Al looks like your roosting bars aren't high enough that's why they are sleeping in your nesting boxes. They like to roost as high as possible and you have one bar that is higher then the nesting boxes which I would assume will get filed up and the rest then choose between the lower bar and the nesting boxes that are on the same level. If you had another bar that was as high as your highest roost they would probably use them instead of the nesting boxes.

If indeed you have a predator, and you want to catch it on camera, start limiting your trips to check the cameras to once every week or better yet, 2 weeks. You are leaving human scent, and that will deter their presence. If you are not that concerned about filming one, then by all means check your cameras, walk the area, bring the dogs. The more the predators are disturbed, the less they will frequent the area. Also-- set your cameras to take pictures along the trail so the animals are either walking into the camera or away. If you set them perpendicular to the trail, many times the animals move quickly and the camera either doesn't trigger, or triggers too late. Finally- try to point your cameras to the north. You will get less photos that are triggered by the daily sun travel across the sky and the resultant shadows on the sensors.

Throwing out ashes from your wood stove will help with the ice as well. Also some cold ash and dry sand in a box will be appreciated by the chickens in winter for dusting. Blocking off all but a couple of the nest boxes in winter is also a good idea. It works two fold. Less place for the cold hens to sleep in the winter and less boxes means that hens share more when they are laying. That keeps a hen on the nest more often and keeps your eggs from freezing.

Gooooooood Afternoon , Tracker Al , Gina & Olivia , I can see right away why you have chickens roosting in the nesting boxes . Al , you have one of the roosting bars much lower than the nesting boxes in NYC ! Since the chickens prefer to roost higher rather than lower , they will roost in the nesting boxes. It is instinct for them. They try to roost higher than the ground level predators. Place one of your game cameras inside of New Yolk City and you'll see how the chickens are roosting at night. I suggest moving the lowest roosting bar to a level that is higher than the nesting boxes. I believe that you will see a major difference. Isn't it amazing how quickly we can fall ? I did it myself a couple of months ago. I entered my dark house , turned to find the light switch , lost my balance and found myself on the floor before I even knew that I was falling down. Nothing broken. Just a bump on my head where my head had hit the leg of the heavy wooden rocking chair. Now I am more careful if I am in the dark. I hold on to something sturdy before I move. At least until there is some light to see by. Lol , I am going to fail a sobriety test if I have to close my eyes, stretch my arms out and stand on one foot. I will be on the ground before I know it .

As far as keeping bucks I always have, I keep Oberhasli goats. My current fella is horned, almost all have been. They help my LGD protect against coyotes. We have only had 1 mean one, the rest have been great. They do stink during rut season! They live with our bull and steers in the summer. They eat what bulls won't including poison ivy and brambles. Best thing they kill the locust trees with the long thorns, eat the bark and thorns right off them! Most bucks aren't bad fellas I'm glad you chose to keep a couple. AI is a big gamble, and taking does to another farm is a huge risk of disease. WTG hope the Netflix nights prove successful your buck was sure doing his job.

Fun family outing today, thanks for taking us along :) Quick story, one year I bought hay from a Christmas Tree farm, made from where they mowed between the isles of growing trees. Sadly, when it came to the birthing of our babies that year, I lost 2 of my best does due to complications. Yes, vet called out, turns out the babies in vitro were all dead, twisted, and mangled inside because they never developed any cartilage in their bodies. Turns out some Christmas trees are sprayed, while growing, with heavy pesticides and subsequently, so had the surrounding, growing hay. Feeding goats natural, organic trees is just fine...but commercially grown trees might REALLY have disastrous effects on their unborn kids. On a happier note, we wish you a very Merry Christmas!

I used to work for a Christmas tree grower. He'd forage forests for a thick patch of fir seedlings, pull them up by the handfuls and plant them in his fields. He said the key to a good tree was in the pruning and shaping. Olivia might find it a fun project. Fun fact: When holiday buyers left stumps with branches, those branches become trees. My grower called them "turn-ups". He'd cut off all but the strongest upturned branch and in a couple years there's be a lovely table-top tree.
