When I cashed in some carbide knives from our planer, the yard had to analyze them to confirm they were carbide. That tool is pretty cool.

Depends on what xou want to mesure. For lighter Elements (Aluminium, Magnesium, Carbon, Silicon...) an XRF gun isnt as precise or cant detect them at all. An Laser Analyzer on the other hand only mesures the surface layer, rust and other contsmination need to be removed.
