BossMan! I worked in factories and around equipment for 44 years. Saw a lot of freak accidents. The video demonstrates your dedication to safety, but I would feel better if the girls hair was safely contained. Rings, watchbands and jewelry should be breakaway or not worn in the the work environment. Love the channel. Thanks for your devotion to efficiency.

All the machine guarding in the world won’t stop hair from getting caught. I had a young lady working for me at my last job that didn’t have her hair tied back and it got caught in a dial moving at 350rpm. Ripped a 2” section of her scalp off and we considered that lucky. It only takes a second for your life to change when working around machinery.

As long as they brought up safety first, I have made the same observation watching these videos, and grimace at times when I see all the hair flying around. Friend of mine had most of her scalp torn out by a drill press accident about 45 years ago. When I had hair almost as long back in the early 70s, I always tied it back but eventually just made the move to short hair by 1975. I don't ever see much in the way of eye protection here either. Things happen so fast, you will never even know what hit you!

Young lady, you may not be “made of sugar”, but you really are made of something special. Both you and Jade are excellent role models for any young women who choose to work in what was, in the past, very much a male-dominated area of work. Your advice regarding First-Aid is really good. I worked in a couple of roles during my working life in which life-changing or life-threatening injuries were more common than I care to recall. Get all the medical training you can. It’s never a waste of time nor money.

Thanks Emerald! They call them safety guards for a reason! I have seen people get hurt and lose fingers by not paying attention to the safety rules! Me included I almost lost a finger by wearing my high school ring while working on a forklift, I never wore a ring again at work again after that, and I still have the ring just as it was cut off my finger as a reminder. Sometimes those lessons make indelible impressions more than someone just telling you to follow the rules. Thanks for the video, and thanks to Jade for filming it! When I saw the title for this, I was going to jump on and write exactly the same comment. Notwithstanding being “careful” hair, loose clothing, hoodie neck or waist cords - ANYTHING “dangly” - should be tied back or removed. I know of too many accidents that have happened in industry and farming that have hurt, maimed, or killed people. It’s just not worth the risk to not tie hair etc back.

I spent over 28 years with OSHA. One of my job duties was to investigate accidents both nonfatal and fatal. I've seen a lot of tragedy that no one should have to see. I've also had to speak with people who have lost loved ones in senseless accidents that could have been prevented with just a little caution and basically common sense preventative mearsures. I respect what you all do and pray that you will continue to think about safety as an assset and not a hinderance.

The best safety representatives I've ever worked with, were former artisans. They know what is required to get the job done and assist with safety aspects without hindering the job. Unfortunately most safety representatives have probably not even picked up a spanner in their lives and are total idiots as far as the job is concerned. Jobs that should take say 30 minutes could take hours because of all the safety protocols. I get that common sense is rare nowadays so the idiots are necessary but they should make it mandatory that a safety representative has artisan training and hands on experience. A perfect example is on the last mine I worked on, a safety rep instructed a turner to wear gloves. The turner almost lost his finger because the rep was unaware of safe protocols when working on a lathe and that gloves are a no no. He just assumed because the mines standard was hand protection when doing manual labour that that covered everywhere. Besides nearly losing a finger, the turner also nearly lost his job. The turner should have known better but he was a junior and was doing what he was told. Obviously nothing happened to the safety rep. They are given to much power imo.

Hard to practice safety. Being safe does not always work. For example, years ago I worked in a factory, and here was lasers of both sides of the door on this machine, and if anything was between those lasers the door would stop. We one day it didn't, and the door slammed on my hand. It was a safety feature that failed.

You guys rock. I watch every video I can find from LCLY. Every member of your team is very intelligent and hard working. Very knowledgeable and articulate. I will be 62 this year and have worked in manufacturing and industrial jobs as a supervisor my entire adult life. Safety is number one. I have seen and responded to some awful accidents on the job, some fatal. Sadly I have seen 2 very smart workers have their scalps removed after getting caught in a machine. Long hair is something I have always loved. But not having it out at work. Along with loose clothing and jewelry. Sometimes I am told to mind my own business when calling these things out. I have seen the results of these accidents and they come with great misery for everyone. Search on KZbin and you might change your work habits. Peace and Love to you all.

Great topic.. I've been in mechanical maintenance for over 20 years and seen a lot of injuries and a little prevention can go a long way in not having a painful lifelong reminder. Something you should add to your first aid kit is the blood stop packets that you pour on a bad cut/laceration and it causes it to clot/seal up fast till you can get to a medical facility. I have to agree with the safety glasses recommendation they have saved my eyes many times from flying objects mostly from other people. Just try this experiment cover one eye for an hour or two and try to do your normal routine and imagine that's permanent and thinking it could have been prevented with a cheap pair of safety glasses and you will see what we are saying. 2 thumbs up for your channel and keep the videos coming : )

A worthwhile topic Emerald, thanks for mentioning some of the aspects of your work environment. The lay-out of your workspace is important and often develops organically, doesn't it - sometimes without the thought that you folks have put in. May I make some observations though? I am often more concerned about any loose hair any of you may have, and sometimes eye protection would be advisable too. Hearing loss is one of those things that happens subtly, over time, but loss of vision may happen faster than one can blink! Thankfully my workplace test these issues (plus lung function!) regularly. Keep up the good work everyone - and thanks for your energies! Happy (and safe) 2023.

While I’m repeating what has already been said by others, I think it’s worth saying again since the topic of the video is safety. If you really want to follow safe practice around a sawmill, you should have eye protection in the vicinity of the mill at all times. We see that you wear ear protection, but your eyes need it too. Also, when working around any kind of rotating or moving equipment, your hair and any other “dangly” things like clothing ties (eg hoodie neck or waist laces) should ALWAYS be tied back. That is standard procedure in industry, and it only takes a split second for a lock of hair or a piece of loose clothing to get caught in machinery. The results can be devastating. While you, your sisters, and even your mom clearly love to wear your hair down, please, for the sake of safety, tie it back around your equipment.

On a side note on safety, I’m working through your old videos and saw the one where you hit a nail in a log and damaged / destroyed the blade, I don’t know if it is still common practice here or not in the mills but they used to run a cheap metal detector over the logs prior to sawing. Whether it’s worth it for you or not I don’t know. Down here in the South West or Western Australia it was done because certain groups of people a few decades ago thought it was a good idea to spike trees with metal rods, they were caught by both the police a some of the gentlemen working in the timber industry and the error of their ways was explained to them. The guys in the timber industry down here are very polite and persuasive and it stopped immediately but it is still unknown how many trees are out there still with metal rods in them. My late uncle showed me on a visit to a local mill in Collie where a four foot circular saw had hit a rod and shattered, one piece fly across the mill and imbedded itself in the wall and another flew through the roof and landed in the yard about 50 yards away. The piece in the wall, about a square foot of it was I believe left there with a cage around it and it was one of the first things new staff were shown. Like your comment Emerald about not being made of sugar stepping out into the rain. Stay safe and all the best to you and all of your family.

Check with your local Fire Department, Ambulance Company/Emergency Medical Service provider or Schools. In most places, one or a combinations of these agencies give First Aid classes. In most cases, theses classes are free.

One of the thing you might want to consider towards safety is wearing safety vest. Were I work we have a standing rule that you will wear a vest or hi -vis garment such as winter coats or T shirts with reflective strips on them. We have 35 workers on the property and 18 construction trucks. Wearing the vest shows the general public coming into the yard indicates who works there. We have a color system. The drivers and laborers wear yellow those that are involved in operations wear orange. I operate the loader and I'm in charge of stock and the yard. But I also also drive truck if needed so I have 2 vest both orange and yellow depending on my job for the day.

Regular Safety training is required at my place of employment. I'm not a first responder at all. But I have run across a few MVA's in my life. While others were excited to help the occupants out of a car, your safety training will kick in. "WHOA! do not move them, the professionals are a few seconds away, lets wait for them". No hero here, but sometimes someone has to calm the excited folks down that only want to help. Repeated Safety training works!!!!!!! The last one was a tractor trailer truck loaded with chips that rolled over. The driver climbed out and we made sure he was coherent and not seriously injured while watching him for issued for head injury or bleeding.

Re first aid kits. Check with your local fire dept or chamber of commerce. First aid/CPR classes are all the time and free. Might never be needed, but nice to have the training. Yearly refreshers also. Check with you underwriters, you may get a discount for having the training.

I once witnessed a terrible accident a motorcycle highway patrolman had. I was behind the cop and the cop was behind a truck hauling fire wood (not one of yours, unless you were in California in the late 80's or early 90's). A piece of firewood fell out of the truck and the cop couldn't avoid hitting it. It launched him may 10 or 15 feet into the air and he came down on one leg, then fell onto his arm. and he was still going 60 MPH. I used the radio on his bike to call for help then went to the cop. He'd broken his leg and his arm and was in pretty bad shape. He was trying to get up so I told him to just lay still and do whatever he tells accident victims to do. Then I had him tell me how to get to his first aid kit, But by the time I got back to the cop help was already arriving. It's amazing how quickly the cops show up if you say "Officer down" on a police radio. After that I got a first aid kit for my car.

Great Video. Well done Nurse Jade! Several things were omitted. Everyone should wear Safety glasses or Shields when around operating equipment. Getting a face full of hot hydraulic oil from a burst hose is not something you will soon forget. Everyone working there should wear Safety Footwear. Long hair is especially dangerous around moving equipment. It should be tied up and/or under a sweater or vest. You should never store Fuels of any kind indoors. Among other things it will invalidate your Insurance. I have only seen 1 Fire Extinguisher on site or equipment. Perhaps I just missed them. Gloves where appropriate will save some skin but that is a personal Choice. No rings, loose clothing or neck chains/bracelets allowed. Hold and Document Monthly Safety Meetings. Dedicate a Safety Officer who keeps written records of weekly/daily checks. All supplied Guards and Shields for equipment must be kept in place. Appropriate signage must be in place and customers must remain outside visible boundaries. It is a long list Sugar! Would wearing Gloves protected your hands? I hope everyone of your employees from Boss down read these comments.

Good video and you didnt melt! Safety first! 😎 Couple things that caught my attention for future videos,... Blade handling and sharpening. Do you sharpen your blades or send them out? Sharpening vid would be cool. If not who do you send your blades to, l would send mine to your people to help in their business. Second, it looks like you have a solar kiln set up. That would also be a great video on construction of building and materials used and its operation/performance. Thanks again for you great content from a fellow Sawyer . Our first resident in our town was a Dutch sawyer 1651 and thats our Schools nickname the Saugerties Sawyers. always, farmer john
