a bit more serious where servicemen would travel to other southern islands thinking it was safe to meet some girl's family and end up kidnapped but by the time the authorities found out because he didn't show up for duty after a weekend it was too late. If the MPs could not get to you without going to Mindanao, then you were as good as dead. These communist operatives were good at stealing Philippine Police and military uniforms all the time too, so you never knew.

Filipino from the neighboring region in Minadano here. Zambuanga is a great place to visit but not stay for long, and that's even for locals. The problem isn't the locals of the region but radicals that live in and near the area. These extremists want to build up money for a greater foothold in the Philippines and their common tactic is to extort money from local businesses and kidnapping high value targets and foreign nationals. Foreigners that try to live in those unsafe areas are an additional burden to the Philippines by straining diplomatic relations at the very least and funding extremists by paying ransoms or dying and giving his loved ones grief at the very worst.

My wife is from Mindanao from the town of bansalan. I've gone there a few times and been around the area. The philippines is a gorgeous place with some of the nicest/ hardest working people you will ever meet. The current government tries their best but like in the US where you have democrats and Republicans, in the philippines you have US supporters and Chinese supporters. Depending on those who are in charge will shape the government. You also have other nations wanting to buy up the country and push the philippines people out like they did in hawaii. Yes there is curruption, but the US is no different. Yes there are dangerous areas, but Chicago and new york aren't exactly the safest place in the world either. The issue is when you are in any country, you act wisely. I have never felt my life was in danger in Mindanao. I have blonde hair and stand out like a sore thumb there too. The people were kind enough to tell the man to leave and he chose to make bad choices. Honestly, the country is growing every year and getting safer. Don't let something like this scare tou away from the country, but use common sense when you go to ANY country.

This is indeed baffling, why was he insisting on living in this town when the locals were so worried for him? Not to mention, the threat to his safety and even his life means that when he was finally taken, now there's police, special agents from the Philippines, and now FBI agents are out seeking to rescue or recover him/his body, and every one of these people are in danger too. These people are risking their own safety to find him, which is truly the worst part here. He obviously did not even think about the danger to others if he was harmed, killed, kidnapped... And watching him talk, I really think if he did ponder this danger to others he was creating with his stay there, he did not really care. Simply disgusting. The FBI is searching, but the Local Police are now saying that there's no sign of Life, and they are certain he's no longer with us. They also state they doubt they will find him, dead or alive at this point. He's gone. Such a needless tragedy. Now, someone needs to suggest to Johnny Somali to go there! Having foreign police involved is not the way you want a prank to go.I highly doubt it is a prank of any form, seriously, no doubt the Phillipine military is involved now, as they are the ones that do hostage rescue, plus this has made a lot of news stations over the last week. Nobody wants a US national kidnapped and held in their country, the hassle it causes, the revenue loss alone from tourists that think the whole country is a major risk is bad enough.

Most people don’t properly take the time to fully understand the consequences of dangerous situations. He fully understood. He knew they wanted him specifically. He continued live-streaming and talking about lending money. That’s so weird. Is he 25 yet? 🙈 this is horrible man.

there is no shot this guy is alive. money he has is whatever, but the fact that he is bringing attention, and showing the faces of the thugs and kidnappers broadcasted is sure to rattle their cage.
